I know there was speculation here that the Royals could get Hardy cheap, and it seems like they both got a good trade here. JJ was done in Milwaukee with Alcides Escobar taking over at SS, and Gomez looks like a 4th OFer with speed that the Brewers are more able to take advantage of in the NL.

I wish the Royals had Gomez and Hardy.

If you limit the Yankees Major League payroll from $200M to $100M (or whatever) without imposing a cap on the amount of money a team can spend on amateur and baseball operations talent, then really you aren’t helping anyone but the Yankees.

Why? Because if you knock that $50M off the Yankees payroll, that doesn’t mean they cannot spend it; instead, it simply means they must reallocate it to another part of the game. Now they can really go over-slot on a consistent basis. Or, if a hard-slotting system is imposed, they can reap the international talent market like none other. Not to mention the amount of front office talent they can add to the fold — ranging from scouts to quantitative analysis guys to medical staff and so on.

Living off free agency is usually a poor habit to fall into, because when signing a 30 – 32-year-old player, teams are paying for his past performances more than his future performances. By eliminating that practice for the Yankees, they can quickly develop the best farm system, player development, and front office staffs around and still have money to burn.

Crow, who went back into the draft, and ended up with the Royals, was the only one of the three pitchers to appear in this afternoon's extra inning affair, but his day ended early after just 3.1 IP in which the soon-to-be 23-year-old right-hander allowed 6 hits, 4 ER and 1 walk while recording 2 K's and throwing 56 pitches, 42 for strikes. Back-to-back singles followed by back-to-back sacs (a sac bunt and a sac fly) resulted in the D-Dogs' first run off Crow in the second, and a misplayed fly ball in center that wasn't ruled an error let Nationals' SS prospect Danny Espinosa on in the third and resulted in Phoenix's second run of the game when a groundout and an RBI single brought Espinosa around. In the fourth, Crow issued a leadoff walk and then gave up a run scoring triple and a sac fly before being removed with the Rafters down 4-2..

World Series Notes: 2 WTF moments and 1 Royals Record about to fall

Cole Hamels after a game he was roughed up says "I can't wait for it to end." The getting roughed up part, or the World Series? WTF?

Derek Jeter just won the AL's Hank Aaron Award? Best offensive player doesn't go to the man that lead the AL in Batting Average, OBP, and Slugging? And if you voted Mauer for MVP, your tiny brain can't comprehend that he might actually deserve both awards? Seriously? WTF?

Finally, Willie Wilson's strikeouts in a World Series record is about to fall thanks to Missouri native Ryan Howard. Howard needs just 3 more to tie Willie. If the Phillies can push the series to a game 6, he's got a shot. If there is a Game 7, surely Howard will break it.

The Atlanta Braves will likely try to unload Javier Vazquez this winter for a quality bat.

What a shame the Royals don't have a quality bat.

Greinke / Vazquez - nice - the Royals would lead the AL in K's at the plate and the mound!!!!

collins (greenville nc): People seem to think Greinke will win the Cy this year, which seems to indicate that the voters are getting more sophisticated. Do you think the same is happening with the HOF? (I wonder if 3000 hits will continue to be automatic HOF, if the writers get smarter.)

Jay Jaffe: Incrementally more sophisticated, and in Greinke's case I think it owes a lot to the work of Joe Posnanski, who for my money is the best sportswriter in America and one of the most widely read and respected. As a KC-based writer, he's covered Greinke during his entire career, and as somebody who does a very nice job of explaining the stathead side of things to a wide audience, he certainly did a great job of drawing attention to the facets of Greinke's great season even when the win total looked unimpressive.
