New Lines

By my reckoning, we're now approximately halfway through the four month holiday season, an annual punishment which runs roughly from mid-November to Valentine's Day. Somewhere between my 2,000th jewelry ad and the Christmas Afternoon "see you at the mall tomorrow" type proddings I simply gave up any semblance of feigning cheer. Amazingly, the radio ads for slavery/murder/lawlessnes-fueled diamonds were even more insulting, as one featured a random three-fourth's reading of Byron's "She Walks in Beauty" followed by the line, (I'm broadly remembering, this isn't 100% accurate) "thats how Lord Byron said 'I love you' you can say it this Christmas without words at all with a diamond...". There was also a version of this ad which ripped off Browning and I'm sure multiple other public-domain accesible poets.

Bear in mind, this isn't some lefty writer saying we've devalued human expression to comsumer exchange, thats the actual sales-pitch!!. The ad uses poetry to tell you you needn't express yourself at all... A line of argument no different than the daily spam emails I get selling less socially acceptable wares with subject lines like "she will love you more than any other guy!"

And so it goes.

The Holidays: Will They Ever End?

But returning to our beloved Royals, I was especially heartened in these insane times to see that the official site has posted their version of the 2006 Year in Review. Once again, Dick Kaegel gets the job done. Its a bit different than the RR version, in that Kaegel goes month by month, including the memorable "Runelyvs is fat and Greinke has mysterious issues" February, a 28 day epoch which will redound in the depths of my soul for years to come.

Despite the ghostly hand of nostalgia, it is important to remember that actual changes have been made. Just consider the current pitching staff as we sit right now:

Current Royals Pitching Staff:

Starters:

1. Gilgamesh
2. Odalis Perez
3. Luke Hudson
4. A guy Dayton irrationally likes (J. de la R)
5. Greinke
6. Elarton (for now)
7. Bannister
8. Day

Bullpeners:

Noble Closer who possesses inscrutable qualities only given to those special few (Dotel)
Wellemeyer
Gobble
Peralta
Braun
Ray
Nunez
Wright
Bale
Riske
Nelson

And I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

On the other side of the ball its been frustratingly boring: no long-dreamed of Sweeney trade nor Berroa cuttation nor even a prospect swap involving persona non grata Justin Huber. Just Ross Gload and Jason LaRue, which seems like a lazy boyfriend Christmas gift to me.

To that end, the question then becomes, are there any yet undiscovered gifts left waiting under the tree?

Did you see this?
Johnny Damon started a video game league in the offseason for major league players.  Luke Hochevar is the only Royal mentioned in the article.  Do we really want our top draft pick getting wrist injuries playing guitar II on ps2?

At least two more additions
Two more additions/moves likely before pitchers and catchers report Feb. 16 [50 days!]

It will be surprising if we don't pick up Joel Pineiro.  He perfectly fits the model GMDM has been looking for.

(1)  He's the right age---28 [Perez 29; Meche 28].

(2)  He has been very successful for extended periods before but has recently been inexplicably awful.

Perez remember pitched 222.1 innings in '02 with a sparkling 3.00 ERA.  In '04 he was almost as good with 196.1 IP and a 3.26 ERA.

Similarly, Pineiro threw 194.1 innings in '02 with a 3.24 ERA [AL] and 211.2 with a 3.78 in '03.

Neither has suffered a significant injury.

There's a reason Perez was due $8.75 million last year and Pineiro $6.8 million.

(3)  He'll be cheap

We're getting Perez for under two mil [Dodgers pick up the rest] and can likely get Pineiro for the same since he was non-tendered by Seattle.

No obvious physical reason either or both of these guys couldn't return to something approximating their former levels which would make them among the best bargains in baseball potentially.

Additionally, somebody is going to give us something for Reggie Sanders.  Take a club like Cincinatti where Sanders first blossomed.  They have legitimate postseason aspirations and need a right handed bat to go between Dunn and Griffey.  Right now they have journeyman Scott Hatteberg playing first and Griffey probably won't be ready for Opening Day [broken hand].

