The seventh week of The Dominican Summer League is over. The DSL Royals went 4 and 4, but lost 3 to the first place Red Sox to fall 4 games behind. They made up a rained out game and a suspended game this week.. Unfortunately, after a good start many of the 6 figure signing players I'm following have struggled lately. It would be nice to hear some scouting reports about the players instead of just seeing the stats, because, I don't see the star graduates similar to last year with Cristian Cano, Wander Franco and top prospect Miguel Almonte. The stars of the team are older 19 and 20 year old pitchers. Last week three 19 year olds were called up to the Arizona Royals.
Pedro Fernandez, 19, RHP, 12IP, 11.25 K/9, 2.25 BB/9, 1.45 FIP
Eddy Melo, 19, C, wRC+ 92
Carlos Herrera, 19, LHP, 34.1 IP, 7.08 K/9, 2.88 BB/9, 2.97 FIP
As a newbie to following the DSL, I find the profiles of who makes it from the DSL to be interesting.
The following players I will try keep track of this summer.
2011 signings: Emmanual Camacho (LHP) and Angelo Castellano (3B)
2012 signings: Julio Pinto (RHP), Alberto Saez (OF), Junior Reyes (LHP), Ofriedy Gomez (RHP), and Jose Martinez (SS)
Bonus DSL Royal of the Week Felix Familia, age 17 (LHP). 17.2 IP
Felix Familia 6.62 K/9, 5.09 BB/9, 0 HRA, 0.00 ERA, 3.43 FIP
Now a look at the second week and overall stats. (I'm shifting to AB from PA since it is easier to keep track of weekly splits.) I'll also include stats for the suspended game made up this week. Also, due to make-up double headers, many games were only 7 innings.
Angelo Castellano Age 18, 7th week: AB 23, 6H, 5 BB, 1K, 1 SB, 1 CS, 2 RBI, 1 R
overall: BB% 11.0, K% 9.7, 721 OPS, ISO 030, 124 wRC+
The Walks and K %'s look good, more walks than strikeouts again, but for an 18 year old 3B the lack of power is concerning.
Jose Martinez Age 16, 7th week AB 26, 7 H, 2 2B, 1 BB, 1 K, 4 RBI, 5 R
overall: BB% 3.3, K% 9.3, 695 OPS, ISO 096, 108 wRC+
The ISO looks good for a 16 year old SS. But the BB% is a concern. He lowered K% below 10 this week.
Alberto Saez Age 16, 7th week AB 3, 1 H, 2 BB, 0K, 2 RBI, 1 R
overall: BB% 13.2, K% 18.4, 674 OPS, ISO 081, wRC+ 109
I don't know why, but he had a long layoff and didn't play from July 10-18. If not for the suspended game, he would have had only one game on here.
Still only one homerun hit by the DSL Royals all year.
Julio Pinto Age 17, 7th week 5.2 IP, 2 GS, 6 K, 5 BB
overall 6.75 K/9, 4.50 BB/9, 1 HRA, 3.66 ERA, 4.08 FIP
He got his k/9 rate up a tick, but the walks just keep piling up.
Emmanual Camacho Age 18, 7th week: 8.1 IP, 2 GS, 6 K, 5 BB, 2 hits
overall: 7.04 k/9, 5.87 BB/9, 2 HRA, 1.47 ERA, 4.63 FIP
He was effectively wild in two starts this week. He interestingly has given up more walks than hits.
Junior (AKA Yunior) Reyes Age 17, 7th week 5.2 IP, 0 GS, 5 K, 6 BB
overall 9.13 K/9, 7.15 BB/9, 2 HRA, 3.18 ERA, 5.23 FIP
Nice K numbers, but the BB% is still too high.
Ofriedy Gomez Age 17, 7th 2.2 IP, 0 GS, 3 BB, 1K
overall 7.30 K/9, 8.03 BB/9, 0 HRA, 2.19 ERA, 4.74 FIP
More walks than strikeouts, not good.
I have not heard any news on how the Royals will spend the other $900K for IFA's. Smaykin Gonzalez is still available, But Wander Franco is gone. Also, some players have yet to reach their 16th birthday.
