Hypothetical Thursday 4
It's Thursday where I am and that's what matters. Anyway. Eric Hosmer races out of the gates and bolstered by local fans gets voted as the starting 1B in the All-Star game. Considering the stiff competition, what does his triple slash and HR total look like at the break?

I think Hypothetical Hump Day is more aesthetically pleasing...
.310/.370/.520
I am the one who knocks.
and the defensive positioning changes recommended on RR...
help him with the nod
I am the one who knocks.
I don't see any slash line that could possibly overcome
the NY and Boston fan voting blocs. And don’t forget that Pujols now has a (seemingly) much larger fanbase (or potential fanbase) to pull votes from. Bottom line, it’s just not happening.
maybe it would be better to play LIKE his hair was on fire
I’m not sure how sustainable playing with your hair on fire would be.

only a 2.720 OPS?
He’ll never get voted in with such crappy numbers

no hos for ASG this year or in the near future
if i had to pick two that would make it, i would say soria and gordon, both as manager’s picks.

I do think there will be three
Gordon, Soria, and a third, which could be Butler, Perez, Escobar, Moose, or another pitcher.
I would offer
100-1 odds that Hosmer would not be voted in by the fans. He would have to be having an unbelievable season for it to happen. I would say a minimum of .350/.450/.650 might get him the prize.

Yeah after I posted this I fully realized just how stacked 1B is in the AL
Teixiera, Pujols, Gonzalez, Fielder/Cabrera, Morneau, all of whom are better than Hosmer at this point.
But hey, anything could happen.
Morneau would have to actually make it onto the field to be better than Hosmer.
There is no reason to believe that is likely.

He will need to tear it up in March and April to get the nation's attention.
Something like 15 HRs in April. Also, he needs to be hitting over 0.400

The whole time.
It needs to be a historic season to jump above HOFers

Maybe if he started "dating" a famous Celeb...
I’d like to see him cuckold Jay-Z and start banging Beyonce, or maybe he turns out to be baseball’s first “out” gay player and we find out his current partner is John Travolta.

It might be better if it was Mike Piazza.

Piazza would be interesting. Seeing him in the seats at the K. Goldberg interviewing him between innings.
So, Mike, do you give Hos any pointers or do you pretty much leave him to Seitzer’s evil clutches? Does being a homosexual provide you with any advantages when it comes to “reading” what another man is thinking? Is it true that you were once hetro, but were “flipped” shortly after your arrival to the big leagues by veteran pitcher, incendiary lover, and all around free thinker John Candelaria? A man rumored to have flipped a trail of former hetro’s in his powerful sex wake, including Bill Madlock, Jerry Reuss, and former WWE Wrestler “The Big Boss Man,” aka Ray Traylor?

But Hosmer, along with Yost, Getz, Frenchy, Chen and Kendall in support, will lead a covert ops mission into Iran to overthrow the Ahmadenijad regime, de-nuclearize the country, and hold free elections…only way he wins the All-Star vote.
I think it can happen, if a couple things occur
1. Royals have to be surprisingly good (or at least surprising to the national reporters) and appear in some Sunday Night games or whatnot for national exposure; either leading the division or in 2nd place.
2. One of the other AL 1B has an uncharacteristically down year or is inured.
3. One or more of Hosmer’s numbers is really flashy. If he is hitting .350 or more and on pace to hit between 40-50 HR, his OPS is almost irrelevant. Most voters don’t see OBP or SLG.
Here are the only numbers that matter
2011 Attendance and Metropolitan Statistical Area Population
2. NY Yankees (Texeira) – 3,653,680 MSA – 18,897,109
5. LA Angels (Pujols) – 3,166,321 MSA – 12,828,837
8. Boston (Gonzalez) – 3,054,001 MSA – 4,552,402
13. Detroit (Fielder) – 2,642,045 MSA – 4,296,250
27. Kansas City (Hosmer) – 1,724,450 MSA – 2,035,334
It’s not happening.

The only ones?
Don’t you think that’s a little cynical? There are players from small market teams that get in all the time.
Sure, small market teams land players on the All-Star TEAM all the time
However, it seems very difficult for them to get voted in as STARTERS, which is the hypothetical you posed.
For example, here is the list of 2011 AL starters:
C Alex Avila, DET
1B Adrian Gonzalez, BOS
2B Robinson Cano, NYY
3B Adrian Beltre, TEX
SS Asdrubal Cabrera, CLE
OF Jose Bautista, TOR
OF Curtis Granderson, NYY
OF Josh Hamilton, TEX
DH David Ortiz, BOS
Not very many (if any) small market guys there. Basically Cabrera and that’s it.

So we flip Hosmer and Escobar for the first half.
Problem solved!

Not that I wish for injuries,
but wouldn’t it be funny if both Fielder and Pujols got hurt? Again, don’t wish anything horrible on anyone, except that I can’t help but think it would be funny for those contracts to start out in an over the top horrible way.
