Would You Trade for Troy Tulowitzki?

Dude does this all the time as some kind of nervous tick.

Would you trade for Troy Tulowitzki? Let's say the Rockies wanted to blow up their roster and start over. They look to trade Tulo in a salary dump move. Let's say they offer a Tulo for Alcides Escobar deal.

Tulo is currently hurt, and in my mind, he's seemingly always hurt. That's not actually quite the case, though he's missed significant time in three out of the last six seasons (if you count this one). He's also very good when he plays. He's a good shortshop who can hit. Nice. Dave Cameron repeatedly talks about how much he loves his contract, and I fee like I'm the only one who isn't a fan. Here's the salary breakdown in needlessly dramatic form:

  • 2012: $8.2 million
  • 2013: $10 million
  • 2014: $16 million
  • 2015: $20 million
  • 2016: $20 million
  • 2017: $20 million
  • 2018: $20 million
  • 2019: $20 million
  • 2020: $14 million
  • 2012: $15 million (team option, $4 million buyout)

A good bet is that after a half decade or more of general salary stagnation, we're headed for another period of growth. So like I used to write in the early days of this blog, $20 million won't seem like quite so much in... But it also kinda will. $20 million is half a roster or league minimum guys, more or less.

Escobar now has his own contract, which is basically $3 million per for 2013-2015 and then two team options. Cheap, but not free.

So... would you make this trade?
