Thoughts? I have a ROKU box (a older one) already, and I'll be getting the MLB.tv internet package again, so this won't affect a major purchasing decision. Mostly curious about streaming quality, ability to watch games after they've happened, etc.

if you live within 1000 miles of KC and want to watch the Royals via mlb.tv....FahgetAboutIt!!!

the Foxsports mafia does not allow people who live in the center of the country to be Royals fans unless they pay them a ‘kickback’, which is gladly collected under the name ‘premuim subscription fee’ by their local cable company lackies.

Not Fox Sports is it?

MLB’s your huckleberry.

Glad I came, just wish I hadn't stayed so long.

Absolutely

I’m sure if it were entirely up to Fox Sports, they would be more than happy to offer their regional networks (and therefore coverage of MLB games) in as many cable markets as possible. If MLB doesn’t black them out, though, then they wouldn’t be able to sell as many MLB.tv or Extra Innings packages. Of course, the most ridiculous and maddening thing is using the old “territory” map to keep certain fans from doing either one. And that’s all MLB’s fault.

i thought it had to do with the broadcast deal MLB has with FoxSports

basically Foxsports has sole broadcast rights for the games. they can decide who, how, and where the games are broadcast. so they extend those rights for each mlb teams to their regional networks

I dont think Foxsports makes any money off of mlb.tv subscriptions, so they want as many mlb.tv as possible to be blacked out, forcing fans to cable subscriptions to get Foxsports channels. the problem is i am a full state and over 400 miles away from KC, so my local cable provider does not carry FoxSports KC with its normal subscription. to get FOxSports KC, i have to sign up for an extended sports channel package, which is $50/month more, which is out of my budget.

MLB advertises its streaming service for “out of market” games, but i am 400 miles out of the KC market and i am still blacked out by the draconian FoxSports braodcast deal. Pha Q FoxSports.

all they are accomplishing is driving fans away from the game of baseball and decreasing the amount of money MLB makes every year.

That's the MLB policy though.

All fans deal with it whether the team is affiliated with Fox or not.

I'm in California

so that’s not a problem (thankfully). Been doing the MLB.tv for a few years now, with mostly positive results. Never tried – or even realized I had the option of accessing through – ROKU until the other day, which is why I’m curious.

Roku is OK

for mlb.tv. I have an older Roku HD Player, and the quality is good. No complaints.

Works with live games for which a blackout isn’t in effect, and you can navigate to past dates to watch archived games.

Sweet

Thats all I’m asking for from it, so that sounds good. Will be quite an improvement from the laptop!

It should be noted

for those considering a purchase that all this is also true of the AppleTV.

I know you said you already have a Roku, so of course you’re not considering buying anything new. But for someone who might be, MLB.tv should not be the deciding factor between the two boxes. Netflix shouldn’t be either, as it’s also on both. Amazon Prime Instant Video is on the Roku but not the AppleTV, while iTunes is on the AppleTV but not the Roku.

PS3, mofos.

Sporadically musing on the Royals at both Royals Review and Royalscentricity, pop culture at Inconsiderate Prick, SVU at Munch My Benson and on Twitter at Old Man Duggan

Should work great

if you have a decent wifi. I live in Baton Rouge and do the Mlb.tv through my computer and watch every game with no complaints. I’m thinking about purchasing a roku just for this because I have a wii and I watch netflix through it and it works great, but mlb doesn’t work with the wii, so I think the $50 roku purchase is well worth it.

Well the wii isn't mine

it is my wife’s purchase, but that’s good to know. ( I was always skeptical of that wii)
