After watching several Royals game telecasts, I can say that Mr. Hudner is not in our league. After listening to the likes of Frank White and Paul Splittorf doing the color commentary, Hudner pales by comparison. White and Splitt had a superb understanding of the game and an articulate manner of expression that drew you in to their commentary. You seldom questioned their opinions and they treated their roles with professional respect by not pandering to their audience nor under estimating their audiences knowledge of the game. And then, when you look at our past play-by-play announcers...Matthews, Lefebvre, Trease, etc., Mr. Hudner's comparative lack of skills really becomes apparent.
Mr. Hudner is neither articulate nor does he possess a professional demeanor. He consistently leans on the overused cliches of of the sport, takes great pains to explain the obvious and displays an awkward sense of humor. In short, he is not qualified to be the TV color announcer for a professional baseball team especially one with such a respected and respectible lineage of color and play-by-play commentators such as has the Royals.
The sooner a change is made, the better we will all be for it.
