OT: 7th Generation Gaming Consoles
So, I'm late to the game. I'm nearly 33 years old, and my primary gaming system in the household is the PlayStation 2 I bought in 2001 as I was graduating from college. I finally purchased my first HDTV this past November. Until then, my 35" Sharp CRT, which I also bought in 2001, was my flagship TV (and is still serving admirably in the home).
In short, I've found that I don't have enough low-def inputs to the new TV to hook up the PS2, which is finally signalling the end of the road. Not to mention that NCAA Football '12 was not released for the PS2...also a deal-breaker.
I am not a huge gamer. I like playing football especially, and also enjoy the random night playing RPGs with my wife (still working on finishing Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II). We do not own any Blu-Ray players, and I am not really inclined to game online. I just want to be able to play some football to blow off some steam and enjoy my HDTV on occasion.
Being a Sony guy (I also have a PSP, and have never owned anything other than PlayStations except for my original NES), I am inclined to go with a PS3. If anyone has any thoughts, please share. And for the hell of it, why not a poll?

This is how I'm feeling about it, but wanting to do my due diligence
This is going to have to last another 11 years.
If you're wanting it to last 11 years
you might be better off waiting a year for the next generation.

In all honesty
With a 2 year old and another son on the way, I’m sure we’ll be upgrading to 8th gen in about 5 years. I have a hard time paying the sticker price when these things first come out, so the next generation won’t even be an option I’ll consider until then.
PS3
If you happen to get a 3D TV it’s the best Bluray player out there. It’s 3D capable already, and for sports games I think it’s the best game play anyway. I’ve had one for 2 years and can’t believe that it took me that long to get.
I'm waiting for my wave of talent to arrive.

Yes, the BluRay alone is worth the upgrade, in the sense that
you (Tito42) are going to need a BluRay player sooner or later. The PS3’s isn’t fancy or anything, but it doesn’t sound like you want/need a fancy one anyway.

Fanpost + Poll on RoyalsReview = Due Diligence
I like this thinking…in fact, maybe we should start a consulting branch.
Gotta go with the PS3
Especially with the free PSN.
Online gaming is nice, but if you don’t do it a lot its really hard to justify $15 a month.
"We don’t have guys with a long history of being effective in the seventh and eighth innings."
~Trey Hillman, master of understatements.
XBox Live is $60 a year
Monthly it is $5, or something very near to it.
We should trade for Vance Worley.
It's "sticker" price is $60/year
but I don’t anyone who’s paid that. Last time I re-upped I effectively paid $35/year.

I have all three plus about 20 more systems.
I’m a bit of a video game historian, actually. Both of the two current gens hardcore consoles are worth the ,money, but it really depends on a couple of factors as to which you should purchase.
1. Will you play online? The Xbox is objectively much, much better at fulfilling this function.
1b. Do you have any friends you want to play with online and what do they play on? This might be the most important question if your answer to the first part is yes. While Xbox is superior for online, I choose my main online platform to play with friends who live far away. If they had chosen PS3, I would have too. They didn’t.
2. Do you want to watch movies? PS3 is a blu-ray player, has less fan noise, has a more reliable disc drive, and (imo) has a better Netflix app.
3. Do you care about game exclusives? Both have high quality exclusive titles. I prefer PS3s selection for retail discs and Xboxs selection for downloadable games. There truthfully isn’t a right answer here as both have exclusive games that are can’t miss.
4. Do you like sports games? This is pretty much a wash unless you like baseball games or racing games. For everything else, they are equal, but PS3 wins the baseball department with little competiton. Xbox has a narrow edge in racing.
5. You mentioned RPGs and Xbox ha the lead there, however, that is mostly due to a few older titles. Current releases tend to come out on both, though, PS3 may tend to have a buggier experience (Skyrim, for instance).

OT: Have you heard or read about EA getting back in the MLB market in 2013?
2kSports exclusive contract is supposed to be up after this upcoming season.
We should trade for Vance Worley.
I've heard the speculation.
I imagine that someone is going to buy the exclusive again whether it is 2k or ea. Either way, I expect that first party baseball games won’t be affected and it will be difficult to surpass Mlb the Show.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
The Show is far superior to the 2K games.

