Best Royals in the Post-Strike Era

Ezra Shaw

Between 1995 and 2013 (as of today), the Royals played 3,044 games. Assuming the Royals don't completely collapse in the next few months, the Royals will have had 2 winning seasons in that time. Awful. But consider that the Royals have lost 1,735 games in that time span. That's right, your Kansas City Royals have achieved a composite winning percentage of .430 over a span of two decades. Consistency.

As a break from the Wild Card wildness, and knowing this fact, I wondered who, in fact, were the best Royals in this time period. Perusing Fangraphs, I found the answers. Some are surprising. Some are not. Some are embarrassing.

Best Position Players in the Last Decade (2004-2013)

1. Alex Gordon, 3702 PA, 20 fWAR

2. David DeJesus, 3789 PA,19.1 fWAR

3. Billy Butler, 4158 PA, 9.8 fWAR

4. Salvador Perez, 945 PA, 7 fWAR

5. Mark Grudzielanek, 1432 PA, 6.7 fWAR

6. Emil Brown, 1607 PA, 5.1 fWAR

7. Alcides Escobar, 1851 PA, 5 fWAR

8. Mike Aviles, 1218 PA, 4.6 fWAR

9. Jarrod Dyson, 666 PA, 4.5 fWAR

10. Lorenzo Cain, 678 PA, 4.4 fWAR

Interesting. The Royals have been so bad in the past decade that three players with less than 1000 PA make the list, as well as other short-termers such as Mike Aviles, Emil Brown, and Grud appearing. However, Royals have a number of solid players, and have a propensity for producing good outfielders.

Best Pitchers of the Last Decade

1. Zack Greinke, 1108 IP, 25.9 fWAR

2. Gil Meche, 617 IP, 10.1 fWAR

3. Luke Hochevar, 836.2 IP, 9.8fWAR

4. Joakim Soria, 315.1 IP, 8.6fWAR

5. Greg Holland, 206.2 IP, 7 fWAR

6. Brian Bannister, 629.1 IP, 6.7 fWAR

7. Bruce Chen, 653.2 IP, 6.5 fWAR

8. Kyle Davies, 531 IP, 4.8 fWAR

9. James Shields, 213.2 IP, 4.2 fWAR

10. Felipe Paulino, 162.1 IP, 3.3 fWAR

Oh God make it stop. Shields and Paulino have one season of time. Holland and Soria are merely relievers. Bannister, Chen, Davies, and Hochevar all in the top 10 for the last decade? AGGGGHHHHH

Let's roll back the clock, further. To 1995 we go.

Best Position Players Since the Strike

1. Carlos Beltran, 3512 PA, 24.8 fWAR

2. Alex Gordon, 3702 PA, 20 fWAR

3. Mike Sweeney, 5278 PA, 20 fWAR

4. David Dejesus, 3799 PA, 19 fWAR

5. Joe Randa, 4158 PA, 13.1 fWAR

6. Johnny Damon, 3407 PA, 11.9 fWAR

7. Billy Butler, 4158 PA, 9.8 fWAR

8. Jose Offerman, 1825 PA, 8.1 fWAR

9. Jermaine Dye, 2275 PA, 7.8 fWAR

10. Salvador Perez, 945 PA, 7 fWAR

Salvador Perez impressing with the 10th place spot and almost 900 PA less than than the guy with the next-lowest PA, Offerman. Whom I don't know of at all. Seriously, I'm not sure I've ever heard his name before.

Best Pitchers Since the Strike

1. Zack Greinke, 1108 IP, 25.9 fWAR

2. Kevin Appier, 826.2 IP, 18.9 fWAR

3. Jose Rosado, 720.1 IP, 12 fWAR

4. Jeff Suppan, 864.2 IP, 10.8

5. Gil Meche, 617 IP, 10.1 fWAR

6. Luke Hochevar, 836.2 IP, 9.8fWAR

7. Joakim Soria, 315.1 IP, 8.6fWAR

8. Tim Belcher, 686 IP, 7.7 fWAR

9. Greg Holland, 206.2 IP, 7 fWAR

10. Brian Bannister, 629.1 IP, 6.7 fWAR

Well...Luke Hochevar, Brian Bannister are two of the Royals' best pitchers over the last 19 years. That explains a lot, doesn't it? Also, 19 seasons of baseball, and only one pitcher had over 1000 innings for the Royals, and no one else even had 900.

Conclusion:

  • Alex Gordon is awesome.
  • Perez and Holland are among the best of the young Royals and have cemented themselves as among the best with their performances. I'm eager to follow their careers.
  • Looking at other teams shows how few good players the Royals have had, especially well-run teams. Since 1995, Oakland has 7 position players who accumulated 10+ fWAR, 6 pitchers who did the same, had 3 1000+ inning pitchers, and none of them were relief pitchers.

Whew. Now, back to the Wild Card race!
