I'm in the midst of finals week but, I still wanted to get something up this week. So, I won't have a chance to double check my numbers.
The eigth week of The Dominican Summer League is over. The DSL Royals went 6 and 2, 2 and 1/2 games behind the first place Red Sox. Unfortunatelly, after a good start many of the 6 figure signing players I'm following have struggled lately. It would be nice to hear some scouting reports about the players instead of just seeing the stats, because, I don't see the star graduates similar to last year with Cristian Cano, Wander Franco and top prospect Miguel Almonte. The stars of the team are older 19 and 20 year old pitchers.
As a newbie to following the DSL, I find the profiles of who makes it from the DSL to be interesting.
The following players I will try keep track of this summer.
2011 signings: Emmanual Camacho (LHP) and Angelo Castellano (3B)
2012 signings: Julio Pinto (RHP), Alberto Saez (OF), Junior Reyes (LHP), Ofriedy Gomez (RHP), and Jose Martinez (SS)
Bonus DSL Royal of the Week Cornelio Valerio, age 19 (LF) a recent free agent pick-up
Cornelio Valerio 9.7 BB%, 11.3 K%, 729 OPS, ISO 094, 125 wRC+
Now a look at the eigth week and overall stats. (I'm shifting to AB from PA since it is easier to keep track of weekly splits.)
Angelo Castellano Age 18, 8th week: AB 17, 3H, 4 BB, 0K, 0 SB, 1 CS, 2 RBI, 2 R
overall: BB% 11.9, K% 8.5, 710 OPS, ISO 040, 120 wRC+
The Walks and K %'s look good, more walks than strikeouts again, but for an 18 year old 3B the lack of power is concerning.
Jose Martinez Age 16, 8th week AB 20, 3 H, 1 2B, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 RBI, 1 R
overall: BB% 4.6, K% 10.4, 664 OPS, ISO 090, 100 wRC+
The ISO looks good for a 16 year old SS. But the BB% is a concern. He bumped the BB% up by a percent this week.
Alberto Saez Age 16, 8th week AB 22, 2 H, 2 BB, 6K, 1 RBI, 1 R
overall: BB% 12, K% 20, 568 OPS, ISO 060, wRC+ 80
He has struggled since his layoff and fallen below average.
Still only one homerun hit by the DSL Royals all year.
Julio Pinto Age 17, 8th week 5 IP, 1 GS, 2 K, 1 BB
overall 6.32 K/9, 4.14 BB/9, 1 HRA, 3.16 ERA, 3.93 FIP
He got his walks under control this week, but the K's dropped also.
Emmanual Camacho Age 18, 8th week: 6 IP, 1 GS, 3 K, 0 BB
overall: 6.63 k/9, 4.91 BB/9, 2 HRA, 1.47 ERA, 4.24 FIP
A decent start this week, but more K's would be nice.
Junior (AKA Yunior) Reyes Age 17, 8th week 4 IP, 1 GS, 2 K, 3 BB
overall 8.44 K/9, 7.09 BB/9, 2 HRA, 2.70 ERA, 5.11 FIP
Nice K numbers, but the BB% is still too high. You BB% is high when you walk 3 in 4 innings, but your BB% goes down.
Ofriedy Gomez Age 17, 8th 3 IP, 0 GS, 0 BB, 1K
overall 6.46 K/9, 6.46 BB/9, 0 HRA, 2.35 ERA, 4.50 FIP
The K's and BB's are even this week.
I have not heard any news on how the Royals will spend the other $900K for IFA's. Smaykin Gonzalez is still available, But Wander Franco is gone. Also, some players have yet to reach their 16th birthday.