For me, The Show is almost reason enough itself to get a PS3

Thank you
This is a good breakdown, I’m starting to get a consistent feel of the pros and cons of each console.
1. Probably not very often.
1b. My best friend is trying to persuade me to get a 360 because he wants me to play Black Ops online with him. He has always been huge into shooters, and loves the online play. I’ve gone over to his house and tried it out. I mean, it’s neat, but just not my cup of tea. I’d rather play sports games in franchise mode.
2. We don’t watch a ton of movies, and I’m happy with my ‘upconverted’ DVD player. I just re-upped my Amazon Prime membership (get a great deal on diapers through Amazon Mom), and I now have access to the entire original Star Trek series, which has been remastered in HD. It appears the 360 will play Amazon streaming video, but the PS3 currently doesn’t.
3. No. If I can download roster updates to sports games on either one, then I’m fine really.
4. Yes. Primarily football and baseball, though I haven’t bought a baseball game in a while. I do like racing but am preferential toward Gran Turismo, another reason for me to go PS3.
5. We have some old PS2 RPGs that we’d like to finish off, and I understand the new PS3’s aren’t backward compatible with PS2 games, though the first ones that came out were. This is dissappointing.
Most games
do it within the software when you try to join an online game, though MLB the Show has a large community where (within the game) you can select roster downloads that were pinup by fans. This is awesome, because no current game pays for milb roster information
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I bought one of the last PS3s
that did PS2 emulation via hardware rather than software. It is pretty sweet. You might be able to find a used ps3
IMO, Forza > Gran Turismo, but its pretty close.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
Oh, wow.
I forgot my point for the last comment. Given what you told me, I wouldn’t recommend either over the other for you. Both of them seem like they’d do what you want them for pretty well
The distinguishing features on the consoles don’t sound like things that you’d take advantage of…
"I DARE you to make less sense."
My big thing
Is that I’ve used a Playstation controller for over 15 years, and nothing else. I’m just comfortable with PlayStations.
I was the same way until this generation.
The PlayStation controller has a better d-pad, but the Xbox controller has better ergonomics. It took me awhile to get used to it though, and if I play a game (like metal gear) that I used to play on PSx on Xbox, I suck at it for a while.
"I DARE you to make less sense."
I agree that it seems like a big deal
(and one of the reasons I’m happy I went from PS2 to PS3), but you can make the switch to 360 controller easier than you think. I bet that after about a week of playing you don’t even notice anymore. Just don’t make the decision with the controller as one of the main factors is all.

Do you have any comment or information on the compatibility of the next generation of gaming consoles?
The drive tray just died on my 360 and I know I can’t wait for the 720 to come out, but I’ve been awfully curious how they’ll integrate it into XBL…
My main question is whether or not I can play the same games with friends who have upgraded (like say for instance, Borderlands 2), or if Microsoft and Sony are even giving that notion any amount of consideration…?
Nick Swisher is hands^h^h^h^h^h delicious.
Do you have an Xbox 360 regular or slim?
Replacing the drive is not a difficult repair, however, the regular Xbox (the bulky one) has a lock code between motherboard and optical drive making it near impossible to use a replacement drive. Although I am not positive, I believe the slim did away with that “feature.”
"I DARE you to make less sense."
it's one of he original "bulky" types.
Just opening the case was a bitch and a half. I figure between the two games included, the 250GB HD and of course, new warrantied box, I’m fine with $300 spent on it. But, I would like to know that I can play 360 games against my friends on Live with it if they are playing on the next generation box.
Nick Swisher is hands^h^h^h^h^h delicious.
Toughy. Some questions:
1) Do you have cable?
2) Do you have Netflix?
-—-part 2 of Q2) Do you have Netflix Instant Watch?
3) Do you rent movies (Blu-Ray or Not)?
4) Do you have children?
If so, then I would go with the XBox. The Blu-Ray player on the PS3 was a big deal when a standalone BR player was running you $300-$450. Now that you can get one for about $60, it really doesn’t matter.
Online gaming or no, XBox Live comes with a tremendous amount of TV and Movie options that are hard to pass up.
We should trade for Vance Worley.
1. Yes
2. No
3. Occasionally
4. Yes, but this is going to be for adult use. Not going to promote video gaming for quite a while, except for educational systems like the Leapfrog.
there is a pantheon of early childhood and education games for the XBox
Available in stores and in the online marketplace.
We should trade for Vance Worley.
I'm not a big gamer either
Just a few sports games. I went with PS3 because it doubles as our blu-ray player. I can also watch Netflix online, although its performance is erratic at times. I don’t know much about Xbox.
I do miss Mario Kart.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Played a lot of Mario Kart 64 back in the day
Very fun game, especially when you have 4 people playing.
It is a PS3 for me
I have both, but i prefer the PS3. Each has it’s advantages. Living out of the normal viewing area for the Royals facilitated the purchase of a PS3. You can get MLB.TV (in HD) on PS3 for at least $50 less than you get it through Directtv or any other cable provider,. You cannot get MLB.TV on Xbox at this time.
There is quite a bit of crossover features for each system, (i.e. Netflix), but I find the graphics a little better with the PS3, plus the blue-ray capability are nice.
Having said that, the technology associated with the Kinect for Xbox, is truely amazing. That is the future of home interactive entertainment!!
MLB.TV is coming to the XBOX...
I actually thought it was already up

