The Bird At Home Plate: An Ornithological Inquiry

In this past depressing week, replete with our hitters flailing away at third strikes while runners at third and second rot away, it would be easy to overlook one of our few heros. The Bird At Home Plate served us well on Sunday, attacking the plate in the critical ninth inning behind a Holland fastball, thoroughly befuddling the hopeless Sox hitter. He treid once again, without the same success, Tuesday night. When he/she became the focus of the TV broadcast, they showed a nice closeup of him or her resting on the grass. Ryan then informed us that "the audio man identified him as a king finch." First, Audio Man, there's no such thing as a "king finch." Second, Audio Man, I know finches, and The Bird At Home Plate is no finch. As a mere intermediate West Coast oriented birder, I can offer no positive identification. But my best guess is that this noble creature is a Western Kingbird. Another possibility is a Say's Phoebe, but that seems unlikely. So please, before we move on and forget, please help us identify this hero.
