Mendoza for SP!
I'm a loyal Royals fan from Frontenac KS, (look us up, we're real) I won't pretend to understand the elaborate stats and charts I always see on here. You guys are way smarter than I am when it comes to crunching numbers, all I know is that I love the Royals to death and I'm really excited about their future. I would like to talk about the starting rotation. I don't have numbers and charts, just a gut feeling. Ranking my hopeful rotation are as follows:
1. Sanchez
2. Luke
3. Chen
4. Paulino
5. Duffy/Mendoza
6. Crow (he only has two pitches and I don't know why they think he can start) More suited for a RP role
I really hope Mendoza gets a chance, he proved himself in AAA last year. He started two games for KC late last year and had a 1.23 ERA in two starts. I know its a small sample size, but with Omaha stats, I don't think its a fluke. He deserves at least a chance in the starting rotation next year. In AAA he posted a 2.18 ERA in 144.1 innings in a hitters friendly league. Its Mendoza's time to shine, I just hope the Royals lock him up for a long time to come.

So you would rather
Mendoza lock up the #5 spot over Duffy? I disagree. I don’t want Matt Cassel at qb, I want upside if that makes any sense. If I’m going to watch a team thats not going to win I want to watch potential, Mendoza doesn’t have that.

I'm going to get in here before the wolves come in ...
Mendoza’s ERA in AAA and KC are flashy. Considering his career history, however, those numbers are unlikely to be sustainable. His peripherals do not match up with stats like ERA. He also strikes out few and walks many – an ugly mixture.
Now, guys outperform their peripherals from time to time. Bruce Chen is a great example. He’s been about a 1/2 a run under his FIP his entire career. It’s just rare, and one would expect him to even out sooner or later.
As mentioned above me, too, he blocks pitchers with more potential. Mendoza is not at an age conducive with a stark improvement. If you’re excited about the future, Duffy and Monty are more promising.
He does have good hair though.

Agreed
His ceiling is as a 4/5 pitcher who inexplicably outperforms his stuff/peripherals. And I think he has about a 5% chance of reaching that potential.
But, considering we’re paying Bruce Chen $10MM, and considering that Mendoza would cost about $1MM for 2 years or 10MM for 5 years, I think he’s worth consideration if he keeps putting up good numbers.

In his MLB career
The average hitter facing Mendoza is raised to the skill level of Chase Utley.
"Trying is the first step to sucking" -Jimmy Chance
mendoza is at best a long relief/spot start guy
and i personally like teaford for that role in 2012. mendoza is at most an AAA insurance for injuries in the rotation.

Mendoza is
never going to be a major league starter in KC. I would rather see Duffy, Crow or Montgomery get that spot before Mendoza. Mendoza would have to have a excellent spring training to get into the rotation.
I think it will be Hochevar, Sanchez, Chen, Paulino, and Duffy. with Crow and Montgomery waiting to get into the rotation. Mendoza will be a emergency starter.

You're not going to see a lot of love for Mendoza around here
The fact is that his strikeout numbers are really low, and that doesn’t bode well for his future success. Mendoza’s success in 2011 also seemed to come out of nowhere and was mostly batting average driven (which is a notoriously fickle stat), so we should be a little cautious about concluding that Mendoza’s 2011 was a new, repeatable performance level.
That’s not to say that it isn’t possible that he’s turned a corner. If Mendoza has made some big adjustments in his pitching approach and has become an extreme groundball pitcher with an ability to paint the corners, then it’s possible that he’ll be able to limit the batting average of his Major League opponents like he did in Omaha last year. But the low strike out approach to MLB pitching is a tough way to get it done, and I think Mendoza’s chances for success are pretty low.
I think it unlikely that Mendoza will pitch well in AAA next year
He has no business making anything but the rare emergency start in the majors.

If anything, he will probably play an Adcock role in the majors next year.
If he sucks, we should probably dump him. And he probably will suck.

Very fitting that Mendoza's numbers look awfully like Horacio Ramirez's career numbers
It is also pretty funny that his 2 games from last September get mentioned but Mendoza’s 4 disastrous games with the Royals in 2010 get blacked out.

I think the real question is where Mendoza should be on the SP depth chart
And it isn’t anywhere near #5. I think my depth chart would look something like this:
Hochevar
Paulino
Sanchez
Duffy
Chen
Montgomery
Teaford
Mazzaro
Mendoza
O’Sullivan
If someone wanted to put Mendoza ahead of Mazzaro, I wouldn’t argue too much.

