I am shocked that Jack Harry is still doing anything
He seemed to be on his way out of the KC sporting scene when I last watched him, in 1983.
"Things could always be worse." - Buddy Bell
"Are expectations almost too high?"
“You almost have to deliver this year, don’t you?”
“What’s a number—this team should be .500?”
The answer was a long rambling statement about how he expects them to “compete”.

NYRoyal, for the sake of your sanity, do not go end of the first clip.

"go through to the end of"
or for that matter, the beginning of the second one.

I think I’ll avoid it.

He Made A
Big point of the UI being able to play well at SS in case Escobar gets injured before he signed Yu-Bet.
I used to be an A's fan until they left town and got good.

and him being judged on throwaway statements like that....
are why he doesnt really want to say anything of substance in interviews

I Thought It
Was telling, since he punted Navarro so quickly.

i still dont get that move...
and i think it bothers me even more than the yuni signing…hopefully he just saw something in one or both of the pitchers they acquired and had to give something to get something….since we acquired navarro i thought he’d be a perfect utility guy….can play all over the IF and in the OF corners and even hit a little bit

There is a question as to whether Yamaico Don't Call Me Rey Navarro can actually play SS.
That doesn’t excuse trading Aviles for him in the first place if Yamaico couldn’t cut it there, but this is all water under a bridge constructed from our horrific nightmares and boundless pain.

aviles for a younger version of aviles made perfect sense where this team is in my mind
and once again, its not like our UI needs to be a gold glove SS…we already have that….also, i like navarro long term as a 2b than i do giavotella…i dont see how aviles for navarro could be considered a bad trade…thats just me though

But what evidence do we have that Navarro is actually a younger version of Aviles?
Navarro seems to be on the Miguel Cabrera Filling Out Track. Aviles is still able to hold down short in a pinch, which Navarro probably won’t be able to do at age 24. In theory, that trade made sense, but now we’re all staring down the barrel of a Cuban shotgun waiting for it to blow our fucking face off.

Have we already forgotten...
about the attitude problem? Yamaico apparently wasn’t happy as a bench player. Don’t know the extent of the problem, but I’m pretty sure we took the loss there.
that was mentioned like one time....
which is far less times than we read that butler didnt want to DH, that gordon was uncoachable, etc

It's having been mentioned seems to directly correlate to two things:
1) How long he donned the powder blues
2) His overall importance in the big picture as a borderline 25th man

one time as justification for the trade after he was traded?

Rumblings of attitude problems pre-dated his being traded.
They were spoken of during the season.

and they still traded aviles (also unhappy with his utility role)
for him…what changed?

My cringe was more about the Gia/Yuni discussion
where he said something along the lines of “if Gia can’t play well enough at 2B, we have season-long starter (from 2011) Yuni right there” with a big grin on his face. I think we’d better plus hope and plus hope that Gia exceeds expectations right off the bat (or that Yuni is somehow a much better 2B than SS).

The last 60 seconds or so
Jack: No more questions
Jack Harry can go step on a land mine
(metaphorically speaking of course)
The name of that song played at KC Comets games in the '80's was Giorgio Moroder's "The Chase." Now you know.
that said
it was a pretty good interview. He wasn’t afraid to push a little bit.

I'd give Jack a solid B
Given what I expected. I liked that he made Dayton go over the payroll limitation again and actually got a real answer – $75 to 80 million if the team is drawing 2.5 million fans (an average of 30,864 per game if you’re scoring at home). That may not be an answer many fans like, but it’s a real answer.
But the highlight has to be “What in the world were you there thinking bringing back Yuniesky Betancourt?”
Christ, if that's really what it takes to get the payroll to $75M
Then the Royals won’t get there until they’ve won a pennant first. If he’s telling the truth, it looks like no more than $65-70M for 2013.

