The Kansas City Royals won the second game of Sunday's double-header, defeating the Boston Red Sox 5-4 in 10 innings.
Kansas City trailed Boston with four outs left, but Billy Butler hit a solo home-run with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game at 4. Lorenzo Cain drove in the winning run by drawing a walk off Andrew Miller with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the tenth inning.
Alex Gordon led the top of the tenth with a single, and finished the day 3-5 with a home run and a double. Alcides Escobar went 2-5 on the day, and drew a walk against Miller in the top of the tenth. Eric Hosmer also had a multi-hit game, while George Kottaras smacked a solo home run in the top of the fifth.
Jeremy Guthrie battled for six innings, allowing too many baserunners but only surrendering four runs. Guthrie allowed eight hits and gave up four walks, but the Red Sox could not capitalize with runners in scoring position.
Luke Hochevar followed Guthrie with a scoreless seventh, then Kelvin Herrera tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Hochevar. Herrera ran into some trouble in the bottom of the ninth, but his stuff looked electric and he fanned three Boston hitters.
Greg Holland earned his second save of the day, striking out the side in the bottom of the tenth to close the game.
It's far too early to take the standings seriously, but the Royals have sole possesion of first place in the AL Central. The team has a 1 game lead over the Minnesota Twins and a 1.5 game lead over the Detroit Tigers in the division. Kansas City has an off-day on Monday before traveling to Detroit for a three-game series.
