Recap: Cleveland vs. Detroit

Sports Network | September 19, 2008

Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Jamey Carroll hit the game-winning RBI single in the ninth to give the Cleveland Indians a comeback 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the first of a three-game set.

Freddy Dolsi (1-5) started on the mound for Detroit in the ninth and hit lead- off batter Kelly Shoppach. Bobby Seay came on in relief and Josh Barfield came in to pinch-run. After a strikeout, Gary Glover relieved Seay and gave up a single to Ryan Garko to put runners on the corners. Carroll followed with a hit over the head of right fielder Magglio Ordonez, allowing the game-winning run to score.

Shin-Soo Choo hit two homers, including a game-tying three-run shot in the eighth, and Grady Sizemore added a home run as the Indians won their fourth straight.

Fausto Carmona allowed four runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings before being ejected, and also fanned five. Rafael Perez (4-3) got the win after getting the final out in the ninth inning.

Miguel Cabrera homered twice and drove in four runs for the Tigers, who have lost seven of eight.

Armando Galarraga threw 7 2/3 strong innings, giving up only three runs on four hits while striking out five.

Choo got the Indians on the board in the first, hitting his 12th homer of the season with two outs for a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers took the lead in the fourth. Curtis Granderson started the inning with a double and scored on Cabrera's two-run homer to left. However, Cleveland tied the game up in the sixth on Sizemore's 33rd home run, extending his career-high.

Cabrera put Detroit in front once again in the seventh, hitting his second home run of the game -- another two-run shot -- for a 4-2 lead.

Dusty Ryan added a sacrifice fly for the Tigers in the eighth to stretch the lead to three. But Choo capped an eighth-inning rally for Cleveland with a two-out three-run homer off Casey Fossum, tying the game at five.

The Indians lead the season series 9-7...Tigers manager Jim Leyland will miss the weekend series against the Indians after being suspended for three games and fined an undisclosed amount for his actions Monday and Tuesday against the Rangers...Both benches cleared in the seventh after an altercation between Carmona and Tigers designated hitter Gary Sheffield.
