Recap: San Diego vs. San Francisco

Sports Network | September 13, 2008

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Sanchez won for the first time since June 29 and the Giants roughed up Padres ace Jake Peavy in a 5-2 win, the second contest of a four-game series from PETCO Park.

Sanchez (9-10) was charged with two runs and six hits while striking out six and walking a pair of batters over six-plus frames. Pablo Sandoval and Travis Ishikawa each hit a solo home run and scored twice for the Giants, who bounced back from a loss Thursday to record their sixth win in seven games.

Peavy (9-11) is now winless in his last five starts thanks in large part to a lack of run support from his fellow Pads. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner had allowed three runs over his last three starts coming in, but was touched for five runs and 11 hits while issuing two walks and setting down three on strikes in the loss, San Diego's third in its last four games.

"The run support hasn't been there," Padres manager Bud Black said.

Ishikawa put San Francisco on top 3-2 in the sixth with a solo shot to right and the Giants went on to add a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. With the bases loaded and one away, Eugenio Velez plated a run with a groundout and Omar Vizquel singled back through the middle to make it a 5-2 game.

Brian Wilson allowed a base-hit and a walk in the ninth but recovered to notch his 38th save of the season.

The Giants took a 2-0 lead into the home half of the fifth. Sandoval led off the fourth with a home run to right-center and Randy Winn came through with an RBI single one inning later, but Adrian Gonzalez tied the game, 2-2, with a two-run homer over the wall in left.

"I tried to get my pitch, he (Peavy) made a mistake and left the ball up," Sandoval said of his home run.

San Francisco leads the season series 10-5 while holding a 4-2 mark in San Diego...The Padres sent pitcher Brian Fallen outright to Triple-A Portland Friday and announced that pitchers Scott Patterson and Charlie Haeger have reported to the big league club. San Diego claimed Patterson off waivers from the New York Yankees Friday and Haeger off waivers from the Chicago White Sox...Peavy had a streak of 19 consecutive quality starts at home snapped...Padres center fielder Chip Ambres left the game prior to the fifth after spraining his left knee running to first. Will Venable took over in center.
