Recap: Texas vs. Detroit

Sports Network | September 16, 2008

Arlington, TX (Sports Network) - Chris Davis hit the game-winning single in the ninth to finish off a Rangers' 5-4 comeback victory over the Tigers, in the middle contest of a three-game set.

Marlon Byrd hit a game-tying two-run triple in the ninth, and Josh Hamilton went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Rangers, who have won four of six.

Kevin Millwood allowed four runs on five hits and two walks in seven innings, with six strikeouts. Jamey Wright (7-6) pitched a scoreless ninth to notch the win.

Zach Miner didn't factor into the decision, but gave up just two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out three. Fernando Rodney (0-6) got the loss after blowing the save, giving up three runs and three hits in the ninth without recording an out.

Brandon Inge hit an RBI single and also scored a run while Miguel Cabrera added an RBI, as the Tigers saw their losing streak extended to six.

Rodney entered in the ninth to close it out but ran into trouble immediately. Michael Young walked and Hamilton singled to start the inning and Byrd followed with a two-run triple to the corner in right to tie the game. Rodney then intentionally walked the bases loaded, and Davis lined a single to the gap in left-center to end the game.

Detroit got on the board in the first. Curtis Granderson walked and Placido Polanco singled him to second. A double play left a runner on third with two outs, and Cabrera ripped an RBI single to plate Granderson for a 1-0 lead.

Texas tied it up in the third. Davis hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a groundout and to third on an infield single. Brandon Boggs drove him home with a sacrifice fly to knot the game at one.

Hamilton singled to start the fourth and Hank Blalock singled one out later to put men on the corners for Nelson Cruz, who plated a run with a single to left.

The Tigers then moved in front in the seventh. With runners on first and second and two outs, Inge hit an RBI single to center, and a second run came home on Byrd's throwing error. Dusty Ryan followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2 in favor of Detroit.

Despite the loss, Detroit leads the season series 5-3...Miner is 5-1 since being added to the rotation July 21...Wednesday's scheduled starters are Freddy Garcia (0-0) for Detroit and Dustin Nippert (3-4) for Texas.
