OT: Las Vegas info
I've only been to Vegas once. It was 12 years ago and for less than 24 hours for business only. The wife is out on Surprise this spring, because we have friends going to Vegas at the time we were thinking about AZ. Any recommendations on which resort? At this time I think it's narrowed down in no particular order to: Paris, Caeser's, Venetian, and Palazzo. Help?

I stayed at Caesar's a few years ago and it was pretty awesome
I don’t think we ever left the complex, except to venture over to the Bellagio’s sportsbook and a “gentlemen’s establishment”. Seemed like we got a pretty good bang for our buck. Oh, and before you ask them…it isn’t REALLY one of Caesar’s palaces.
Wherever you stay, make sure you put your money down on a Royals World Series bet. Hopefully you get better odds than I did.
Just checked odds on Vegas Insider
Royals are 30/1 to win the WS, but that’s much better than CLE (60/1), MIN (80/1) or the White Sox (100/1).
The Royals bets go without saying.

If that's true, I'd happily take the 1:30 action on that
I’d bet $3,000 against the Royals there to win $100.

I've stayed at Caeser's, Paris, and the Venetian...
Ceasar’s is prob my fave of that group. All of the big casino’s are extremely nice, but the newer ones are a little themey. If you are on a tight budget, stay at a dive, it’s really only a place to crash. You spend your time bopping around from casino to casino. If you are a foodie, there are some pretty awesome choices, do a little research. Lots of hotshot chef’s have sold their souls and opened up restaurants in Vegas (just like Steinbeck going to Hollywood back in the day) Hell, the breads and pastries they sling in the shops in the Venetian are delcious. I’d love to hear what the over/under is on wins for the Royals. Have fun.

It has been a few years
Palazzo was still being built last time I was there, but I would rank the other three as Caesar’s and Venetian in the same class with Paris a step below (although any of the three fine depending on price). Caesar’s has a good location (in the center of the strip at the four corners with the Bellagio, Bally’s/Paris, and Flamingo/whatever the Barbary Coast is called now). Caesar’s also has good pool area and a lot of throwback character to it (I first visited there right before the sorely needed renovations, so I might think of it less fondly than others). It is one of the few places that the casino floor is distinctive — most of the new casino floors are pretty interchangeable — and the sports book is nice. Venetian might be a little fancier than Caesar’s. I think the Venetian has larger rooms and is newer, but the casino floor itself is kind of non-descript. The sports book is nice. I did not visit the pool area. Paris is a step down in luxury and the rooms are not real big, but it is still nice and usually a decent value on the hotel rate. Like Caesar’s, the casino floor is distinct (cobblestone streets, etc.) and it has a good location on one of the other four corners. The sports book and the pool are nothing special.
While we're talking about Vegas, I see Groupon often has a Vegas hotel in their offers.
However, when looking at the prices there is often a 10-12% “resort fee” and an additional 9ish% tax. Has anyone used Groupon’s for travel and have they noticed significant savings or do the fees negate a fair amount of it?
Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.
Rock Chalk Talk
I think they charge those taxes and fees to all guests
So comparing Groupon to listed prices should be apples to apples. Just know that the final price will be 20% higher.
I'm partial to the Venetian
But check around for better rates. Depending on the days of the week and time of year, you can do OK even at some nice places on the Strip. About 3 years ago we got the Hard Rock for 69 a night just by watching rates. I like Vegas a lot more than I thought I would and have been a few times, but after 3 or 4 days the magic starts to wear off, especially if you’re losing.
We've found deals including airfare out of Springfield,
from $1000 for 4 nights at Paris to around $1300 for caesers. I assumed it wasn’t worth the extra $300 when the location was the same, but thought it might be worth $100 more to stay at the venetian.

As the laundry and Loose Seal pointed out, 4 nights can be a long time in Vegas (if you are not winning big)
With 4 nights, the odds increase that you might actually spend some quality time at the hotel rather than just sleeping there, so it might be worth spending a little extra on the hotel.
You might look at booking through Allegiant just for your flight, and then finding a hotel from a different website.
Thnks for the suggestions.
I’m looking at seperate bookings tonight!

also, unless you are planning on driving around and seeing more than just the strip
you really do not need to rent a car.
Absolutely not renting a car.
I skip that step whenever I can when travelling.

I HATE riding in cabs...HATE it...
in Vegas everyone knows you come to lose money, so you are likely to have money on you…what stops a cabby from driving you off into the desert?
I couldn’t stand not having a car when I was there, I like to drive around and see things from the street and find my own way.

We're shuttling from the airport to the resort wherever we stay.
After that, doubt we leave the strip at all. The only way I would is if I go play golf, but being there such a short time I doubt I do that.

