Recap: San Diego vs. Los Angeles

Sports Network | September 11, 2008

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Manny Ramirez hit two home runs and drove in four as Los Angeles rocked San Diego, 7-2, in the rubber match of a three-game set.

James Loney also homered for the Dodgers, who took two of three in the series and have won 10 of their last 11. Coupled with Arizona's loss to the Giants earlier Wednesday, Los Angeles moved 3 1/2 games in front of the D-Backs in the NL West.

Blake DeWitt and Russell Martin also added RBI in the victory.

Derek Lowe (13-11) was solid for the win, scattering three hits and a run over 5 1/3 innings.

Kevin Kouzmanoff knocked in a run for the Padres, who have dropped two in a row and four of six. San Diego starter Shawn Estes (2-2) took the loss after yielding six hits and five runs over five innings along with two home runs.

San Diego hit the scoreboard in the first on Kouzmanoff's run-scoring groundout. Brian Giles began the frame with a double and went to third on a groundout before scoring.

Los Angeles countered with three in the second on Loney's solo home run, a DeWitt RBI double and an RBI single from Martin.

A two-run homer from Ramirez in the fifth pushed LA's lead to 5-1. Brad Penny began the seventh inning for the Dodgers but allowed a walk and a pair of hits, which eventually led to a Drew Macias sacrifice fly off Cory Wade for a 5-2 game.

Ramirez struck for another two-run blast in the ninth, and Joe Beimel retired the side in order in the Padres' turn to finish the game.

Los Angeles has won nine of the 15 meetings this season, including five of the last six...Prior to the game, the Dodgers activated Penny off the 15-day disabled list. Penny pitched to three batters without recording an out and was charged with two hits and one run...For Ramirez, it was his second multi-homer game of the season and the 52nd in his storied career.
