The ninth week of The Dominican Summer League is over. The DSL Royals went 3 and 3, 1 and 1/2 games behind the first place Red Sox.
Most of the 6 figure signing players I'm following have mostly stabilized lately. I don't see the star graduates similar to last year with Cristian Cano, Wander Franco, Brawlun Gomez, and top prospect Miguel Almonte. But, most likely Angelo Castellano and Emmanual Camacho will get promoted next year. Jose Martinez has a chance for promotion if his defense is good. The rest will probably start the year in the DSL again. However, quick promotion could follow if they start 2014 hot.
As a newbie to following the DSL, I find the profiles of who makes it from the DSL to be interesting.
The following players I will try keep track of this summer.
2011 signings: Emmanual Camacho (LHP) and Angelo Castellano (3B)
2012 signings: Julio Pinto (RHP), Alberto Saez (CF), Junior Reyes (LHP), Ofriedy Gomez (RHP), and Jose Martinez (SS)
Bonus DSL Royal of the Week Jose Torres, age 18 (C) He hit the second home-run of the year for the DSL Royals.
Jose Torres 7.5 BB%, 15.6 K%, 572 OPS, ISO 061, 76 wRC+
Now a look at the ninth week and overall stats. (I'm shifting to AB from PA since it is easier to keep track of weekly splits.)
Angelo Castellano Age 18, 9th week: AB 21, 4H, 2 2B, 1 BB, 2K, 2 SB, 0 CS, 3 RBI, 1 R
overall: BB% 11.1, K% 8.6, 688 OPS, ISO 047, 112 wRC+
The Walks and K %'s look good, more walks than strikeouts, but for an 18 year old 3B the lack of power is concerning.
Jose Martinez Age 16, 9th week AB 16, 2 H, 0 2B, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 RBI, 0 R
overall: BB% 5.2, K% 9.9, 633 OPS, ISO 081, 90 wRC+
The ISO looks good for a 16 year old SS. But the BB% is a concern.
Alberto Saez Age 16, 9th week AB 13, 3 H, 0 BB, 3K, 0 RBI, 2 R
overall: BB% 10.6, K% 20.4, 555 OPS, ISO 052, wRC+ 74
Considered Raw and a slow mover, he has fallen back after a hot streak that put his stats to average. Now he's 26% below average on limited playing time.
Second home-run of the year hit by the DSL Royals this week.
Julio Pinto Age 17, 9th week 4.1 IP, 1 GS, 5 K, 2 BB
overall 6.75 K/9, 4.14 BB/9, 1 HRA, 3.27 ERA, 3.76 FIP
Good strikeout game this week..
Emmanual Camacho Age 18, 9th week: 3 IP, 1 GS, 3 K, 0 BB
overall: 6.81 k/9, 4.54 BB/9, 2 HRA, 1.59 ERA, 4.08 FIP
Good peripherals this week, but 6 hits in 3 innings hurt the bottom line.
Junior (AKA Yunior) Reyes Age 17, 9th week 1 IP, 0 GS, 0 K, 2 BB
overall 8.13 K/9, 7.48 BB/9, 2 HRA, 2.93 ERA, 5.26 FIP
Nice K numbers, but the BB% is still too high.
Ofriedy Gomez Age 17, 9th 2.1 IP, 0 GS, 0 BB, 2K
overall 6.62 K/9, 5.60 BB/9, 0 HRA, 3.06 ERA, 4.11 FIP
Finally more K's than BB's for the year, but 6 hits and 2 ER hurt the bottom line.
I have not heard any news on how the Royals will spend the other $900K for IFA's. Smaykin Gonzalez is still available. Also, some players have yet to reach their 16th birthday.
Yohan Taveras,18, (RHP) assigned to the DSL Royals this week.
