Per @keithlaw, the Royals rank #5; Baseball America ranks them #3. Rumors of the farm system's demise are greatly exaggerated.

this is why we should not promote players
it weakens our farm system

What's funny
is that I think it was BA’s Jim Callis who first suggested the system would slip farther than that. Of course that was before Wil Myers’s performance in the AFL.
It may have in his book, but the BA lists are put together by a committee of three.

right
Before the season ended, Callis made a statement in a chat or Ask BA article that he thought the Royals would not be ranked in the top 5. The final lists in the book and on the site are done by committee, after input from the staff and everything they report, so it should not be too unexpected to see some changes between an opinion stated during the year and an opinion stated after the end of season due diligence.
I just thought it was funny that Callis might have been the guy who started the “rumors of the farm system’s demise.”
Ah, yes.

Some of that of course
Is because of “most athletic player in the 2011 draft” Bubba Starling. If he immediately flames out next year or falls on his face, a more likely possibility than I think a lot of people might admit, and the Royals graduate another class (Herrera, Monty, possibly Myers and Dwyer) this year, they’ll drop wayyy down.
We seemed to do well in LA too
Elier Hernandez and Adalberto Mondesi.
We also have more than a few guys that have the potential to “take a step” – Christian Colon, Yordano Ventura, Brian Brickhouse, Kyle Smith, Brett Eibner, plus our 2012 first round pick.
I also doubt Myers “graduates” this year. There simply isn’t anywhere for him to play unless someone gets hurt or traded.

Yeah, I doubt Myers does too
but we saw Perez rise meteorically. Myers is a better prospect closer to the Majors; it could happen.
Well, if Francoeur could play catcher
then Salvador would still be slogging his way through the bus leagues.

Guys like Calixte, Adam, or Junis could step up, too.
Hell, it’s very possible Cuthbert could be looking at top 25 status after next year if he can maintain what he did in the first half in the tough Midwest League last year as an 18-year-old he could be something special.
If we’re to believe the glowing scouting reports of Jason Adam from the ’10 Fall Instructs, he would seem to have a higher ceiling than his 2011 performance might belie.