they had a link to the "app"
but it’s not there anymore. It’s coming though.
Nick Swisher is hands^h^h^h^h^h delicious.
The Bluray player alone makes it far superior.
You can use it to stream Hulu, Hulu plus, Netflix, and VUDU also. Full disclosure, we are probably going to get a 360 for the kids to play Kinect games, but I seriously don’t ever see myself playing it other than the Kinect stuff. My kids stick to the Wii, and hardly play any of the ps3 stuff too. It’s my own little empire in the basement. Road to the Show is a great baseball feature too. I’m a 20 year old right fielder with some pop and I just got promoted to Omaha last night. Like our current right fielder, I have zero plate discipline. Ncaa football 12 is fantastic too. Just know that the new one is coming in July/August so it’ll be cheap soon. Ive also heard that the FIFA games are great. Haven’t gotten one yet though.

The problem with Blu-ray...
is that it is an inferior drive for game streaming. Its really slow, which is why you’ll never find one in a high end gaming PC or laptop. The PS3 accounts for this with mandatory partial install. Xbox has all of those streaming options and all of those games (minus the show).
The ps3 is a better engineered device and allows for HDD swapping without a stupid shell which is awesome.

I wish there were more good PC sports games
I’m really only interested in sports video games and I’m not really interested in shelling out the money for a game system. I just want to play the best baseball and football games on my PC.
You may know me as NYRoyal.
Unfortunately, EA has supposedly stopped supporting PC with their sports games due to piracy. I built a pretty badass gaming rig a few years ago and never used it for anything other than video streaming and running R, minitab, and SPSS.
Yup, piracy doesn’t hurt anyone.

Do you like sim games?
OOTP and Diamond Mind are pretty fun so long as you don’t need pretty pics of players hitting home runs.

I've considered that
A couple years ago I downloaded a demo version of OOTP. I liked it but it was so involved that I didn’t know if I would have time for it. And I really don’t want to bother with setting assignments for individual scouts or hiring all of the scouts and coaches. But perhaps there are settings where I can put all of that on auto.

The night I got it
I was up til like 4 am simming through 15 years of Royals baseball. Guys like Phil Hiatt and Jose DeJesus became legends.
That was before I had kids. It is pretty time consuming. Also, some of the transactions can be pretty screwy – I usually have to place rules on myself to keep from taking advantage of the computer.
Now I pretty much stick to Diamond Mind which is just a sim game without the front office stuff.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com
Yeah, it’s the front office stuff that interests me. If I can’t actually pitch, hit and throw in the game, then I want all (or almost all) of the real world baseball side of running an MLB organization. When the OOTP for 2012 comes out (if it isn’t already out), I might get it. Although maybe I should get last year’s when the Royals prospects might have looked better.

I am surprised you don't play OOTP. It seems right up your alley.
It is very intimidating at first, but it is extremely customizable and is simply awesome. Check out the forums at the OOTP website and you will find that everyone seems to play a different way. I play a fictional league with no ratings (stats and scouting reports only) and I’ve never been as invested with a video game as I am now.
Easily..EASILY worth the money, I feel.

