Blue October: A Creative Summary of the Greatest Month of Our Lives

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

I wrote this poem as a class assignment a few months after the World Series, and I just now decided to share it.

My life revolves around Royals baseball
I follow the team from Spring through Fall
Every series, every game, every strike, every ball
My life revolves around Royals baseball

Opening Day through World Series Game five
At my house, at school, or at the game live
Inning after inning I watch the squad thrive
I’ve been waiting since November for April to arrive.

The Royals made KC a city united;
Across the 816, a passion ignited.
As fans, we gave unrelinquished support;
We watched them beat Houston, the Jays and New York

The Astros gave the Royals their toughest test,
Nearly beating the Royals in the ALDS.
But hit after hit, hack after hack;
Down but not out, the Royals fought back

The Royals were down by 4 in the 8th,
A single by Rios seemed too little, too late.
Then Esky and Zobrist and Cain followed suit
A stunning comeback put the ‘Stros crowd on mute.

The team took a lead they would not surrender;
an epic comeback completed, one to remember.
So the series moved back to KC for Game 5,
Both teams fighting to keep their World Series dreams alive.

The Royals won swiftly with Cueto on the hill
After Johnny pitched 8 innings, Davis came in for the kill.
Yet they could only celebrate briefly, they had to move pronto;
The ALCS was next, they had a date with Toronto.

Toronto’s high power offense was no match for KC,
They didn't tally a win until series Game 3.
The Royals pitching was fine, and their offense was hot.
Up 3-1 after 4, they were in a great spot.

Yet they stumbled game 5, and allowed Toronto a win;
The margin for error became paper thin.
Series game 6 went down to the wire;
But Cain’s blazing dash set KC on fire.

Advancing 3 bases on a single by Hoz,
Cain raced home as Kauffman roared with applause.
Wade Davis came on, and allowed some hits late.
With 2 runners on, the MVP stept to the plate.

The MVP grounded to 3rd as Moose made the throw;
The Royals won, and to the Fall Classic they'd go.
They were on the verge of fulfilling their dreams;
The Royals aimed to be the team of all teams.

In 2014 the Royals fell just short;
It couldn't happen again, they moved on to New York.
This Series started the same as the last;
The Royals struck early, often, and fast.

Esky started the game with a lead off home run;
After a pitch the Royals led by one.
Eight innings later they weren't down by much,
But they needed a hero, they needed some clutch.

Alex Gordon stepped up facing Familia, an excellent pitcher;
His fastball was fast, but Gordo’s bat was quicker.
He jumped on a pitch and sent the ball over the fencing;
The game was tied up, we moved to the 10th inning.

An extra innings game meant a call to the pen;
It took 5 more innings for the Royals to win.
Game 2 came and went with the same result as Game one;
The Royals had 2 wins, and the Mets still had none.

Game 3 started with a pitch high and tight.
The Royals were mad, and ready to fight.
Throughout the game, the team's pitching was pounded.
The sky high Royals were finally grounded.

The Mets faltered again in Game 4 as they lost the lead late;
The Royals plated 3 runs in the inning number eight.
Night after Night the team kept improving;
Hit after hit they kept the line moving.

The Royals had a knack for coming back late;
Knock after knock they pushed runs ‘cross the plate.
That's why in Game 5 there was no shock or surprise;
Down by 2 runs late, KC started to rise.

They battled and hacked to tie up the game;
The score remained tied until the 12th frame.
Christian Colon knocked the tie breaking hit,
Yet one run wouldn't do it, the team wouldn't quit.

The Royals ended up scoring 5 in that frame;
The Mets knew it was over, they lost the game.
We watched the Royals drive in run after run;
Davis closed out the game. They did it! They won!

This team gave us all memories we will never forget;
2015: the year we beat the Mets.
We cheered and we cried and we screamed and we "yayed";
All eight hundred thousand of us who watched the parade.

A city United, we all came together;
After seasons of losing we all had to weather.
After 30 years of unrewarding loyalty,
Our team from KC gave us baseball Royalty.

And unlike those fans who only watched in the fall,
My life revolves around Royals baseball.
