Today in Royals History: April 6

Peter G. Aiken-US PRESSWIRE

A legend gets his first home run as the Royals set a record.

In the second game of the 1974 season, the Royals and Twins squared off at Royals Stadium. Bill Hands started for the Twins and didn't get out of the first inning, allowing seven runs on seven hits.

The Royals were just getting started.

They added three more in the second, six more in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

In the seventh, Frank White led off against Tom Burgmeier. White wasn't the Royals regular second baseman in '74. That was Cookie Rojas. Rojas started the game, but was pulled in the fifth with the Royals leading by a score of 14-6. In this plate appearance, White went yard, for the first home run of his career. It was the only home run he hit all season.

That made the score 20-6. The Royals weren't done. They tacked on three more in the eight, pushing their total to 23 runs. That total was the franchise record for runs that stood until 2004.
