I know it's not popular, but it's time to trade Wil Myers.
I don't mean pull the trigger this instant, but this year or else this offseason, it needs to happen.
His value is probably about as high now as it ever will be, and every day he plays in AAA is a risk that he will fade or get hurt and lower his value. Yes, he could also mash and raise it, but it's a risk.
Now, I don't mean trade Myers just for the sake of trading him. We absolutely HAVE to hit a home run on this trade. It needs to be a legit #1 starter, 25ish, with at least one preferably two or more years of team control remaining. If this person doesn't exist, then we take our chances with what we've got, but we have to try.
If that means Frenchy or Cain or Maier or Lough or some journeyman free agent is playing right field for the foreseeable future, I'm a 100% OK with that. Especially if we can get some production out of some combination of Esky/Gio/Sal, it's a sacrifice well worth a legit ace.
If we had a rotation of 1) Legitimate Ace TBNL 2) Danny Duffy 3) Jake Odorizzi 4) Felipe Paulino 5) Luke Hochevar/Mike Montgomery/some other warm body, I think we can win with the lineup as constructed.
If we keep the rotation we have now, I don't think we can achieve what we want to achieve even with Wil Myers in the lineup.
Obviously, I'd love to keep Wil Myers AND get a legit ace, but short of dropping $150 million on Cole Hamels, which isn't going to happen and shouldn't anyway, that's not realistic. You have to give up something of value in order to receive something of value in return. This is our only hope.