i dont believe this stuff for a second...
i really think that dayton’s intentionally being conservative with these estimates…no reason to put yourself in a corner where you have to spend X amount of dollars because you said that at one point 4 years prior, even if it is not in the teams best interest long term

I do think he has to manage expectations and take some heat off ownership
But why even put out a number then? He said last year in a speech at the Chamber of Commerce that the Royals would never have a $100 million payroll (and repeated it in this interview), then talked about a $55-60 million limit in this market on blogger night, then backtracked to saying stronger attendance could push that to around $80 million, which he reiterated in the interview with Jack Harry.
Why not just say “we’ll spend as much as our revenue allows us to spend, and if our fans come out in greater numbers and buy more nachos that cost them $6 and us 5 cents, we’ll make more and we can spend more.”
The whole never getting to $100 million thing just makes you want to give up asa fan.
b/c he keeps getting harrassed b/c fans want a number...
so he gives them a number that is fairly conservative…if they get to that number, fans cant call him/glass a liar…if they go above, glass is a hero

If Glass goes above 80, great
But he’s not going to be a hero unless he does what Kauffman did – spend his own money.
he is spending his own money....
and it was alot different in kauffman’s day…an extra million made a huge difference…now that buys you half of a season of betancourt or a 16 year old dominican

by billybeingbilly on Feb 8, 2012 12:54 PM EST up reply actions
I think Kauffman did more than spend team revenues
Kauffman dipped into his own pocket to spend some of his personal wealth. I think that is what thelaundry is talking about. Glass just spends revenues on the team, which is what most owners do. That doesn’t make you a hero.

by Scott McKinney on Feb 8, 2012 5:13 PM EST up reply actions
ok...my point was...
that glass bought the team by himself…so any money in any royals bank account is david glass’ money. so, he is spending his own money from his own investment. and yeah, we hear about kauffman dipping deep into his pockets, but we gotta remember the team was a huge draw during those times and the baseball landscape was much more even financially

But I think spending beyond team revenues is spending beyond team revenues, regardless of how the team is drawing or what the economic landscape of the game is. Reinvesting revenues is safe and easy. Going beyond that to lose money in the hopes of getting pennants is special.

Also, don't forget
that the estimated value of the franchise was/is way, way, way higher than the sweetheart deal that Glass got when he bought the team. Due to the “inside trading”-type component of this business model, he was guaranteed to make a fortune on the team, even if they operated in the red.

Keeps getting harrassed?
How is Moore getting harrassed? By whom? In what manner? Sure fans want to know more and want bigger payrolls. But he usually keeps everything close to the vest. But here, he’s using actual numbers when he could just obfuscated and be very general.
I don’t know that this kind of number is the best public relations. Yes, it will make fans happy if/when the payroll goes higher than that. But until then, it will just piss off the fans.
He might be trying to lower expectations so that Glass can eventually surpass them. Or he might be lowering expectations to a realistic level because Glass really doesn’t want even a $75M payroll again until attendance is high enough to make that easily doable.

That may be
But that was also said when he put out his $55-60M payroll number. And right now the Royals are sitting at approximately $57M (including an estimate of Gordon’s 2012 salary).

that is weird that he's publicly said two very different numbers
Maybe the first lowball was too low, as in fan response was very negative? Now he’s raised it a bit, but couched that with the attendance qualification.

He may be underselling the payroll potential
But how is it good PR to say you’ll never be able to spend $100 million, which is what 3 teams in the division consistently spend? The Royals are selling hope, with a pinch of tradition (from George Brett, but definitely not the only other living retired number) to their fanbase. So why say never? Why not just say KC was once a great baseball town, and they’re trying to build a team that will make people want to pack the ballpark again, and if the K is rocking the way it did in the 70s and 80s, who knows?
No one needs to hear the small market spiel-even the casual fan understands it. Maybe instead of “Our Time” the slogan should be “We Think These Guys are Going to be Good, but Don’t Get Your Hopes Up Due to the Pervasive Economic Inequalities of Baseball.”
