New Blog: Five For Howling - for Coyotes fans Bar-right-arrows

Monday Extravaganza Open Thread- Big Moe Memorial Edition

American culture has lost another great voice. R.I.P. Kenneth Moore, aka "Big Moe". Dead at the age of 33.

Townsman of a stiller town...

Moe appears to be at least the second rapper to succomb the ravages of obesity. He is preceeded in death by fellow large men the Notorious B.I.G. and Big Pun. He will be best remembered for his two drug-related hits, "Barre Baby" and "Purple Stuff".

At this moment, I'm reminded of Gray's Elegy:

For them no more the blazing hearth shall burn,
Or busy housewife ply her evening care:
No children run to lisp their sire's return,
Or climb his knees the envied kiss to share,

Oft did the harvest to their sickle yield,
Their furrow oft the stubborn glebe has broke;
How jocund did they drive their team afield!
How bow'd the woods beneath their sturdy stroke!

-----

As we mourn Big Moe, the sports world kindly offers us an action packed night, with Game Three of the ALCS (temps in the high 50s) and Game Four of the NLCS (temps in the high 30s) paired off against Monday Night Football. According to AZ Snakepit, Melvin is not starting Webb tonight, instead going with Micah Owings. Is Owings mormon? I'd bet dollars to donuts he is.

- In other news Beyond the Boxscore pays homage to Jason Smith.

- While new manager speculation continues at the official site. Who will be the new manager of the Kansas City Royals in 2007? We'll likely hear very little, then there will be a flurry of interviews, then an out-of-the-blue announcement. Your guess is as good as mine, but I think we can rule out ex-famous types like Bobby Valentine or Joe Torre.

Finally...

Go Diamondbacks!! Western Kansas has never been more susceptible to the whorish attractions offered by the Rockies. We must hold the western front!

Anyone else
miss the days when scouting reports said "Fastball at 93-94" or team "keys to the game" were...actually, I don't think "keys to the game" ever make sense.

All postseason long, it's been
"Mike Lowell up the middle" this, "Lowell now sprays the ball to the opposite field" that. I encourage you all to see how legit you think this claim is when you look at Lowell's hit chart.

http://mlb.mlb.com/stats/individual_player_hitting_chart.jsp?playerID=136780&statType=1

Up the middle? Yeah, he hits a lot of liners to center. Opposite field? Not so much.

hey
didn't you know he learned to hit the opposite way when he came to Boston?

by wildthang on Oct 15, 2007 7:38 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I really don't want to hear about it :P
even Don and Jerry consistently get this wrong. He's absolutely still a pull hitter...that's where all his power is to. He grounds singles up the middle and occasionally--not often at all--dumps one into right. Notice how few extra base hits went the opposite way?

Can someone please link
Kenny Lofton's name to steroids so I can justify what I just saw?

Hey, whaddya know?
Joe Buck pointed out that one of Eric Wedge's brilliant substitutes, Asdrubal Cabrera, has actually been very bad recently. Kudos, Joe, even if you used batting average as the stat to "prove" it.

Opposite field double for Ortiz
haven't seen many of those this year.

Ortiz, you dope!
You weren't supposed to be going to third on that in the first place.

Okay, that was weird.
My comp closed up shop out of the blue. My first thought was that the campus network had banned me for using limewire or something, but it turned out that I left it on last night and energy saver abruptly kicked in.

I told one of my friends that Matsuzaka's arm with falling off. He didn't believe me. Um, haha?

Hello, Mike Timlin.

Wow, McCarver says he has a "hard, heavy sinker."

  2. He doesn't.

Amazing
that the Indians have three somewhat unconventional off-speed pitchers throwing in the post-season - Westbrook, Carmona, Byrd - two sinkerballers and one old school junk pitcher.

FYI, just in case anyone's wondering who this is I was formerly under the handle NYC Royal.  I've changed locations so I thought an RR sn change was appropriate as well considering how much time I spend here.

I will. I greatly enjoy the new city too.
After spending over a year in New York, DC feels like a return home to the Midwest.

That's really amazing or really sad, depending on how you look at it.

Typical Buck/McCarver exchange
Getting all worked up about whether to throw Beckett on 3 days rest.  I don't mean to say that it's not a worthy topic of conversation; it's just that their dialogue kills me, I think because it reminds me of the string of Yankees titles in the mid-90's.

They'll make a push in the eighth,
but if Wedge has the sense to use Betancourt the Sox are probably doomed. NHZ odds at 4-1 that the Sox come back and win.

Youk is fun to watch
For someone who has such great plate discipline and routinely battles strikes, you'd expect more results out of him in terms of batting average and power.  I guess that goes to show how little tools he has in the first place.
"I'm tired of all these stupid a$$ questions every day. Why the f**k would I hit Brett for Miller?" The rest is history.

by DC Royal on Oct 15, 2007 10:10 PM EDT   0 recs

He doesn't hit for that high
of an average because of his skillset: he works deep into a lot of counts and winds up striking out a lot as well as his well-known walk-prowess. In terms of power...well...he's never really been that powerful. There was a time in the minors where it was not clear at all if he would develop enough power to start anywhere.

Blah
See, now the vaunted JoBow avoids the heart of the line-up by a longshot. And by the way, Betancourt is crazy good this year and it makes no sense that he hasn't closed some games.
