Creative September call-ups, Part 2

Peter G. Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

Just to recap, I'm looking at creative ways the Royals can maximize their potential wins in September using the expanded roster in creative ways. Yesterday we looked at the possibility of seeing what more speed could do in the person of Terrance Gore.

Today we have to look at adding some power bats.

The trade for Josh Willingham brought back a righty power bat. Ibanez is on the roster as a lefty power bat. I use those terms loosely. Nonetheless, if the situation becomes bleak and you need some HR power, you have to get it from somewhere.

Thankfully the Storm Chasers happen to have another righty and another lefty with some pop. Matt Fields has clubbed 22 HR this year and 153 in his minor league career over 10 seasons. In addition, he's smacked 27 doubles this year. His career slugging percentage is .455. This year he's at .506. Carlos Peguero is a lefty outfielder that has smashed 20 HR this year and 13 doubles. His SLG is .508. Peguero has also homered 9 times in the majors in 219 PA (1 HR every 24.3 PA).

If the Royals need a big bat, they can call up both Peguero and Fields. As discussed yesterday, you would use these guys only when in need of a HR or XBH. You would not use these guys in a situation that called for a contact hitter, as both Peguero and Fields strike out more than a quarter of the time. Of course, these call ups would, as with Gore, require that Ned Yost understand their specific utility. He has not demonstrated that understanding in his time as a manager. If the Royals were to make that move, they would have to do so with assurances that Yost would know how to utilize the tools that he was given.

Basically, if you were to bring up Fields and Peguero as a package (and it absolutely would be a package so you would have both a lefty and a righty) you would also need to handcuff them to a pinch runner/ defensive sub player, as they are both below average base runners and fielders. You would essentially need to call up (or have on the bench) another player or two to pinch run and play the field for them. A player like Terrance Gore would be terrific insurance for either of these two as a runner, but if you were to bat them for some of the non-power bats (Aoki, Escobar, Dyson) you would also be weakening the defense unless you had a sub.

There are still pitching options and a crazy idea or two out there to cover this week.
