The Third week of The Dominican Summer League is over. The DSL Royals went 4 and 2. Although the players I said I would be following in this series are all 6 figure signings and mostly doing well in the DSL, having looked at the profiles of some of the players in Arizona and Burlington, I may have left out a few players who might be able to graduate to America. The player outside my focus that looks the most interesting to me is Carlos Diaz (2B). So, I'll give him a look this week and maybe include a weekly shout-out to anyone else who piques my interest.
Also, the AZL Royals started playing this week. As expected last years highest paid youngster Samir Duenez skipped DSL and is on the AZL Royals, same with Ryan Dale. Also, recent star graduates of the DSL Royals Wander Franco and Cristian Colon are on the AZL roster. Other 2012 DSL graduates on the AZL Royals roster are Igor Feliz (P), Luis Melgar (P) (4 years in DSL), Jairo Munez (P), Jesus Ortiz (P), Ronny Rios (P), Harol Rosario (P), Cesar Gonzalez (C), Jeckson Flores (SS), Alfredo Patino (1B), Santos Cabrera (LF), and the memorable Brawlun Gomez (RF).
The following players I will try keep track of this summer.
2011 signings: Emmanual Camacho (LHP) and Angelo Castellano (3B)
2012 signings: Julio Pinto (RHP), Alberto Saez (OF), Junior Reyes (LHP), Ofriedy Gomez (RHP), and Jose Martinez (SS)
For reference, holdover Angelo Castellano in 2012 put up the following numbers 647 OPS and 102 wRC+.
Bonus DSL Royal of the Week Carlos Diaz, age 20 (2B).
Carlos Diaz BB% 11.7, K% 10.4, 770 OPS, ISO 032, 137 wRC+
Now a look at the second week and overall stats.
Angelo Castellano Age 18, 3rd week: PA 27, 4H, 0 2B, 3 BB, 1 CS, 3 RBI, 3 R
overall: BB% 12.0, K% 8.0, 785 OPS, ISO 033, 140 wRC+
Angelo falls back closer to last years numbers for BB% and K%. The lack of power puts most of his worth in his BA, which fell this week.
Jose Martinez Age 16, 3rd week PA 21, 5 H, 1 2B, 1 BB, 0 SB, 2 RBI, 2 R
overall: BB% 4.5, K% 11.9, 718 OPS, ISO 086, 112 wRC+
Ok, but slightly below average week for Jose. He did lower his K%, though.
Alberto Saez Age 16, 3rd week PA 15, 4 H, 1 2B, 4 BB, 1RBI,
overall: BB% 18.4, K% 21.1, 558 OPS, ISO 067, wRC+ 84
Considered a slow mover, Alberto had a good week improving his numbers across the board.
The DSL Royals hit their first (and still only) home run this week, thanks to Misael Bueno (age 19, OF).
Julio Pinto Age 17, 3rd week 5 IP, 1 GS, 4 K, 4 BB
overall 7.36 K/9, 3.44 BB/9, 0 HRA, 1.47 ERA, 3.04 FIP
Julio was a little wild with the 4 walks, but effective in only giving up an unearned run to win his second game.
Emmanual Camacho Age 18, 3rd week: 2.2 IP, 1 GS, 2 K, 4 BB
overall: 9.28 k/9, 5.91 BB/9, 1 HRA, 1.69 ERA, 4.33 FIP
Another pitcher that was wild this week.
Junior (AKA Yunior) Reyes Age 17, 3rd week 4,2 IP, 1 GS, 6 K, 3 BB, 1 HRA
overall 9.28 K/9, 5.06 BB/9, 2 HRA, 5.06 ERA, 6.11 FIP
Nice K numbers, but the BB and HRA are troubling.
Ofriedy Gomez Age 17, 3rd week 3 IP, 0 GS, 4 K, 0 BB, 0H
overall 8.31 K/9, 7.27 BB/9, 0 HRA, 1.04 ERA, 4.12 FIP
Offriedy had a very good long relief appearance this week
