Game 98 Open Thread- Yankees (51-46) at Royals (43-54)

Consider this the most anticipatory game thread ever posted in the history of the internet. While, I feel absolutely dreadful about this, but theres no way around it, since I'll be hopping from St. Martin to Puerto Rico to Texas Monday. Not a good setup for being online, especially after double-checking to verify that, yes, the airport in San Juan (where I'll be for an eternity) is still stuck in 1985.

So here we are.

After a fantastic road trip the Royals are now dead tied with the White Sox for fourth place in the division, an alternatively meaningless and fascinating occurrence. As I mentioned over the weekend, theres no real way of predicting how the rest of the season will go; arguably worse Royal teams than this one have finished strong, and some fairly OK teams have completely cratered over the final two months. No matter what, its amazing that we're even having a discussion of who'll end up with more victories, the Royals or the 2005 World Champs.

Tonight, not only do the hated Yankees come to town, but also Roger Clemens (2-4, 3.88 ERA). Clemens hasn't pitched against the Royals since June 17th, 2005, a 7-0 Astros win.

The Royals counter with Odalis Perez (5-8, 5.84 ERA), which seems bad, until you consider that Scott Elarton is pitching Tuesday. Unstoppable baby!

Great work on the diaries y'all, tons of good stuff there.

"No matter what, its amazing that we're even having a discussion of who'll end up with more victories, the Royals or the 2005 World Champs." ~Or the 2006 World Champs. And I'm still outraged at the Scott Elarton decision.

Check out
Ruben Gotay!  He's got regular playing time since Valentin's hurt and he's hit .336/366/.495 in a little over 100 AB's.  It's a small sample size, but giving him away for 2 months of Jeff Keppinger's career is looking like a stupid trade.

by lordbyronk on Jul 23, 2007 10:32 AM EDT reply actions

We got little from that trade, but...
I really don't think Gotay is better than a handful of guys we have in the minors.  First, those are NL numbers.  Second, he won't be able to replicate that in future seasons.  He's having a nice little stretch of decent mostly part-time play.  And it's not like the Mets are too impressed with him.  With Valentin down, they aren't content with Gotay at 2B; they're looking to trade for a 2B.

Zook's Spur.... back in the coal mining
days was quite the place.  It sported two hotels, a bank, and about 500 people.  Oh ya, ten bars.  Those drunken illegal immigrants from Italy, Ireland, and Germany were all over the place.  We are on some maps but not all and we stopped being an incorporated town in the 50's.  I think that is right.   The closest towns would be Madrid or Sheldahl.  There is a burning ban on right now at the county level so unless we get rain the burn pile will just set there until winter.

I love weather sites and that was a good one.

Odie vs. Yankee lineup = not good. Boom Boom and Gordo are going to show Roidger Clemens that this is a young man's game. Lastly, did I mention that I hate Derek Jeter. Curse this schedule
Why couldn't we get the BAD Yankees?

Anyone want to predict which game/inning A-Rod hits # 500? I'm guessing Scott Elarton gives it up in the first or second inning Tuesday night.

Reason for hope: we swept the Yankees for Buddy Bell's first series as manager in 2005. Buddy's still here. Mike Sweeney is still on the payroll. We can make this magic happen again!

(Are Grienke, Gobble, Buck, DeJesus and Teahen the only ones on the 25-man roster who were also on it when Buddy took the reins? That's some turnover!)

...is Yankee fans.  I've been to Kauffman Stadium several times for Royals-Yankee games and it always disgusts me how many bandwagon-jumping Yankee fans are in attendance.  Their baseball ignorance and joiner tendancies sicken me.

Unfortunatley, it is no better at Yankee Stadium.  There it is still mostly bandwagon jumpers who don't know a thing about the game.  They just get behind the winners of the moment and look down their nose at just about every other team, particularly any team in fly-over country.  But, I'll be there at the heart of the Evil Empire Aug. 4, proudly wearing Royal Blue.

I never understood that
"beat the traffic" thing.  Because if you stay for the entire game and then don't run to your car most of the traffic is gone and it is all due to the people who leave early to beat the traffic.  The last game I went to two rows around us completely cleared out during the 7th inning.   They also stop selling beer at the end of the 7th too.  Maybe their is a correlation there.

