Madonna was OK. But Katy should have performed at Halftime.

No question in my mind about this. Also, my wife and I had the most gender stereotyped evening ever, as she stopped watching after halftime to buy shoes online and watch The Good Wife on demand.

GWAR

has some offerings as well

The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.

Mayhem Lives It

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayhem_%28band%29

At some point in 1990, the members of Mayhem moved to “an old house in the forest” near Oslo.8 They began writing songs for their next album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. On 8 April 1991, Dead committed suicide in the house owned by the band. He was found by Euronymous with slit wrists and a shotgun wound to the head. Dead’s suicide note notably read “Excuse all the blood, cheers.” and included an apology for firing the weapon indoors. Instead of calling the police, Euronymous went to a nearby store and bought a disposable camera to photograph the corpse, after re-arranging some items.9 One of these photographs was later stolen and used as the cover of a bootleg live album entitled Dawn of the Black Hearts.10

Eventually, rumors surfaced that Euronymous made a stew with pieces of Dead’s brain, and made necklaces with fragments of Dead’s skull. Additionally, Euronymous claimed to have given these necklaces to musicians he deemed worthy.

The Green Manilishi with the Three Pronged Crown

In my naive and devil may care youth, I had a soft spot for Judas Priest. Downing. Tipton. Halford. Mebbe a cut above your stereotypical arena rock of the 70s…not as scary or heavy as sabbath, not as good as VH, but still kind of rocked.

by Nighthawk at the Diner on Feb 6, 2012 11:17 PM EST up reply actions

They Had A

Bit of pop sensibility. Livin’ After Midnight still sounds good after 25 years. I used to do 4 or 5 of their old songs in the early 80’s. They’re still plugging away at it, but Halford split from them.

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Feb 7, 2012 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, def a pop sensibility

I don’t mind them at all….what other Priest songs did you rock?

by Nighthawk at the Diner on Feb 7, 2012 6:40 PM EST up reply actions

Never Did That

One, and I didn’t sing any of them. Breakin’ The Law (we automatically cued this one up when the cops showed up at the keggers we were playing), You Don’t Have To Be Old To Be Wise, Killing Machine (my favorite), and I’m sure I forgot one. I just learned You Got Another Thing Comin’ when I left the band. Night Ranger’s Don’t Tell Me You Love Me was the other song I had just taught the kids. 1983, baby!

I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

by philofthenorth on Feb 7, 2012 9:36 PM EST up reply actions

You Got Another Thing Coming was one I cut my teeth on back in HS. I don't know Killing Machine, I'll have to dial it up

Diamonds & Rust & Electric Eye were among my faves. Night Ranger! Wow. 1983 is right. I remember listening to Night Ranger, Krokus, Accept, Micheal Schenker Group, Scorpions, etc…

by Nighthawk at the Diner on Feb 7, 2012 10:11 PM EST up reply actions

Diamonds And Rust

Was a Joan Baez cover; very bizarre. Krokus’s cover of American Woman was after I tried to convince the kids to rock it. I taught it to them. Same with Van Halen’s Pretty Woman.

Also, I imagine AC/DC laughs at our puny football. I mean, all that padding. Come on. No self-respecting Australian can take something seriously that involves all that padding.

That Padding Allows

Hits rugby players cannot fathom. Helmets and padding are weapons. It’s the same with boxing gloves. Bare knuckles fights went on forever because you’d break your hand hitting as hard as the gloves (and their added weight) let you do.

I Didn't Recall

This show for a good reason. I was stuck setting up band equipment in Clam Gulch. My female sax/keyboard booked us to play after the game. She thought it was a baseball game. Worst Super Bowl ever, and worst environment I’ve ever watched in. There were maybe 5 people there, and they had kids who were running toy cars across the hardwood dance floor and shrieking the whole time. I got paid.

Prince is clearly straight and aims at a straight audience,

not a gay one. True, he doesn’t appeal to everyone; I’m not a big fan, and thought he was a strange choice.

What the NFL needs to figure out is that most of their audience is at least country-tolerant, and get George Strait or Garth Brooks or Faith Hill or some combination to do halftime.

I'll have you know

My son was crying for an hour after that middle finger and I had to sit and explain to him what it meant and how offensive it was. His innocence was ROBBED.

Either that or he didn’t notice it at all and the more awkward conversation I actually had was why the woman in that commercial was in her underwear.

Why don’t they get a contemporary act that has mass appeal and is relatively safe? I have to think acts like the Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Adele, Katy Perry, etc. are recognizable enough for the masses and are at least a step up from the ancient tomes of Madonna.

If I remember right

Up with People holds the record for most halftime shows in Super Bowl history. It was 1972. America was square. The Silent Majority was square. The NFL was square. Up with People was incredibly square.

I remember being taken to an Up with People show in about 1974 at age 8. Even then I knew enough to inform my parents that it sucked.

But many are unaware of the group’s cultish utopian ideology, its political connectedness, and how it was funded by corporate America, part of a deliberate propaganda effort to discredit liberal counterculture in the 1960s and ’70s.

Up with People does have the record, with 4 SB performances

I read the article and checked Wikipedia, and they don’t seem too cultish to me. Conservative Christian, yes, and sponsored by major corporations, yes, but they didn’t make any secret of that. The one red flag I saw were allegations that they tried to arrange marriages, but it didn’t look like there was any real proof of that.

What I didn’t know is that the performers pay tuition, rather than being paid. It isn’t clear that they get university credit for it.

I'm still surprised that other channels haven't made a bigger deal out of Super Bowl halftime.

Or maybe I’m just ignorant because I don’t even have cabel anymore…

MTV could have spent the 30 minutes “world premiering” like 5 videos. Katy Perry, MIA, Korn, MGMT, and why not Toby Keith.

I imagine that FOX, CBS, and ABC could each have taken their best show and created some kind of 30 minute special – only broadcast once, or some nonsense.

other networks used to do this

MTV did a Beavis and Butthead one that got pretty big ratings. But after the NFL started making a bigger deal out of the halftime show and hiring big “names” to sing, the other networks pretty much stopped doing it.