Not one of your options but the Stratosphere treated me well.
And as everyone else has mentioned, don’t stay too long. A weekend trip for me was random quick poker tourney, poker cash game, Penn and Teller, a comedy club show, sight seeing and such … and even after just a weekend I wasn’t sure if there was much else I’d want to do. The casinos all have their themes and fun little quirks, but when you get down to it you’re just playing slots. Vegas is a blast though.
I think I'm gonna just go that weekend instead of the Sunday thru Thursday at this point.
Even if the bill for the hotel and plane is higher, I’d say the extra night would cost me at least the difference in meals and losses alone.

Just curious
How long is the drive from Vegas to Surprise if I ever wanted to plan a trip to hit both?

I went in '06...
For like $400-500 I got airfare and 4 nights at the MGM Grand…pretty sweet all around facility…close to a lot of things…my downfall was the Fat Tuesdays with the $1 extra 151 or everclear or whatever the hell…pretty nice pool area with a little a flowing stream thru the middle to get drunk and float around in…I had the best damn breakfast I’ve ever had at the restaurant there (can’t remember)…it was corned beef and hash and it will never be that good again
I think they have a tram and rolls to Mandelay and a couple others that connects…
my thoughts are this:
1. it doesn’t really matter what hotel you stay at…I mean sure the MGM had like marble floors and sweet as showers for really cheap, but big whoop
2. the absolute best thing we did was go to the art shop at Caesar’s Palace shops (the shops that have a big aquarium in the middle)…the shop literally has real Picasso’s and Dali’s and was just righteously cool…act like your looking to buy and the staff will give you a little tour with all sorts of cool info
3. remember (at least when I went) that if you wanna go clubbin’ you need dress slacks and a nice shirt…no jeans, no shorts
4. check out Grantland for Bill Barnwell’s columns on Vegas sportsbooks
5. I would make damn sure to check out the area ahead of time to potentially avoid hazards like a topless pool area (if your married and/or practice what Sweeney preaches)
as a side note…not many people have a story like this, but…I married my wife out there (after dating for 2 months) without us telling anyone we were with, or any of our relatives…we planned on having a ceremony on 7/7/07 and when that kind of fell thru and she got pregnant, it was like, uh, well, I’m your son-in-law!…much heavier burden than I had ever thought it would be…worked out for us though…everyone still thinks we are weird for it
I am the one who knocks.
also...RRer KimDeJesus's poker site has some good info on the poker rooms on the Vegas casinos

Thanks for the info!
Great story too…

I didn't much like Vegas
which seems like a hipster snob thing to say, but I just wasn`t impressed. I’d agree you have to see it, if only to see what excess taken to the extreme can produce. One night was enough for me, though; then we were off to Zion NP and the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
(Note: If you ever go out to Arizona stay on the North Rim. Better weather in summer and many fewer tourists. The Park Service has a few cool group hikes every day for free; you walk a couple miles and learn shit.)

I didn't really like Vegas either...
your just a walking atm for the economy…everyone knows it…and they seem to try to get at you…it is void of a lot of things…but if you want to see a drunk land on his face every hour on the hour all day long, then Vegas is your place

Sports gaming is about to go nationwide in this country
And Vegas is going to seem quaint in a generation.

Yeah, I'm surprised more states haven't legalized casino gambling
just so they could tax it. Then again, as a libertarian, I wonder why they haven’t legalized prostitution and pot smoking too. They could tax those as well. Goodbye, national debt.
Vegas is going to wind up like Atlantic City.

Apparently many Americans still have a distaste for large scale, organized gambling
Lotteries, of course, are of a larger scale and are just as organized, but they don’t have the scary feel of poker, blackjack, etc. And of course, you don’t lose your mortgage payment or your life savings playing the lottery, but you can while playing blackjack, etc. It scares some people. For some it has a nefarious, underworld feel to it.
And then of course there’s the fear of casinos becoming involved with the real underworld of organized crime.
I disagree with all of the above and I have a distaste for whole concept of consensual crime, but I don’t think Americans are particularly close to nationwide legal gambling. But there will continue to be incremental changes.

It'll continue, state by state
Even Missouri has casino gambling. Soon Kansas will realize that it’s losing tax money across the state line.
My understanding is that the Mob has been pretty much run out of casino gambling by big corporations.
"That fucking fucker of a general swears too fucking much." --Unnamed soldier about Gen. George Patton, 1943
Missouri did pass a law that said that they cannot add anymore casinos though.
Then they turn around and bitch and moan about revenues being in the toilet. It’s ridiculous. The fact that they haven’t floated a riverboat on Table Rock or Taneycomo in the Branson area is beyond idiotic. The tax revenue and jobs created would completely revitalize a depressed area.
