Nine year deal?

If that is true, what in the world? I thought Fielder didn’t want to DH.

I'm guessing they will rotate Cabrera and Fielder at DH and 1B

At least to some degree. That is quite a duo in the middle of Detroit’s lineup.

some more vmart at catcher? some cabrera 3b time?

id imagine trading vmart would be ideal but his value wont be too high if he hasnt played after the injury

Rotating those two this year will give them some time to rest. Seems like a good idea as neither one is considered great defensively at 1B.

Best for both sides

If it’s guaranteed, it’s about right if you don’t think Prince should have given up some money (which I do), but honestly, why not go for it for a few years and maybe eat it a bit down the road? It isn’t much different than how A-Rod’s contract is playing out, although obviously the TIgers have a lot less money than the Yankees.

It’s insane, but it’s not a “stupid” as people are making it out to be.

the yankees smartly frontloaded the contract though....

so even if arod is an slightly above average DH the last few years, its not a killer b/c he’ll only be making like 16 or 18 million

by billybeingbilly on Jan 24, 2012 3:44 PM EST up reply actions

it makes the burden on them less at the end...by a significant amount...

the PV of the contract is higher, but when arod isnt all that valuable, he will be paid relatively appropriately…which makes a ton of sense

sorry, kinda frazzled

I just mean that this was around what you’d expect (maybe a little more) given a certain average increase in price of a marginal win and player decline, etc., and for that kind of security, seems like the Tigers should have gotten a bit of a “discount” over the “average” rate.

Again, this is all speculative estimates over the life of the contract. Obviously, a heck of a job by Boras, almost no matter how it’s structured.

Could be good in the last part of the contract if Fielder gets real fat…which is a significant possibility.

The price of winning the AL Central in the near future just went up

I’ve never liked the assumption that winning the AL Central is pretty easy because the teams often suck. Almost every year, some team hits 89+. Now, we can expect the Detroit Tigers to win 90+ (I haven’t crunched the new projection yet). The Royals are going to have to become genuinely good in order to make the playoffs. The odds against backing into the playoffs by winning something like 86 games are quite long…in any division in any season.

at -0.5 WAR/year he needs 35.5 WAR for contract to break even or almost 4 WAR/year.

That's a lot of money to spend on a 2.5 WAR gain over Victor Martinez

We’re basically talking a player with very limited defensive value… and 9 years! Still, it’s good for them in the short-term. Unless that is, they move Cabrera and to 3b where he can post a -100 UZR/150.

With Inge throwing shit like .197 .265 .283 on the scoreboard, Cabrera can be really bad in the field and be a much better 3B overall. Ordonez has jumped the shark as a COF, and at 38 he is an unlikely comeback candidate. Boesch to RF and Cabrera or Martinez in LF maybe? This would be in 2013.

From Oliver, I get Fielder as about a +55 hitter

at DH, and without the bonus (i.e., a DH only uses league average as his replacement level), that puts him at almost six wins.

by Matt Klaassen on Jan 24, 2012 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

Just to complicate things

There’s also the issue of what effect moving to DH would have on his hitting. As you know, some players hit much worse as DH. Some hit a little better. And then of course we also don’t know how much he’ll DH. I’m guessing something like 50/50 1B/DH split with Cabrera.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

by Scott McKinney on Jan 24, 2012 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

That's why I didn't give him the "bonus"

that ~5.5 is based on a -2.25 win positional adjustment since he’s never DHed before. A “standard” effect might be about half a win a season, which would put his positional adjustment at -1.75 wins (the usual post-hoc -1.75 wins for DH).

And Cabrera might move back to third base. Might. Which—is quite bad defensively I would think.

interesting note worth mentioning here

Fielder played in a very offensive-friendly park in Milwaukee, specifically for homers. Detroit is one of the tougher places to hit home runs (anyone think he’ll crack three triples this year? haha). How this plays out, we don’t know, and I don’t wanna look at homer charts to estimate, but I’d guess (having seen a ton of Prince’s highlights) that most of his homers would leave almost every park. Just food for thought.

Times change

http://www.mlive.com/tigers/index.ssf/2012/01/detroit_tigers_gm_dave_dombrow.html

After the season-ending injury to Victor Martinez, speculation has turned to whether the Tigers would sign free-agent first baseman Prince Fielder to fill the void.

