Nationals are aggressively shopping John Lannan and his $5M contract to create space to pursue Edwin Jackson....
Do you want John Lannan?

he is a lefty with a 'meh' K/9 rate and a somewhat worrisome BB/9 rate.
so it seems like he would be a no brainer for DMs 2012 rotation.
Do you really think Dayton Moore wants the guy
who sang “Imagine there’s no heaven?”
In all seriousness, I like Lannan as maybe a third starter, but certainly not with that sort of a contract.

He's got a legitimate shot at being the pitching unicorn: the 1 WAR pitcher
sold
(Where did the “no such thing as a 1 WAR pitcher” come from, anyways?)
Kila's slash for Apr 20 to May 4, 2011, right before he was sent down: .276 / .344 / .448

(btw, I'm sorta stealing a joke from fangraphs - just want to offer credit to JT)
Nick Swisher is hands^h^h^h^h^h delicious.
Pass
Lannan has a nice groundball rate that somewhat makes up for walking too many, but not really an upgrade on the existing group.
I think Lannan is worth $5M for a year.
I understand that his K-rate is not attractive, but he has been effective for four straight years now.
2008 – 182 innings, 3.91 ERA
2009 – 206 innings, 3.88 ERA
2010 – 143 innings, 4.65 ERA
2011 – 184 innings, 3.65 ERA
Admittedly ERA can be deceptive, but when a guy goes out four years in a row and gives innings and does not give up too many runs, at some point you need to put aside whatever idea you might have of what a good pitcher’s stat line should look like and recognize that he is getting the essential part of his job done. Six innings a start, and most night two or three runs surrendered.
Just my two cents. I think he would make the Royals better next year, and after three straight years of enormous profit-taking God knows Glass can afford to pay a better than average starting pitcher something close to market rate on a one year contract. As long as the Nationals are not asking for better than a low B prospect I would be happy to see Moore swing a deal for Lannan.

I remember the $70M roster, and the team still pulled a profit that year. Which seems to mean that David Glass has reaped about a $50-60M profit off the team over the last two years. Somewhere in that ballpark. Being able to afford Lannan’s salary should in no way be an issue here. If the team is not flush with cash that is only because Glass has stuck it all in his bank account.
As to who Lannan should replace, well obviously every pitcher who he outperforms. He very well could be the best pitcher in the 2012 KC rotation. I would be rather surprised if he is not performing at least as well as five other starters throughout the course of next season. KC, like all teams, has to find at least seven pitchers who are viable options in the rotation. You have to go all the way back to 2008 to find a KC team that did not have at least seven pitcher started nine or more games.

His career DIPS marks are as follows
FIP – 4.61
xFIP – 4.45
tERA – 5.00
SIERA – 4.69
That’s all in the National League. Who is he going to outperform in the Royals current rotation? He is Vin Mazzaro.