They can move Freel to center until Griffey gets back and put Sanders in right.  When Griffey's healthy, Freel goes back to the corner OF and Dunn moves to first with Hatteberg on the bench.

Probably a prospect trade, but we'll get something for Sanders.  A 39 year old outfielder making over $5 mil. does not fit in our 2007 plans.

I look for
a trade of either Brown or Sanders, but perhaps not until sometime near the end of spring training. Perhaps an injury or two will spur some team to take a flyer on Sanders if we are lucky. In addition, this would give GMDM time to decide if Gordon is indeed ready to start the season in KC instead of Omaha, thus moving Teahen to the OF and making one or both of the above expendable.

I have to admit I'm pretty disappointed GMDM did not address the SS situation, and apparently does not intend to (?).

Also must say
I'm glad to see somebody hating on the holiday season more than me! (I like seeing family and all, but the crass commercialism is simply disgusting).

Off subject...
Great interview at baseballthinkfactory.com of Bob Dutton, KCStar Royals beat writer (thanks to Royals Authority for the find):
http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/files/royals/discussion/turning_the_tables_on_an_mlb_beat_writer /

Included is this, which has to be the most revealing tidbit regarding Huber thus far...

GS: Now moving to some Royals-specific stuff. Talk about Justin Huber's future, with the team and in the league.

BD: Justin Huber is a great kid who you'd love to see succeed. But his switch to first base was a disaster, which prompted a switch to the outfield. That hasn't gone well either.

There is thought of moving him back to catcher. That's probably his best position, but there were reasons why he was moved to first. He lacks the power desired in a corner position and lacks the speed to compensate for it.

He won the Texas League batting title in 2005 at Wichita, but his swing still has a small hitch that instructors have been unable to fix. Bottom line: It's hard to see where he fits.

Jorge De La Rosa
Why on earth are we even thinking about this bum being in our rotation. If he lights up the league next year I may be ridiculed for this post, but if he lights up the league I'll be in a coma anyway. This guy has bounced around from team to team and sucked at all of them. Every time I see a mock KC rotation, he's in there and that drives me nuts. Here's what I'd like to see on April 4th:
  1. Meche
  2. Perez
  3. Pineiro (if he signs)
  4. Hudson
  5. Bannister
Greinke, Brazelton and Wright can try and earn a spot, but this rotation looks fairly solid. De La Rosa may be a bullpen option if Jimmy Gobble gets traded.

Nice reference
To lord byron.  I tend to agree Jorge De La Rosa is ludicrous as a starting pitcher, but if he can get his control issues under control might not make a bad setup guy.  I like the rotation and I think it will be better than it has been in a long time.  I also think Greinke is a part of it.

I almost forgot
Why can't we just re-sign Mark Redman. The guy's solid and would be a good No. 3 or 4 in this rotatation and his numbers last year were much better than Pineiro's. Just a thought. He can't be that damn expensive.

Delarosa is there because he's the one
guy in that 5 that has shown overpowering stuff at times, if not command. He's the prototypical high upside guy who is running out of time to prove it. But if you want Redman or Pinero, compare Delarosa's numbers last year, they're much better. By the numbers only Hudson was a better starter for us last year.

He's very entertaining to watch when he's got his curveball going. Assuming he has a decent spring, I hope he gets several starts to prove himself. He certainly has more potential than the Baird crew of Affeldt/Runny/Bautista ever did.

by chukar on Dec 30, 2006 10:19 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

By the way, he was a league average #4 starter
last year by ERA (5.1). Number 5's posted a 6.2, so if you want to view him as our #5 he was well ahead of league average, although essentially anyone can fill the five slot. Problem is we have too many #4 types.

by chukar on Dec 30, 2006 10:49 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree with chukar
De la Rosa has incredible potential, so with our team I would rather have him in our rotation than redman. pineiro would be OK because he is only 28 and still able to regain his past #3 numbers, but de la rosa, if he has it on, could be a future piece of our rotation.

at least give him april and may to see if he belongs, if he isn't ready by then he has run out of chances and he could be sent down or demoted to the bullpen.

BTW, does he have options left?

on pace for 40 homeruns given up
last year, if De la Rosa had pitched 200 innings.