I was at that fateful 'Stros v. Royals game in 05
it was abysmally sad. But this game will go better, I am sure of it. I hate Clemens, and I already have heated debate going with my campers about the Royals and whether or not they'll win. ("Don't worry, Laura," they say..."I won't make fun of you when the Yankees win"...to which I respond "Don't worry, I won't laugh at you when the Royals beat the Yanks")

The boys in blue better come through for me, that's all I've got to say. Otherwise, I think I might cry a little bit on the inside.

So my good and loyal fellow Royals fanatics, I leave you with the wise words of Red:

The remainder of the Royals season . . .
We need only go 57-8 to win 100 games . . .

We need only go 47-18 to win 90 games . . .

We need only go 39-26 to win 82 games . . .

Maybe the first 2 are unattainable, maybe . . .

But the last one - which would have the Royals finish 82-80, is a solid goal.

It would require the Royals to go 5-4 in their 9 remaining games in July, and 17-11 in their 28 games in August, and 17-11 in their 28 games in September (assuming no rain-outs).

Can we do it???????????

The good news
...is that the core of this good, young team will be around for many years.  Gordon, Butler, Teahen, DeJesus, Buck, German, Pena, Meche, Bannister, Soria, and Greinke are a very good core.  That means the good play we've seen since mid-May should be just the start of good things to come.

Buster Olney article on ESPN.com
Buster Olney has an article on the improving KC Royals on ESPN.com's MLB page.  But it is an "ESPN Insider" article available to subscribers only.  Is anyone here a subscriber?  Could you cut-and-paste it?  It might be an interesting read.

by Scott McKinney on Jul 23, 2007 6:30 PM EDT reply actions

B. Olney Blog
The Royals are still miles away from where they want to be, but they are moving ahead, bit by bit. "Brick by brick," as general manager Dayton Moore said on Sunday. The Royals went into Detroit for three days and won two games, and if you've seen the Tigers play in the last month, you know this is no small feat.

The Royals started their season 21-38, but have won 22 of their 38 games since then, climbing into a tie with the White Sox at the bottom of the AL Central. Billy Butler has moved into the middle of their lineup and is doing what injuries prevented Mike Sweeney from doing the last few years, giving the Royals a steady run producer. The bullpen has improved dramatically, Gil Meche has earned every bit of his salary, the lineup is deepening.

So Moore has a difficult quandary on his hands this week. The Royals have several of the most marketable players available in what is a poor trade market -- closer Octavio Dotel, veteran outfielder Reggie Sanders (who is 3-for-11 since coming off the disabled list), and second baseman Mark Grudzielanek, he of the .300 batting average.

For the organization that has had one winning season since 1993, and hasn't appeared in the playoffs in more than two decades, it would mean a lot for the Royals to show progress in the standings. It would mean a lot for Kansas City to approach .500, to finish ahead of the White Sox in the standings. It would mean a lot to the players. You could make an argument that Moore should keep his team together and continue to try to win.

But it would also help the Royals, moving forward, to get better players, to improve the team for future seasons, to get good young prospects in return for Dotel, for Sanders, for Grudzielanek.

"We've got to find a balance," said Moore. "We've got to be open-minded about getting any player -- or players -- back [in trades] that we feel can help us long term.

"But we've got to learn to win, too, and we've been saying that since Day 1. ... The only way you learn how to win is by being in games late."

And as the bullpen has improved, with Joakim Soria and Zack Greinke working in middle relief and Dotel serving as the closer, Kansas City has been involved in more games decided in the late innings -- an opportunity for hitters to have at-bats with the Royals just ahead, or maybe a run behind, or with the score tied. "Those situations require a higher level of concentration," Moore said, "and the hitters are getting a chance to be in those situations."

But Moore must think big-picture. "And if we can get pieces [in a trade] that can help us win a championship, that's important," he said.

So it may be that in the next eight days, Moore will trade Dotel, who has been pitching in the lower half of the strike zone more than he did in his days as a closer with the Astros and Athletics; this has helped him improve his performance against left-handed hitters. In the past, lefties hammered the right-handed Dotel, especially for power, but this year, lefties and righties have an identical .378 slugging percentage against him.

The Red Sox are considering adding Sanders or Oakland's Bobby Kielty and dumping Wily Mo Pena, and while the Royals might not get a good prospect for Sanders, they might save some money.

