Burrell was the #1 overall pick in 1998
The A’s took Mark Mulder #2
Then the Cubs took Corey Patterson #3
The Royals had pick #4 on the board. OF JD Drew was out there, having spurned the Phils the previous draft, and with adviser Scott Boras, was asking for a huge bonus. Jeff Weaver, CC Sabathia, Brad Lidge, Carlos Pena, Felipe Lopez, Austin Kearns were all out there to be taken.
The Royals took a pitcher out of Stanford named Jeff Austin because he was a polished “close-to-MLB-ready” pitcher and they badly need pitching. Austin won exactly two games in the Majors.

I will always fondly remember
the reasonable discussions from late summer to autumn 2008 regarding the merits of the Royals signing Pat Burrell to a $60 million contract (or Adam Dunn to a $100 million contract).
Good times.
eek...yeah....
i was very anti signing burrell…not sure i was on board with giving dunn $100 million but i liked him alot…feel like i was thinking something along the lines of 5/70 or so
