frank thomas 2006…prorated to 110 games…this type of move is precisely why billy beane is considered a genius. a minor league contract for a non guaranteed 500k…if he’s awesome, they trade him. if he sucks, they cut him. if he’s bad in the clubhouse, they cut him. as bad of a rap as manny gets, he’s allegedly very good with helping young teammates. so, in theory, also in that worse case scenario is you paying him to teach cespedes how to work hard and hit

i agree here. he was signed for 1 reason: help Cepedes adjust to the USA and MLB.
i think his baseball skills were a secondary consideration here.
