Winter Meetings Day Three Open Thread

So I guess we now know that grad students wake up earlier than baseball executives, because there's still nothing doin' this morning.

→ JoePo has doubts and quibbles regarding the Guillen signing.

→ Dick Kaegel reports that the Royals are still pursuing Andruw Jones.

→ This will shock you: Ron Gardenhire wants David Eckstein. Undoubtedly, Eckstein is the baseball equivalent of the Northwest Passage, late 90s Jennifer Anniston and a college football playoff. Everyone wants him, but why?

→ The Yankees say "they're out" re: Santana, leading to speculation in Boston that he'll either be a Red Sock or a Twin in 2008.

→ Rob and Rany discuss the Guillen signing.

→ Will Carroll says that Lester's health (arm, not cancer) is holding up the Santana trade. Meanwhile, Gammons is now saying he doesn't expect a deal to be made.

You know the drill... if you read something, hear something, feel something, share it with your RR friends here.

I will once again point out
that it's hard for me to condemn that deal. Church is already a solid contributor on both sides of ball, Milledge is far from a sure thing.

But you can argue Milledge is as good as Church now, and seven years younger.

Who would we rather have
Jones or Fukudome?  Personally, I am leaning Jones because he is a proven commodity and has better power projection.  What does everybody else think?

Honestly
For what they are saying Fukudome may get and what it's looking like Jones may have to settle for, I think I lean towards Jones. How old is Fukudome again, I don't remember?

That Nick Punto and Jason Tyner are worthy of starting spots, you must believe David Eckstein is an MVP type player.

Hey MileHigh
I ate a big Bowl of Oranges today.  Bought them in Kansas.  Yeah, couldn't find any oranges for sale in Missouri.  They tasted great.  Better than cotton.  Who would want a bowl of cotton?

Sorry, I had to do it.  I was weak.

Funny sidenote.  My little brother is a Virgina Tech alumni.  My wife and I are spending Christmas with my brother and his wife's family in Omaha.  I was going to buy their little boy a Jayhawk for Christmas before the BCS announcement.  Maybe that would be going to far now.

Its ridiculous to think that Miller, Lincecum, and Hughes/Bucholz could all get traded this offseason. Not to mention Santana, Haren, Bedard, and Willis. Teams are finally showing some cajones it seems like.

I posted in the 2010 thread
But in case anyone missed it there:

Rany is guardedly optimistic on Guillen, Rob is his typical crank-self

Goodbye David Riske - signs a three year $13 million deal with Milwaukee. It includes an option for a fourth year at $4.75 million and $2 million in incentives. The Royals will get a free agent compensatory pick (I believe a sandwich pick?) in next year's draft.

The Mets "are not one of the four finalists for" Hiroki Kuroda, according to the New York Post. The Mariners, Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Royals have all been linked pretty heavily to Kuroda.

New York Newsday reports that Kosuke Fukudome "has narrowed his choices to the Royals and Cubs."
The Padres had reportedly offered Kosuke Fukudome a three-year deal. MLB.com believes it was worth $8 million per year.

Trey Hillman is impressed by Fukudome

Chicago-Tribune links the Royals to CF Aaron Rowand. Rowand is seeking a five year deal.

Baseball America gives the dish on Rule 5 rumors. The Marlins are interested in taking Royals OF Chris Lubanski. The draft is tomorrow.

disappointed about Marlins
Pirates and Marlins were two teams where I saw Lubanski actually sticking the whole year if he gets drafted.

NYRoyal -- still up for a wager?  Instead of cash, let's do a signature bet -- you can choose what mine says for 3 months (provided it's not vulgar).  Of course, my betting would be contingent on his being drafted by one of the two aforementioned teams.  (e.g If the Tigers take him, it's a wash.)

your ad here

by marbotty on Dec 5, 2007 2:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm in...conditionally
So the bet is if Lubanski is drafted by certain teams (which teams?) I say he won't be kept for the full season on the 25-man roster.  We can make the ASB the cutoff.  If he's been on the 25-man roster all season to that point, then you win.  Also, it's a push if he's drafted and then the drafting team cuts a deal with Royals to keep him, but not on the 25-man roster.

But I have a problem with the terms.  I would need to know beforehand what you would have my sig be.  And, I can't think of anything that I would enjoy seeing in your signature.

I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on Dec 5, 2007 2:53 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

marlins or pirates
Your new signature would be

"I probably disagree with you.  But if you are marbotty, I probably shouldn't."

