SURPRISE, Ariz. -- The news on Royals closer Joakim Soria couldn’t be much worse. An examination Monday revealed "definite damage" in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow and seems likely to require surgery.
General manager Dayton Moore acknowledged Soria might require reconstructive elbow surgery, commonly known as Tommy John surgery. Soria underwent that procedure in 2003 to replace the same ligament.
Nothing to minimize now. Soria now takes his place alongside David DeJesus as Royals who were not traded in time. For thoughts on the bullpen moving forward, check out Matt's piece at Fangraphs.
I think we have to blame Buster Olney for this. He raved about Perez's "presence", setting off a chain of negative events.
