Do You Want to Play Professional Baseball? The Odds Are You Will Be a Royal Soon

So many Royals.

The Royals have already used seventeen position players this season, and when Salvador Perez of the incredible Perezence returns, that will be 18. The Royals have used four second basemen and five centerfielders alone. Ned Yost has used 34 different lineups - and that's with his strict allegiance to Missouri and international law that Alcides Escobar and Jeff Francoeur play every day.

20 pitchers have already appeared, 21 if you count MITCH. Ten players have already made a start for the Royals. They also had that one pitcher around for a few days who never even played, so bonus points for an extra pointless roster move.

This just seems like a lot. And these numbers will continue to grow. And the really curious thing is that so many of these guys are interchangeable. It's just pure roster churn, like some simulated video game season running on an unmanned console at the bottom of a nuclear sub. Entirely neutral, value-zero, decisions seemingly without context, meaning, or consequence. Chris Getz today, Irving Falu tomorrow. Luis Mendoza, Jesse Chavez, Sean O'Sullivan, here, gone, traded. Tommy Hottovy up, Tommy Hottovy down. Tommy Hottovy up.