Something in that vein.  If I win, I'll come up with a few and let you pick.  This will be one of the options.  All will be good natured and none would be, as I said, vulgar.

You can do the same.  If we use the ASB as the cutoff, then we'll just leave it on until season's end.  That should also give us plenty of time to come up with some good funfilled signatures.  (Unless Florida cuts him April 3.)

by marbotty on Dec 5, 2007 3:20 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Deal
Those terms sound good to me.  Once the bet is resolved (Lubanski not drafted, or offered back to the Royals or kept through the ASB), the winner can give the loser a list of a few sigs to choose from.  Perhaps something like:

Despite my frequent protestations to the contrary, NYRoyal is almost certainly right.

That's a little wordy, but I like the sentiment.  I'll work on it.

I probably disagree with you.

Rowand
That's funny, right afterthe season, I posted that I would like us to sign Rowand this offseason and trade for Quentin, etc.  Then, this past few weeks Rowand hasn't even been on the radar and after looking at his numbers, I was less impressed then I thought I would be (only one 20 HR season).  And with all this Jones talk, I wasn't even considering Rowand anymore.  Now it says that he is entertaining an offer from us.  That would be funny.  I think that would really start a sereis of moves, for sure involving DDJ.  Rowand would automatically become our leadoff guy for the next 4 years.  I think getting Jones would make Teahen more expendable.  For some reason, I'm not sure what.  I think because they seem to be around the same place in the lineup.
   Whats the better lineup:
DDJ
Grud
Jones
Butler
Guillen
Gordon

or:
Rowand
Grud
Teahen
Butler
Guillen
Gordon

What do you think?

I don't see
Butler batting 4 hole just yet. If we get Jones I think it would be 3-Guillen, 4-Jones, 5-Butler.
Rowand though makes for an interesting line up.
If we get him we don't have to move DeJesus if a good trade is not there. So it could be a line up of
1-DDJ, 2-Grudz, 3-Rowand, 4-Guillen/Butler (the other batting 5)

I was with you
on wanting us to go after Rowand at the end of the season. Honestly I just figured we weren't in the mix for him. From his standpoint or ours, so I just kind of forgot about that especially with the Jones stuff going on. I think with signing Guillen that Jones would be the better complement. Wouldn't be against a Rowand/Jones/Guillen outfield though. Won't happen I know but interesting to think about.

How about this gamble:
Royals win the battle for Fukadome, leaving the Cubs need for a RF (where they planned to play Fukadome). Royals offer Teahen to Cubs for some package that includes Mark Prior.

Royals OF consists of. left to right, DDJ, Fukadome, Guillen.

Prior regains his former status, and suddenly the Royals have a kick-ass rotation to boot.

by loyal2s dad on Dec 5, 2007 1:07 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No on Prior
I'd rather have Sean Marshall or Rich Hill. Otherwise, I like your line of thinking. Aside from Guillen, that would be a good defensive outfield.
Relive Royals History at royalsretro.blogspot.com

by RoyalsRetro on Dec 5, 2007 1:08 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Assuming we'd sign Fukudome...
I'd more likely stick him in left.  Fukudome won Gold Gloves in Japan for his work as a corner OFer, and DDJ is one of the best defensive CFers around.  I wouldn't want to mess with either.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 5, 2007 1:11 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Would rather see
the Royals push for Jones or Rowand. Fukudome is unproven in MLB and I think the years he is looking for is too much of a gamble. If he flakes you are stuck with him. At least you have an idea of what you're getting with Jones and Rowand.
Sign Alex Gordon to a life time contract!!!

by eboston on Dec 5, 2007 1:15 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

3 years...
is the maximum that Fukudome wants.  A gamble, to be sure, but I'd rather risk my neck for three years of Fukudome than, say, 5-6 years of Jones or Rowand, both of whom will almost certainly be seriously declining after the second year of their contracts.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 5, 2007 1:17 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd rather have any of those three...
than Guillen.  I think that pickup is going to bite us in the ass.
"I DARE you to make less sense."

by dejackso on Dec 5, 2007 1:18 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think
3-4 will land Jones. With no one looking like they want to go over 2 that makes 3 years seem very possible and 4 years a solid offer.
Sign Alex Gordon to a life time contract!!!

by eboston on Dec 5, 2007 1:19 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That can all change
I might be willing to go up to, say, 3/48 on Jones, but with Fukudome seemingly on the brink of a deal with us or the Cubs, the market for good OFers is pretty much down to Jones and Rowand, which will probably drive up each other's price, both in terms of years and $$$.  But bottom line, I would be loath to sign Jones for four years.  And even three years I hesitate on.