Grudzielanek might make sense for a team like the Mets, in the aftermath of Jose Valentin's devastating injury, but Moore would have a difficult decision: Grudzielanek has been the leader of the Royals, a veteran who has been an immense help to Tony Pena Jr. And once Grudzielanek hits 500 plate appearances, his $4 million option for 2008 vests, a nice deal for the second baseman, a good short-term contract for a productive player on the Royals.

Kansas City may have to be overwhelmed to deal Grudzielanek, because he has been an essential part of the turnaround that has begun to take place with the Royals.

Moore was in the middle of a long-distance run as he talked, his words coming haltingly between breaths. He and the Royals have miles to go, a journey that will help define the moves he makes, or does not make, in the next eight days.

Sunday's victory was a statement win for the Royals, who took the series from the Tigers. Mark Grudzielanek has been raking.

thanks for the post
It's an interesting predicament: who do you trade if you make any trades at all?

I think you have to trade Dotel, and the fact that the Dodgers used a starter in relief yesterday, sure seems helpful. If you can get anything for Sanders, take it too. As for Grudz (and for that matter, Greinke), I would agree with Olney: Time to be overwhelmed. Especially with the option that Grudz has coming (I'm assuming he can and will trigger it). Personally, I don't think there is a single untouchable on our team (Gordon, Boom Boom and Meche would be the closest) but there are lot of players who can obviously play, so you have to get something back that can help. I really only see Dotel and Sanders going, and I'd be fine with that. If they don't, and we keep playing the way we are, that wouldn't be the worst thing in the world either.

To quote a crazy politician: "There's nothing better then winning is there?!! Whoo!"

45 minutes to go, and I can't wait. Let's go blue!

Sorry I'll have to miss it...
tonight as I'm on vacation and we're about to go out to dinner, but I'll definitely be there in spirit.

Two of the seminal moments of my life were 1. KU's victory over Arkansas in the 1991 tournament, and 2. Brett's homer off of Gossage in 1980.

I hate everything about the Yankees and their fans. I wish them 95 years of ineptitude once A-Rod leaves.

I think as far as DFA (my new nickname for Elarton), my prediction is they're giving him one more shot and then they're going to release him. However, even if he stays, I'd rather have him in there than bringing up one of the young'uns at this point. Our problem in the past was the constant dickering back and forth between a youth movement and winning a few more games. We do not need to rush some young prospects in order to win a couple more games. I'd rather sign Joel Pinata than bring up Buckner or Hochevar at this point.

Go Royals and I'll try and check back before it's too late!

I bet my friend sort of offhandedly 10 bucks to pick up Scott Elarton and start him in fantasy in his double start this week.

He actually took the bet and I really don't think he knows what he is in for. The stats really don't tell the whole story.

WATCHING SCOTTY GROW
(Mac Davis)

Bobby Goldsboro - 1971
O.C. Smith - 1971
Mac Davis - 1972

Also recorded by: Ray Conniff; Tony Mottola.

There he sits with a pen and a yellow pad
He's a handsome lad
That's my boy

B-R-L-F-Q spells Mom and Dad
That ain't too bad
That's my boy

You can have your TV and your nightclubs
You can have your drive-in picture shows
I'll sit here with my little man near, we'll listen to the radio
Bidin' my time and and watching Scotty grow

Makin' castles out of building blocks
And a cardboard box
That's my boy

Mickey Mouse says it's thirteen o'clock
Well, that's quite a shock
But that's my boy

In four short years I've gone from rags to riches
But what I did before that I don't know
Well you can let it rain on my windowpane, I got my own rainbow
And we're just sittin' here shinin' watching Scotty grow

Up on daddy's shoulders and off to bed
Old sleepy head
That's my boy

Got to have a drink of water and a story read
An old teddy bear named Fred
That's my boy

Well, what's that your say Momma, come on and keep your feet warm
Well save me a place, I'll be there in a minute or so
I'll think I'll stay right here and say a little prayer before I go
'Cause me and God are watching Scotty grow
Me and God watching are Scotty grow

If we don't win
I would at least like to get some meaningless runs this half inning.  Maybe even get Rivera into the game.

game over.
it was a much closer game than the score will make it appear to be. ESPN will act like the game was an absolute blowup, proof that they simply look at the scores...

Above average start for Odie
I can't say that it was that bad of a game. Obviously the ending stank, but some positives:

Bullpen should be rested
Butler will hit tomorrow
alright I'm out of positives.

I thought that the Yankee rotation was struggling this year?
