Andy McCullough reported today that Jason Vargas will undergo an appendectomy and won't return to Kansas City until Friday. His start Sunday against the Tigers has been scratched and he will be replaced by Bruce Chen. If the Royals were to have Vargas make the fifth start after the All-Star Break, he would start June 22, which isn't quite enough time to allow him to sit on the 15 day disabled list to call someone up in his place. Recovery from an appendectomy for baseball players typically takes 2-3 weeks.
Matt Holliday took 9 days to come back from an appendectomy. Adam Dunn 6 days. Vargas could be held back until July 22nd (13 days) but..

McCullough also reported Alex Gordon will undergo an MRI in Kansas City tomorrow after spraining his wrist on a slide in Cleveland. Yost says he is "worried" Alex Gordon will not be able to participate in the All-Star Game. It seems unlikely Gordon will be available for much, or all of the Detroit series.
Mike Moustakas is also battling the flu, and that is why he is out of tonight's ballgame, despite a right-handed pitcher on the mound. He may be vomiting, but he's out there having a blast.
All these freak occurrences and Nori Aoki was not even involved. Weird.