But some will say he's at least the third best SP on the team
I disagree. And then of course there’s the likelihood that he pitches maybe 150 innings for the Royals this year.

BTW, ZiPS projects 131 ip for Chen
And that isn’t a usage issue. I think that’s based strictly on how many innings he’s been pitching, and probably his age.

I disagree
Yes, the playing time projections for minor leaguers are going to be off. But for regular, full-timers, these systems project the players to be regular, full-timers, based on the playing time they’ve had in recent seasons, and based on their age (perhaps DL time is also specifically taken into consideration). I think 131 ip is a very fair projection for a 35 yo pitcher who has spent a lot of time on the DL, has averaged 89.1 IP over the last four years and 147.2 over the last two years.
I was pretty generous by estimating him at 150 ip when I projected team wins.
You may know me as NYRoyal.
by Scott McKinney on Jan 23, 2012 9:34 AM EST up reply actions
I see it as a negative if Chen pitches more than 131 innings in 2012.
To me, that means that Monty doesn’t step forward this season in Omaha and doesn’t diplace Chen from the rotation. Or the same negative with respect to Duffy.
I hope that Monty pushes Chen to the bullpen in June.
If Monty pitches well in Omaha, he'd likely push someone out of the rotation
But I don’t think it would be Chen. The SP depth chart above, is my own personal depth chart. I don’t think it reflects Dayton Moore’s opinion on those pitchers.
You may know me as NYRoyal.

the guy with the $9 million contract is not getting bumped unless he is terrible
The odds are pretty high that by June one rotation member is either hurt or ineffective.

I’m just a frustrated Royals fan and i’m sick of losing 90 games a year. things have to change and i don’t want to die before they make the playoffs, and i’m only 28, haha
i dont want to see any more shitty pitchers either...
which is why im anti luis mendoza being anything more than our 8th or 9th starting option

if mendoza
gets a shot to start and I’m wrong i’ll meet you at the K and i’ll let you punch me in the gullet. but can we agree that they will win 85 games this year?
atleast the Twins suck
Not many in these here parts think the Royals are going to improve their win total by 14.
I don’t think you actually want to be making that bet. There’s a very real reason that everyone here expects Mendoza to fail. He’s not likely to repeat his fluky success from ‘11, especially given the fact that the rest of his career in both the Majors and minors suggests that this 28-year-old journeyman’s ceiling is that of organizational filler.

Beltran42, I'd like to teach you something about baseball:
Statistics never occur in a vacuum. They have real world causes because the players are human beings. As such, past statistics are very important. Sometimes, past statistics don’t have as much of an impact on future performance due to injury or other causes (Alex Gordon), but they should be considered. This is why many fans are skeptical that Jeff Francoeur can replicate 2011 again.
There are so many things to say based on your previous posts. While you have an interesting point that Mendoza might succeed (he’s obviously doing something right), everything else you are doing is contradicting your statements. You are acting childish, have incorrect or skewed knowledge of players, and are being hypocritical.
Here is a hypocritical example of yours: You had previously argued that Mendoza should be given a look because of his past season in which his ERA was 2.18. As has been established, his previous years have not been good; his ERA in AAA the previous three were 4.10, 4.53, and 5.14. Now, this is ignoring his Major League career ERA of 7.36. However, you dismiss the previous years because, well, you want to. Billybeingbilly offered Meche’s two great seasons in which he posted a 3.67 and 3.98 ERA (while in both pitching over 200 innings) as an example of his value. You, however, dismiss those figures because you want to. You are angry that others are offering other stats of Mendoza than the one you want to use, but you are doing the exact same thing in offering other stats yourself.
There are plenty of places on the internet to be a twat, as my teacher put it the other day. This, though, is a place for intelligent and respectful discussion of baseball, which you have not done. Heated discussions are fine. Heated stupid discussions…well, you can find that anywhere.

England still views themselves as the center of attention or something.
Still in the early stages of grief: denial.
No, this is me screwing up
Barcelona is six hours behind the East Coast of the US, as it forms part of the Central European time zone, and seven hours behind US Central time, which is why I answered wrong before. It’s one hour behind Britain and GMT.
It’s Spain’s fault stuff is all screwed up. The Greenwich Meridian nearly runs through the middle of Barcelona, but the whole country of Spain is lumped in with CET. And a lot of Spain is way to the west of Greenwich, so there are places where the sun doesn’t go down until like 10 PM at night in the summer.
