Looks to stay within the $5 mill range.

Good start
Happy to see that they apparently will continue extension talks after agreeing on this year’s salary.
How is this a good start?
They’ve been talking about a long-term deal for week and now we have info that there’s a 1 year deal coming up.
Time to increase to Defcon 3.
Nah read the whole article
The sides are expected to resume extension talks once they agree on a 2012 salary.
I imagine this is just to give the two sides more time without having to worry about the arbitration deadlines.
"We don’t have guys with a long history of being effective in the seventh and eighth innings."
~Trey Hillman, master of understatements.
Right, the arbitration hearing is next week
so both sides have an incentive to agree on a 2012 salary now.
But once the one year deal is done either side can now break off negotiations
without consequence. I still view this as not really a good thing. There’s no guarantee it gets done during the year. The arbitration hearing served as a sort of deadline to motivate.
This was my first thought as well
We’ll see though, his arb hearing is coming up and both sides will probably want to avoid that.

they couldve broken them off without consequence before...he was going to get around 5 million this year regardless

There's also the danger that he has a BABIP-aided fluke-y season
On the level of last season, which would increase his price. They needed to sign him before the arb date.
whats the difference b/w november and march?
everyone knew what he was going to get paid this year…nobody’s giving up on the long term deal before the season. if it doesnt get done before the season, yes, i’ll be worried. it’s much too early to concern myself with that though.

There's a huge difference between November and March
If Alex Gordon hits .300/.375/.500 again he would cost the Royals more because, at that time, there would be two years of fantastic production and the Royals would have to pay him more.
where's he going to hit 300/375/500 in march?
spring training? you really think thats going to change his value?

Alex Gordon
The one year deal is good in all but if he has another great year its only going to cost the royals more money. Pay him the cash now. 4yrs 34million.

1% of ONE...sounds a bit like a Zephyr, and a bit like the Jicks
Did anyone see Sheehan bag on Glass in the latest Sports Illustrated? Me either, but I read a tweet about it or maybe saw a photo of it in photobucket, or tumblrd over it somewhere on FaceSpace. But yeah, the recent spending international and splashing the cash on the young colts is going to betray or portend spending future. Gordo, Hozmajesus, Moustuchus, mebbbe an arm or two, etc…we’ll know soon if he’s turned over a new leaf, or if he’s the same old scrooge douchebag he was when he first outmanuevered my man, my hero, my lover, my muse, MILES FUCKING PRENTICE.

Tweets from Nate Bukatay (810 Sports Radio):
Saw the report that Royals are offering Gordon 4 yrs, 30 million. I’ve been told Gordon’s camp wants 6 yrs, 80 mil. Seems like a big gap.
To me, a compromise of 5 years, in the 50-55 range oughta make sense for both sides.

Interesting information.
If that’s true, nobody’s been lying. They both want him here for the foreseeable future. But for good reason, the Royals only want 4 or 5 more years of him for now.