Martinez hit .330 and drove in 103 runs for the Tigers last year. The designated hitter tore his ACL during off-season workouts.

“Of course we’d consider Prince Fielder,” Detroit Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowksi said Thursday afternoon at a stop on the team’s Winter Caravan.

“But realistically, it’s probably not a good fit,” he said.

Agreed,

I was just thinking that maybe they start the process of trying to get younger again now that Braun is suspended, and Prince s gone for good. Could just be stupid thinking on my part, but I don’t see any way those two pitchers are on that roster after July unless they’re winning the division.

I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

by mitchfreakingmaier! on Jan 24, 2012 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

They've got Marcum and Greinke for one more year

I think they are still going to go for it. If things turn south and they are out of it in July, then they would probably trade some rentals.

Brewers just signed Aramis Ramirez to a multi-year deal

replaced Betancourt with a SS who can actually field (Alex Gonzalez), and brought back F-Rod. They are definitely going for it this year.

by Gopherballs on Jan 24, 2012 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Pujols's deal could end up being over $260MM if he reaches 3,000 hits and breaks Bonds's HR record.

He gets over $10MM via a personal services agreement that isn’t included in the totaled annual salary of $240MM.

BTW, when it comes to this

“Sounds like #Tigers will have a rotation going at corner infield spots, including Cabrera playing 3rd base on some days.”

who’s the 3rd wheel in this rotation anyways? who do the Tigers have to play at DH that is better than playing Cabrera at 3rd?

Outside of National League Parks, Cabrera shouldn’t be at 3rd base for the Tigers.

There's a lot of moving parts.

Kelly/Inge/Raburn/Young can all play left and Kelly and Inge can play third when they want to let Miggy or Prince DH.

by BHWick on Jan 24, 2012 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

I think ideally they'd like to avoid Inge and Kelly.

Miguel at 3rd, Raburn in LF, and Delmon at DH is the best option for the lineup. We’ll have to see how well Miguel can handle 3rd in spring training to know if they can do that. Personally, I think he’ll be adequate enough.

by rcpratt on Jan 24, 2012 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry, I don't know what year it is.

I assume Delmon will get probably half the ABs at DH this year.

by rcpratt on Jan 24, 2012 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

Has management actually been talking about this?

Even in the wake of the loss of Martinez? I really think Delmon Young is going to be the almost everyday LFer.

You may know me as NYRoyal.

by Scott McKinney on Jan 24, 2012 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

Not publicly...

I’m just speculating. Delmon is not a good fielder and while I expect he will play 25% or so there, I really think Raburn LF and Delmon DH is the better everyday lineup.

by rcpratt on Jan 24, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

Trade or non/tender Delmon?

Raburn will have trade value too.

2014 is Miguel's last year, JV is through 2013.

I think it’s fairly possible that JV extends or resigns though, hopefully…much more likely than Cabrera now.

by rcpratt on Jan 24, 2012 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

Youd have to figure that with his weight

And the obvious yearly decline of “larger” 1B/DH guys, unless he continually puts up ungodly numbers, in the same fashion he partially is now, his value is going to go down. Not significantly of course but at least by 2014/2015 pending any extensions he’d be worth a few million less. Certainly not the 20+ he makes now. So the Tigers have that going for him.

And also who knows with injuries and performance. But it Miguel/Verlander/Fielder keep putting up their current numbers it would seem the Tigers would have to become the Red Sox/Yankees to make them lifetime players unless they continue to sell their middle level guys off.

by KCTiger on Jan 24, 2012 6:42 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

The question isn't will they have them

Its will they have any other players when they are paying those three guys 70+ million to stick around.

I'd like to point out that, while this is not good for the Royals,

it isn’t a horrendously bad thing. Here’s why:

1) Contracts. $24 mil/year is a huge amount of money, then they have to pay Cabrera and Verlander big money as well.
2) Increased Probability of decline. Fielder’s body type doesn’t do well in the long run.
3) Extreme defensive liability. Fielder’s bad at 1B, Cabrera’s bad at 3B, and VMart is bad (I think at this point) at catcher.

It would have been worse if the Tigers had signed Pujols, who is actually good at 1B.
