The Second week of The Dominican Summer League is over. The DSL Royals went 3 and 3. I'll being looking to follow this summer the players listed below. I don't know much about the DSL, so I might be missing someone of interest.
2011 signings: Emmanual Camacho (LHP) and Angelo Castellano (3B)
2012 signings: Julio Pinto (RHP), Alberto Saez (OF), Junior Reyes (LHP), Ofriedy Reyes (RHP), and Jose Martinez (SS)
Angelo Castellano in 2012 put up the following numbers 647 OPS and 102 wRC+.
Now a look at the second week and overall stats.
Angelo Castellano Age 18, 2nd week: PA 22, 7H, 1 2B, 1 BB, 3 SB, 2 RBI, 4 R
overall: BB% 12.5, K% 2.1, 984 OPS, ISO 053, 189 wRC+
Although he makes contact and has a good eye, the lack of power makes him less intriguing as a 3B prospect, although he was originally signed as a SS. I believe that the DSL lacks power in general with lots of young men 16, 17, 18 years old, so, maybe his body projects for more power later. Note: the DSL Royals have yet to hit a home run.
Jose Martinez Age 16, 2nd week PA 22, 7 H, 2 2B, 1 BB, 1 SB (2 CS), 5 RBI, 1 R
overall: BB% 4.5, K% 13.6, 778 OPS, ISO 105, 125 wRC+
Very young, He is one of the youngest players from the 2012 class. If he plays good defense, then he may project to be a prospect as a slap hitting SS prospect. Also, who knows what his body will be like in 2 years.
Alberto Saez Age 16, 2nd week PA 15 1 H, 1 2B, 2 BB, 1R
overall: BB% 13, K% 30.4, 287 OPS, ISO 053, wRC+ 7
He is considered to be a slow mover due to a slight body. Got his first DSL hit and got his wRC+ positive this week.
Julio Pinto Age 17, 2nd week 5 IP, 1 GS, 6 K, 1 BB
overall 7.4 K/9, 2.03 BB/9, 0 HRA, 2.03 ERA, 2.45 FIP
Julio is the DSL player I like the most as a future prospect. He has a fastball around 90 with a changeup and curve. A very good third game from him this week.
Emmanual Camacho Age 18, 2nd week: 5 IP, 1 GS, 3 K, 3 BB
overall: 10.13 k/9, 3.38 BB/9, 1 HRA, 2.25 ERA, 3.70 FIP
Made a mistake last week listing him with 3 HRA, it was only 1. I don't know much about him as a holdover from the 2011 class.
Junior Reyes Age 17, 2nd week 2 IP, 1 GS, 2 K, 0 BB
overall 7.5 K/9, 4.5 BB/9, 1 HRA, 6.00 ERA, 6.70 FIP
Reyes tops out in the high 80's with a curveball. He is said to have a good feel for pitching.
Ofriedy Gomez Age 17, 2nd week 3 IP, 0 GS, 4 K, 2 BB
overall 6.35 K/9, 11.12 BB/9, 0 HRA, 1.59 ERA, 6.02 FIP
Good fastball, but he is considered raw.
Many top Latin free agent signings skip DSL and come straight to America, like Salvador Perez, Cheslor Cuthbert, and Raul Mondesi. Our top 2012 signing Samir Duenez (3B), I believe will skip DSL. However, others prospects like Yordana Ventura and Kelvin Herrera spent a year or two in the DSL.
The International signing period will start soon, July 2. The Royals will have a pool of $2,988,000. For comparison, top pool money is (Astros) $4,943,700 and low pool money is (Nationals) $1,846,900. The Royals have been linked to Cristhian Vasquez (LF), Smaykin Gonzalez (SS), Yeyson Yrrizarri (SS), Lewin Diaz (1B/OF), and Lucas Tirado (2B/SS). There is good information about the international free agents at minorleagueball.com:
mlbtraderumors.com link the Royals and Cristhian Vasquez at $800,000.
Editor's Note: Offriedy Gomez was inaccurately listed as Offriedy Reyes in the original post.