And Rowand has had enough interest from the start that if he is no longer seeking a long-term deal, he's insane.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 5, 2007 1:31 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd be for it depending on the package.
I'd really like to see us go after Haren, but that's probably not going to happen.  I'd be very happy to have Prior even if he was limited to relief.  Hell, we could put him in at closer and let Soria move up to rotation.

Prior is one of the most talented pitchers that I have ever seen and it is a big shame that he's always hurt.

"I DARE you to make less sense."

by dejackso on Dec 5, 2007 1:16 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We'd have to sell the farm to get Haren
Feel like surrendering Luke Hochevar, Dan Cortes, and Mike Moustakas?  Because that is probably, at a minimum, what it would take to land Haren.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 5, 2007 1:22 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But...
How good would a 1-2 of Haren and Meche look at the top of the rotation?  Remember the battles they had early in the season when they were 1-2 in ERA?

I maybe crazy but, I'm not against giving up Hochevar and Cortes plus someone else for Haren (who is under team control for a couple more years) I would rather that other piece not be Moose, but we would be getting something pretty special back in return

Haren and Meche
That would be a good two-headed monster at the top of our rotation, for sure.  But keep in mind that the Royals still will most likely not compete for a playoff spot in 2008, meaning we essentially would have a one-year window with Haren's current contract.  Is that one-year shot worth sacrificing our three of our best prospects, and possibly more?  It appears based on the reports coming in that three excellent prospects is the minimum needed for the A's to entertain offers for Haren.  Some reports say the A's will want as many as six players for him.  I'd pass.

by DarthYoshi on Dec 5, 2007 4:19 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, you are correct
The Royals are not one player short of contention.  So there is no way we should get rid of all of our best prospects and/or young talent for one starting pitcher.  We are still rebuilding.  We're not at the bottom of the rebuilding curve, but we're still rebuilding.  Thankfully, Moore knows that.
I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on Dec 5, 2007 4:22 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, definitely.
That's the reason I didn't think it was going to happen.  I'd love to have Haren and I would be willing to trade some of our young talent to him, but I wouldn't be willing to trade enough that Oakland would give him to us.

After Santana, he is the person I most would like to get (that has been rumored to be available).

Saw the transaction from yesterday that Colby Lewis was released.  Couldn't ever figure out why he was on the 40 man anyway.  If KC signs another FA  like Jones or Fukudome, we'll have to drop another standout from the 40 man like Vlademil or Jason Smith.  Tough decisions for sure.  That is why GMDM gets paid the big bucks.

Fox
He's a catcher that played AAA and a little time with the Cubs.  Sounds like a Paul Phillips clone.  Not a good trade.  If we are set on trading Teahen, which I'm not a big fan of though, I would look for a package deal of Murton and Hill or Marshall (preferably Hill) and also give them a Huber, Costa, Maier type.

A deal for Teahen has to have a starting pitcher
coming back to them.  Murton and Hill/Marshall for Teahen and a spare OF would be a good deal for KC.  Goals for KC offseason is to bring another starter and Teahen or DDJ is the best bargaining chip KC to get that return.

And I think that's fair.  His HGH purchases went from 2003-2005, I believe.  So that is one year of overlap with MLB's ban.  And there was no positive test.  So some punishment is fair and appropriate.  Fifty games would be excessive under the current rules.
I probably disagree with you.

Fukudome over Jones
If I'm not mistaken, Jones wants better than Torii money, which equals more than 18 per.  Doing quick math, 4 years/50 mil equals...a lot less than 18 per.  From what I've read, Fuku is an on-base machine, has line-drive power, runs well...and probably doesn't hit .222 over an entire season.  And he's not getting fat.  Kauffman is not a home run park.  I might take Fuku over Jones straight up, let alone for 6 million (per year) less.

by jackie ballgame on Dec 5, 2007 3:56 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nobody
...is talking about Jones getting anywhere near as much as Hunter.  I'm sure Boras wants big money for Jones (he wants big money for all of his clients, like any agent), but it is pretty clear that he isn't going to get Hunter money.  Right now, he's being offered short-term deals.  I know of a reported 2/32 offer.  Quite frankly, I haven't heard of any offers better than that yet.  He'll end up signing for more than that, but right now it doesn't look like he'll get 5 years and I bet he gets less than $16M per season, regardless of the contract term.
I probably disagree with you.

