Blanco vs. Berroa

According to that fine judge of baseball talent:  Buddy Bell!

"[Berroa] is still going to be a heck of a player," Bell said. "Blanco has got a long way to go even before he considers himself in Angel Berroa's category." -kcroyals.com

Ouch.  Simply ouch.  That's a slap in the face if I ever heard/saw/felt one.  If I were Blanco, I'd go in a corner and cry.

to quote
the Little Rascals, "If we were your kids, we'd punish ourselves!"

Um, not sure why that made sense, but the quotes pop into my head. Obviously our suspicion that Berroa has blackmail photos of Buddy Bell in compromising positions is correct. Damn him.

seriously
why would Bell say that? even if you affirm Berroa (itself a retarded idea) why do you dismiss Blanco so heavily thanks for this diary, every Royal fan should read it and truly understand what we are dealing with here

2006 lines
Berroa: .230/.255/.333, 12 walks, 75 strikeouts, 8 homers in 438 plate appearances

Blanco: .264/.303/.319, 3 walks, 13 strikeouts in 75 PAs

Admittedly, both these guys can't hit, but this idea that Berroa isn't an awful player is a sign this organization is truly insane.

Key difference between the two in my mind
is that one is 22 and seemingly going to improve, while the other is 28 and has already begun to decline.

by loyal2s dad on Sep 11, 2006 9:27 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Other key difference
is that one is scheduled to be vastly overpaid, while the other will stay relatively cheap for a few more years.

Bell talks about Berroa like he's a young prospect
"Berroa is still going to be a heck of a player"

To quote John McEnroe:

YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!

The man is 28, and his career is careening downhill faster than the President's approval rating.

Apparently, among other deficiencies in understanding statistical analysis (I refer to the entire "OPS/PMS" quote), we can now add a complete lack of understanding as to player development, peak years, etc. to that vast void in the universe known as Buddy Bell's brain.

To my daughter
I didn't know you were a Little Rascals fan.

That quote is making me laugh just reading it, for some reason.

more of the early 90s
movie, but they're similar. I have the DVD. The whole Buddy Bell dismissing Blanco made me think of that.

I can't stop posting on this subject!
Reading between the lines, I guess Blanco is getting an extended tryout to be a backup utility IF next season. Granted, that may ultimately be his role, but I think to say that a 22 year old will never be better than a utility player is more than a little bit ridiculous.

Of course, we can thank Allard Baird for this, because Blanco was called up to the majors in two different seasons before he was ready, and now he will be out of options next year.

My (hopefully) last post on this topic
What if Blanco were to hit 300 the last three weeks, and play a great defensive shortstop on top of that? Would Berroa still be considered the starter going into next season?

Wouldn't the Royals be better served by declaring the job up for grabs next spring training? Berroa has already earned enough money for a lifetime, so that won't motivate him; perhaps he might be motivated by the threat of being benched permanently instead? Perhaps Blanco would be emboldened by the opportunity to win more than just a utility role next season?

We are stuck with Berroa
for two reasons
  1. the organization is stubborn as hell
  2. the ogranization is cheap as hell
the won't not play the 8 million dollar man, or whatever

awful awful awful awful

FIRE BELL

B-error-a
would he still be considered the starter even if Blanco finishes well?  of course he will.  Buddy has his back, B-error-a deserves to start.  He is a gamer.  He's a old fashioned player. ..... oh gawd

I was pleased to hear that they were shutting B-error-a down and planning on playing Blanco for the bulk of the remainder of the season.  I was  pleased to be able to watch a shortstop who actually tried to get to balls not hit right at him and who had some plate discipline.  Now I read that quote and I want to rip my eyes out.  Buddy is really taking a "different" approach to this than most rational people might.  Yikes, yikes, yikes.

Where is Bell's accountability
  1. He's just being incredibly stupid in every sense of the word.
  2. He's selling out his own player. I thought he was an "old school" "good baseball guy"

The more I think about it...
the more I want the Royals to give up on Blanco, followed by him getting traded, and then turning into a league avg or better shortstop. Maybe that would give the organization pause for thought the next time they are saddled with a bad contract, and they will have the fortitude to do what's right.

Read the Star today; Bell is kinda blaming the fans for getting down on Berroa!

SIMPLY RIDICULOUS RUBBISH!

by loyal2s dad on Sep 11, 2006 3:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Bell needs to leave
I really hope Blanco didn't read that. Poor guy. Quite a ways to go before considering himself to be up there with Angel? Angel's gonna be a heck of a player? Apparently we're in a 4 year old T-ball league here. Good gosh...anybody with the idea that B-error-a is gonna be a heck of a player realllly isn't making anyone feel comfortable, because that guy controls every game.

And, at 22 years old, Blanco is already showing that he is a much better defender than Angel. Just some thoughts.

theory
I have a theory.  I think that Buddy was confused and really meant that Blanco is going to be one heck of a player and that B-error-a is the one who has a long way to go to prove himself.  Probably a plot by the liberal media.

after reading the Star
this organization should be ashamed
