"They are who we thought they were and we [might as well] let them off the hook."

Apologies to Dennis Green. As a KC fan in the rabid Royals' hotbed of Rochester, NY, I feel everyone's pain. And I can't fault James Shields for deciding to become Luke Hochevar today. Eventually James had to become a real Royal, having been immersed in the destructive element for a few months now.

We do have a fatal flaw, don't we? We always do our dangdest to believe that this year will be different. We believe that Moose and Hosmer will turn it around. We believe the bullpen will continue to be the 2012 bullpen. We even hope that Frenchy will redo that career year. Oh, eventually, we realize that "they are who we thought they were," really, the players and team that we feared would play exactly like... well exactly like they've played for the last 20 games. So each year we go from Pollyanna-like hope to modest disbelief to bitter resignation and snarkiness in three weeks. (Two weeks in years where we lose 12 in a row and get it over with early.)

On the Glass half full side of life, now we can enjoy other teams and games for the pure joy they may bring. Because it's best to let it out, spew our angry amazement, and detach in a healthy Buddhist way.

Closing note: anyone who bats Chris Getz leadoff two days in a row should be sent to AAA without dinner. This man will never be known as "Neddy Ballgame."
