Hypothetical Thursday 2
I'm gonna make this a thing, guys. Anyway, here's the situation: after a 2011 Pirates-esque hot start, the Royals sit at 48-42, trailing Detroit by a game. Pitching is still an issue, but Wil Myers has been tearing AA to shreds. Should the Royals trade Myers and others for David Price, who is available?

What are Duffy/Monty/Oddo/Other pitching prospects doing at the time?
I think Dayton is extremely reluctant to trade Wil. Not to mention if he is in AA in July he probably isn’t killing it.

From what I read, Myers should be in AAA to start the season.
If he is tearing the cover off the ball, you bring him up. You don’t trade him. You also have to see how Monty, Duffy, Dwyer, Odorizzi, Arguelles, Crow are doing. Arguelles timetable is probably going to get sped up soon, since he is on an MLB contract. How do his options work? This will be his 3rd season of a 5 year contract, correct?

Arguelles will qualify for the exception that allows four option years
The team can keep freely sending him to the minors through the end of the 2013 season.

If we can get David Price, then maybe.
We’d get an ace with a couple of years of team control for an A prospect (Myers) and probably a B prospect or two. It depends on if this happens or not, but if he is available, I would pull the trigger.

2012 is the year we shine.
Nope
Stay the course. Don’t Mortgage the future for instant gratification. I want multiple championships not a fluke appearance in the post season. I want the fear of God struck in fan bases of other teams and other fans when they see the next series is vs the Powder Blue Bombers of KC.

Well, maybe if we traded a top pitching prospect.
And one of the bullpen guys (Soria/Broxton/Holland).

It would have to be a pretty sweet deal
Because when we start winning and winning ALOT i.e. WS Championships, we won’t be getting the great draft picks like Hos,Crow, Bubba… So our core players and those in the farm have to be strong. IMHO

Even if you don't, you get three and a half years of David Price (correct me if I'm wrong)
Yes please.
Yea, I make that in a heartbeat.

Looks like you're right
Bbref says his FA year is 2016. Allegedly the Rays wanted Myers, Soria and Colon for Shields. Since Price is younger and has an extra year of team control, aren’t they going to want even more for him?
Yes
Can’t imagine they’d be interested in shopping him at all.

You would have to also keep in mind that the Rays might not want to trade him at the deadline.
They look like they are going to be in contention, so I don’t know if I’d risk it or not.

They certainly wouldn't trade him, but don't fight the hypothetical

So is an apparently ready-to-produce in the majors Myers for 6.5 years worth Price for 3.5 years?
And, of course those would be Price’s 3.5 most expensive years. He’s getting $4.35M in 2012 which is his Arb1 year. That will be followed by three increasingly expensive arb years.
Myers MLB production would still be an unknown, so there’s risk there. Price wouldn’t be cheap. The years and dollars count. And of course there’s always injury risk for both, but more for a pitcher.

As others have mentioned, it really depends on how the Royals top pitching prospects are performing
If most, or all, of them are crapping the bed in the minors, and the MLB team otherwise looks like it’s performing well (i.e. no major dropoffs and some significant improvements in the lineup), then I’d be in favor of the trade.
Yes
but for the 3.5 remaining years, not the one game deficit with Detroit.
Nope, stay the course
Let the young guys develop and keep the farm system intact to reload in the next few years.
Only way I make that trade is if there is a glaring hole in the starting rotation, and if all our pitching prospects (Monty, Duffy, Odorizzi, Crow, Arguelles, Dwyer) are struggling.
