The Fourth week of The Dominican Summer League is over. The DSL Royals went 3 and 3. The players I said I would be following in this series are all 6 figure signings and mostly doing well in the DSL.
As a newbie to following the DSL, I find the profiles of who makes it from the DSL to be interesting. This week we had the interesting developement of Ariel Estrades (17th round draft pick in 2012) being demoted to the DSL.
Last week I mentioned the graduates of the 2012 DSL and forgot the biggest star of all, Miguel Almonte (P). He spent 2011 and parts of 2012 in the DSL before being promoted to Arizona in late 2012. It will be interesting to see if anyone gets a mid-season promotion this year.
The following players I will try keep track of this summer.
2011 signings: Emmanual Camacho (LHP) and Angelo Castellano (3B)
2012 signings: Julio Pinto (RHP), Alberto Saez (OF), Junior Reyes (LHP), Ofriedy Reyes (RHP), and Jose Martinez (SS)
The position players had a generally good week, but the younger pitchers stuggeled with their contorl this week.
Bonus DSL Royal of the Week Sandy Garces, age 19 (SP-L).
Sandy Garces 5.94 K/9, 2.16 BB/9, 2 HRA, 2.70 ERA, 4.16 FIP
Now a look at the second week and overall stats. (I'm shifting to AB from PA since it is easier to keep track of weekly splits.)
Angelo Castellano Age 18, 4th week: AB 19, 8H, 1 2B, 0 BB, 3K, 1 CS, 2 RBI, 2 R
overall: BB% 10.2, K% 10,2, 747 OPS, ISO 041, 128 wRC+
A good week that doesn't seem to be reflected in his numbers, I wonder if I made a typo last week or if the overall numbers I am taking from fangraphs weren't up to date when I recorded them.
Jose Martinez Age 16, 4th week AB 22, 7 H, 3 2B, 1 3B, 0 BB, 3 K, 2 RBI, 5 R
overall: BB% 3.6, K% 13.1, 716 OPS, ISO 093, 111 wRC+
Good power output this week with 4 extra base hits.
Alberto Saez Age 16, 4th week AB 11, 2 H, 1 3B, 1 BB, 2K, 1 SB, 1RBI,
overall: BB% 14.3, K% 20.4, 497 OPS, ISO 051, wRC+ 66
Considered a slow mover, Alberto had an OK week.
Still only one homerun hit by the DSL Royals all year.
Julio Pinto Age 17, 4th week 3 IP, 1 GS, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 HRA
overall 7.17 K/9, 3.80 BB/9, 1 HRA, 2.11 ERA, 3.90 FIP
Another tough game for Julio with 2 BB and a home run allowed in a very short outing.
Emmanual Camacho Age 18, 4th week: 9.2 IP, 2 GS, 4 K, 7 BB
overall: 7.47 k/9, 5.17 BB/9, 2 HRA, 2.30 ERA, 4.92 FIP
Another pitcher that was wild this week.
Junior (AKA Yunior) Reyes Age 17, 4th week 4.2 IP, 1 GS, 5 K, 2 BB
overall 9.39 K/9, 4.70 BB/9, 2 HRA, 4.11 ERA, 5.16 FIP
Nice K numbers, but the BB% is still too high.
Ofriedy Gomez Age 17, 4th week didn't pitch
overall 8.31 K/9, 7.27 BB/9, 0 HRA, 1.04 ERA, 4.12 FIP