And if we sign Fuku, maybe Kuroda comes too
I heard the Royals could have as much as 45 mil to spend this winter, and Kuroda is 'waiting til after the winter meetings' to make his decision.  In on Fuku and In on Kuroda.

by jackie ballgame on Dec 5, 2007 3:59 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If that scenario occurs (and I doubt it will)
In acquiring Hillman, Yabuta, Fukudome, and Kuroda, the Royals would go from being the LEAST Asian influenced MLB team to one of the MOST.

by Matty486 on Dec 5, 2007 5:12 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That seems unlikely
Everything I've read says the Royals have $25M to spend.  I'm sure they'd be willing to go over that, but I doubt they'd do three huge contracts this offseason.  They've already shelled out $15M in new contracts for 2008.  Fukudome and Kuroda would be at least $22M more.  $37M is possible, but I think it is unlikely.  I invite Glass to prove me wrong.
I probably disagree with you.

White Sox interested in DeJesus?
Has anyone mentioned this?  I didn't see anything about this on MLBTraderumors or Rotoworld, but Bruce Levine (Chicago sports radio) reports that the White Sox are in DeJesus if they can't get Rowand.  I wonder what they would offer.  It would take Gio Gonzalez+.
I probably disagree with you.

Kenny Williams
If he becomes desperate and frustrated enough, I am confident that GMDM could bilk him into giving up two good prospects for DeJesus.

Clearly they don't mind intra-division trades
Although it definitely easier to make lower level intra-divison trades (Mac for Lumsden/Cortes; Sisco for Gload).  Those aren't the kinds of deals that have major risk or reward.  Dealing a good everyday player to a division rival you're going to play 19 times a year is a little tougher.  I hope Fukudome and Rowand sign and then Kenny starts really sweating.  Then Moore can swoop in and "save him" from his awful offseason by giving him DeJesus for Gonzalez and Fields (ok, that's a joke, but you get the idea).
I probably disagree with you.

Blockbuster in the works????
Per MLBTR.com:

"Just got an incredible rumor from a trusted New York sportswriter.  Stay with me, because this one's crazy.  But rest assured that if the source wasn't good, I wouldn't post it.

Minnesota has initiated talks for a three-way blockbuster with the Twins and A's.  Here's how it would go down:

Mets send Jose Reyes, Kevin Mulvey, and Hector Pellot to A's
A's send Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson to Mets
A's send Dan Haren to Twins
Twins send Johan Santana to Mets

Mets get Johan Santana, Bobby Crosby and Dan Johnson
A's get Jose Reyes and Kevin Mulvey
Twins get Dan Haren and Hector Pellot

The source says Haren is exactly the type of player the Twins want for Santana, a cheap frontline starter. It's known the Mets would hate to deal Reyes but they would get some value beyond Santana.  Billy Beane is happy because he gets Reyes for one more year than he had Haren plus longtime favorite Mulvey.  And, he's out of Crosby's contract."

Women and cellulite
Cellulite is common in all kinds of women, even skinny ones.  Gwyneth Paltrow is skinny as hell and she has cellulite.  You get a "good" view of it in "The Talented Mr. Ripley."  It's a reality and it is no big deal.  None of these women are perfect.  Victoria's Secret catalogs, Playboy and Maxim pictorials airbrush the hell out of these women to make them look "perfect."  Hopefully we all realize that everyone has flaws and we don't sweat it.  A little cellulite or no, Jennifer Love Hewitt is HOT.

I should add
The pics have to be based on someone else's website (or your own). And you have to use the URL of the picture itself, not the URL of the website. To find that out, right click on the picture and click "properties." Under "Image Properties" copy the location (it should end in a .jpeg or .gif or .bmp, not the .com in my bad example above). Then use that url in your <IMG SRC=....

I mean, Lieber was only a Royal in the minors, not the majors, right?

Lubanski
According to BA, Florida's targeting him with the fourth pick in the Rule 5 draft tomorrow.  Given Florida's massive rebuilding effort, I would not be surprised if Lubanski were able to stick with their parent club for entire season.

This may mean farewell to the 5th pick in the first round of the 2003 draft whom we had such high hopes for.

