DSL Report August 18

The eleventh week of The Dominican Summer League is over. The DSL Royals went 1 and 5, and fell 4 games behind the first place Red Sox with 7 games to play. The playoffs are probably not going to happen, although there are 2 games left with the Red Sox.

Most of the 6 figure signing players I'm following have mostly stabilized lately. I don't see the star graduates similar to last year with Cristian Cano, Wander Franco, Brawlun Gomez, and top prospect Miguel Almonte. But, most likely Angelo Castellano and Emmanual Camacho will get promoted next year. Jose Martinez has a chance for promotion if his defense is good, although he could be blocked at Arizona by Martin Gasperini. I'm thinking that Julio Pinto might start in Arizona or at least be in Arizona at some point next year. The rest will probably start the year in the DSL again. However, quick promotion could follow if they start 2014 hot.

As a newbie to following the DSL, I find the profiles of who makes it from the DSL to be interesting.

The following players I will try keep track of this summer.
2011 signings: Emmanual Camacho (LHP) and Angelo Castellano (3B)
2012 signings: Julio Pinto (RHP), Alberto Saez (CF), Junior Reyes (LHP), Ofriedy Gomez (RHP), and Jose Martinez (SS)

Bonus DSL Royal of the Week Reinaldo Cepin, age 19 (LHP)
Reinaldo Cepin 7.84 K/9, 1.74 BB/9, 0 HRA, 2.61 ERA, 2.04 FIP

Now a look at the tenth week and overall stats. (I'm shifting to AB from PA since it is easier to keep track of weekly splits.)

Angelo Castellano Age 18, 11th week: AB 17, 4H, 3 BB, 2K, 1 SB, 0 CS, 0 RBI, 0 R
overall: BB% 12.1, K% 9.2, 692 OPS, ISO 049, 114 wRC+
He had an average week.

Jose Martinez Age 16, 11th week AB 19, 4 H, 3 BB, 1 K, 0 RBI, 2 R, 2 SB, 0 CS
overall: BB% 6.9, K% 8.6, 682 OPS, ISO 097, 105 wRC+
Once again a pretty average week from one of the DSL Royals top hitters.

Alberto Saez Age 16, 11th week AB 12, 1 H, 0 BB, 4K, 0 RBI, 0 R
overall: BB% 8.6, K% 23.0, 498 OPS, ISO 041, wRC+ 58
Considered Raw and a slow mover, he has fallen back after a hot streak that put his stats to average.

Julio Pinto Age 17, 11th week 5 IP, 1 GS, 3 K, 2 BB
overall 6.66 K/9, 3.86 BB/9, 1 HRA, 2.63 ERA, 3.61 FIP
Ok, but nbot great start for Julio this week.

Emmanual Camacho Age 18, 11th week: Did not pitch
overall: 7.14 k/9, 5.58 BB/9, 2 HRA, 2.68 ERA, 4.34 FIP
He didn't pitch after his last poor outing.

Junior (AKA Yunior) Reyes Age 17, 10th week 2 IP, 0 GS, 3 K, 1 BB
overall 8.71 K/9, 7.84 BB/9, 2 HRA, 3.48 ERA, 5.10 FIP
A good releif outing this week.

Ofriedy Gomez Age 17, 10th 1 IP, 0 GS, 0 BB, 1K
overall 6.65 K/9, 5.40 BB/9, 0 HRA, 2.08 ERA, 4.22 FIP
A good outing this week hurt by an unearned run allowed.

I have not heard any news on how the Royals will spend the other $900K for IFA's. Smaykin Gonzalez is still available. Also, some players have yet to reach their 16th birthday.