Also, yes you can put a lot of that stuff you mentioned on auto.
In fact, you can just be a GM and have the AI run your your major league and minor league teams completely, or you can manage every detail. I manage every detail and once you get used to it, it’s not as time-consuming as it sounds.

Hey Retro, are you in the GOT going on right now?
I wonder if we’ve crossed paths before? How many WS titles have you snagged? I’ve been playing pretty consistently for the last 2 years, I’m a couple of percentage points over .500, but have by no means got a handle on things. I’ve got 4 WS titles, out of 17 appearances. Still not real sure when I’ve put together a contender or a stinker. Had a string of decent teams using Coor’s field and cheap GB pitchers, but have flipped back to a 2b’s hitting, good pitch, good defense model in Royals Stadium.

I'd encourage you to jump in again. The time commitment isn't bad.
Heavy on the front end, but once you have your team, you more or less sit back and watch the results roll in. If you get in a standard league, let me know.
by Nighthawk at the Diner on Jan 30, 2012 1:00 PM EST up reply actions
Diamond Mine is a lot of fun. Sim game, with historical appeal. It has deepened my love and knowledge of the game.
Imaginesports.com. I highly recommend it. You get 100 mil to build a 28 man roster. One of my better teams was a stars and scrubs bunch featuring Brett and Ted Williams. I think each team you buy costs 20 bucks, so its not cheap. The sim cranks out a 162 game season over 3 months, your team plays a 3 game series each day, with the results showing up on-line around 11am, 5pm, and 2 am. Each “league” is comprised of 12 teams in 3 four team divisions. The division champs and the team with the next best record advance to post season. Your team earns money each week, which allows you to borrow up front (with an interest penalty), or save up and drop some bucks on a missing piece later in the season. Wonderful game. If there were enough people interested, it would be fun to set up a RR league on there.

I might be interested.
I ended up getting OOTP over the weekend, game is addicting. I decided to try to fix the Orioles.
I've dabbled with OOTP, but never really committed, I should check it out.
You should def check out imaginesports.com. The historical angle is what I like. You’ve got your pick of most ballplayersn(including Negro League stars, and some Japanese stars) from the late 1800s up through today (although very few current day players, not sure why that is, maybe a licensing thing?). Anyway, you can build a team around Ty Cobb, Greg Luzinski, and Jackie Robinson, with Walter Johnson anchoring your pitching staff. It’s fun to tinker with rosters, and try to match players to your home park….you get to pick your home park as well, from a bandbox like the Baker Bowl, to old vintage 1976 Royals stadium.

I just got OOTP 12 last night
I dove in on the Royals. Things are going to get crazy! I wish all of the “game options” were available for the “create a 2011 MLB game”.
You may know me as NYRoyal.
by Scott McKinney on Jan 31, 2012 10:20 AM EST up reply actions
I was going to go with the Royals, but I went with the O's for some reason.
I tried the Royals in the demo, traded everything. The only thing I’m noticing about the game is that prospects lose their potential stars very quickly, but not many gain potential stars. I guess that is realistic, but I wish it didn’t happen. I’m bringing Prince Fielder to Baltimore this offseason, I don’t care what Angelos thinks.
I’m in commissioner mode and pumped up some Royals players and knocked some of them down. I don’t want to determine how good every Royals player will be, but I am trying to make it roughly accurate with regard to how good those players looked in 2011 and what their true talent level is going forward.
You may know me as NYRoyal.
by Scott McKinney on Jan 31, 2012 5:03 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah the game is so realistic that a lot of people have to adjust to it
Nothing worse than trading for a prospect and then watching him suck balls. I play in a fictional league and with no ratings (stats and scouting reports only), so the drops in ratings aren’t as obvious sometimes….but that’s how it goes in the real world. It’s unlike other video games where your awesome prospects and players all pan out.

If you are a "gamer" go with the 360...
I have zero desire for a blu ray player so I went with the 360 mainly because I like the controller better, doesn’t help that I’ve been on a personal Sony Jihad for about 8 or 9 years now too.
But if you are a casual gamer who will use the blu ray player Its probably the safer bet.

Then the SNES.
Then I will tell him that videogames and computers have been outlawed.
At the age of 18 he will likely bolt from my house as he will somehow have gotten a whiff of bigger and better things that exist outside of the basement-world
