So yesterday many of us got to see Yuniesky Betancourt play second base. I'm just an amateur scout like the rest of us, but this is what I saw:

* He hit a nice solo HR off of a AAA pitcher. If he can hit a bunch of home runs this year, he could be valuable. If not, I think we'll have a problem

* He handled a routine groundball that was about three paces to his right to start a double play. It was a routine play, handled well.

* Vernon Wells hit a groundball up the middle. The IF was positioned to pull so even though the ball was nearly straight over second base (a little to the 1B side), Yuni didn't have far to go to get to it. He nearly got to the ball, but couldn't get his glove on it, and the ball went into CF for a single. I thought his range to his right was supposed to be his strong suit. That was unimpressive to say the least.

* Yuni covered the bag on a stolen base attempt. The throw wasn't quite perfect. It went right in front of second base. Yuni needed to handle a short hop to take the throw, or at least get in front of it to stop the ball. Instead, he completely misplayed the short hop (even though he was there in time to easily handle the throw) and the ball bounced into CF, allowing the base runner to go to third base. The official scorer ruled it an error on Quintero. While the throw was a little off, it should have been easily handled.

*Yuni was on second base when Jason Bourgeois hit a groundball to shortstop. Yuni ran to third and attempted to screen the shortstop by jumping over the bouncing ball. But he forgot that his vertical leap is about 3 inches and he failed to clear the ball. The ball hit him and he was out by rule, with Bourgeois safe at first with a "single". This is a good microcosm of Yuniesky Betancourt. His fundamentals and baseball IQ are overrated and his athleticism and physical condition are well below average. That's a powerfully bad combination.

But that's just my opinion. What did everyone else see? Also, I'm sure others have seen him play more this season. What did you see? What is your evaluation of him this year? Hitting, fielding, base running. To me, he looks like a liability at all three. What say you?
