Hosmer's Ground Ball Distribution

Stay connected for news and updates

With Eric Hosmer having some bad luck on ground balls in play this year, I was wondering if he has changed his batted ball profile on ground balls from last year. Here is a chart of the percentage of ground balls hit by Hosmer in 2011 and 2012. The data is divided into 10 zones starting at the right field line and going to the left field line.

2011 Cumulative 2012 Cumulative
Right Field Line 9% 9% 9% 9%
- 14% 24% 13% 23%
- 18% 42% 17% 40%
- 14% 56% 13% 53%
- 9% 65% 15% 68%
- 8% 73% 6% 74%
- 14% 87% 13% 87%
- 9% 96% 6% 92%
- 2% 97% 2% 94%
Left Field Line 3% 100% 6% 100%

Notes:

  • The values are basically identical, especially if a person looks at the cumulative values.
  • 2/3rds of all his grounders are on the right side.
  • Less than 15% of them go to the left 1/3 of the infield.

Looks like Hosmer will be seeing teams shift him for quite a while if he only uses 2/3 of the field.