2003 first round picks after Lubanski who have reached the majors:

  1. Baltimore, Nick Markakis, lhp, Young Harris (Ga.) JC.
  2. Pittsburgh, Paul Maholm, lhp, Mississippi St.
  3. Texas, John Danks, lhp, Round Rock (Texas) HS.
  4. Colorado, Ian Stewart, 3b, La Quinta HS, Garden Grove, Calif.
  5. New York Mets, Lastings Milledge, of, Lakewood Ranch HS, Palmetto, Fla.
  6. Toronto, Aaron Hill, ss, LSU.
  7. Cincinnati, Ryan Wagner, rhp, Houston.
  8. Boston, David Murphy, of, Baylor.
  9. Arizona, Conor Jackson, 3b, California.
  10. Montreal, Chad Cordero, rhp, Cal State Fullerton.
  11. Los Angeles, Chad Billingsley, rhp, Defiance (Ohio) HS.

  16. Seattle, Adam Jones, ss, Samuel Morse HS, San Diego.

Delmon Young and Rickie Weeks
were the first two picks, followed by two college pitchers who never made it (Tim Stauffer to the Padres and Kyle Sleeth to the Tigers).

Overall though, I'd agree that the best talent, especially in terms of long-term potential, came later.

Apparently, the Royals are interested in EVERYONE
6:28 p.m., from Jerry Crasnick
* Kris Benson, who missed the entire 2007 season with a shoulder injury, will audition for clubs in Phoenix on Dec. 17, according to agent Gregg Clifton. Benson expects to throw between 65 and 80 pitches in an attempt to show clubs he's fully recovered from shoulder surgery. "We've had pretty sincere interest from about nine teams,'' Clifton said. "Kris is probably a guy who's looking at a one-year contract, so from a team's perspective, there's a lot of upside with hardly any potential downside.'' The Phillies and Royals could be in the mix for Benson.

Andruw Jones update
The Dodgers are interested in free-agent center fielder Andruw Jones, but contrary to earlier reports, Jones was not in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Jones is also being pursued by Kansas City.

Apparently the sticking point is the number of years. Both the Dodgers and Royals are seeking short-term deals, while agent Scott Boras is seeking a longer deal for his client.

Asked if anything was imminent, Royals GM Dayton Moore replied: "Naw, I don't know. There are some things that could happen, but I'm not holding my breath."

Jones, Rowand, Kuroda asking for too many years
From Steve Henson at Yahoo sports:

Center fielders Aaron Rowand and Andruw Jones want deals of four or five years, and teams are offering Rowand only three years and Jones only two. Two National League general managers who have pursued both players said demands from their agents have come down slightly in the past two days, but not enough to come to an agreement.

The same is true with starting pitchers. Hiroki Kuroda, considered the top free agent arm despite questions about his ability to handle major league hitters, wants a four-year deal. The Seattle Mariners might give it to him, and the Los Angeles Dodgers have already made a three-year offer. The Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals also have had serious discussions with Kuroda, who was known as "Mr. Complete Game" in Japan.

I probably disagree with you.

Grudz availible?
MLBTR quotes Thomas Harding as saying: "Mark Grudzielanek can be had in the right deal, but the Rox aren't interested."

This is the first I'd heard that Dayton was listening to offers for Grudz...I'm wondering, who do we get to play 2nd if we trade Grudz.  I'm assuming it would be German, but we'd really be giving up some serious defense by using him as an everday 2nd baseman.

Thoughts?

I'd rather be watching baseball.

by Sisquatch Kids on Dec 5, 2007 11:38 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He should be on the block
Why not?  He's not part of the Royals future plans, so if they can trade him for something which helps for the future, go for it.  German can certainly handle playing second.  Worse defense, but at least as good with the bat, maybe better in 2008.
I probably disagree with you.

by NYRoyal on Dec 6, 2007 12:04 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Definitely agree
Grudz will be gone either at the end of next season or by the trade deadline most likely if they don't move him before then.  I'm just not all that fond of German's defense and we're probably a couple years from developing someone for 2nd in house.  So I guess it'd really have to be the right deal for me to be okay with trading him before the season starts.
I'd rather be watching baseball.

by Sisquatch Kids on Dec 6, 2007 12:25 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That is a big maybe
German's batting got a lot worse in 2007--a 70-point drop in OBP, 80-point drop in SLG, and 40-point drop in OPS+.  If we make German the everyday second baseman, it can only be justified if his hitting improves--his defense is abysmal compared to Grudz's.  If German's bat does indeed improve in 2008, then I'm all for flipping Grudz at the trade deadline for whatever we can get.  But I don't know why I should think that will happen.

too much for him in my mind, no way we are seriously competing in 2 years and $18 mil a year is too much to pay to "earn respect" or whatever.
