Around SBN: Are The Orioles Bad Or Unlucky With Their Young Pitching?

Who the hell is Ben Hendrickson?

so apparently we got this guy from the Brewers. I know nothing about him and I can't say I know anything about the guy we gave up.

Cool. I guess.

From ESPN.Com

"Kansas City Royals: Right-hander Ben Hendrickson was traded from the Brewers to the Royals on Tuesday for minor league catcher Maxim St. Pierre.

Hendrickson went 1-10 with a 7.41 ERA in 12 starts and two relief appearances in the majors in 2004 and 2006.

St. Pierre played 10 seasons in the minor leagues for Detroit before joining the Royals as a minor league free agent in January. He was assigned to Triple-A Nashville.

The Associated Press contributed to this report."

I'll check this...
...but I seem to remember him being a Brewers Rule 5er.

Ben Hendrickson
Was a guy who can pitch in AAA but not the majors with the Brewers. Got a pretty good curveball but not overpowering stuff. I think he's a lefty, upside I'd say a #3 starter(the very very optimistic upside), as things are going now, a #5 guy or a LOOGY isn't expecting too much I'd say, heck, we didn't give up anything too useful for him.

He's a righty
Mark Hendrickson is the lefty.

eh
still, St. Pierre is nothing

A better question is
Who the hell was Maxim St. Pierre?

Ben Hendrickson

Pretty decent AAA numbers. He could be another Brandon Duckworth. I'd rather see guys like this in Omaha than the over 30 dreck we've seen in years past.

Hendrickson
Quad A guy, who would benefit from a change of scenery.  He could be a nice #5 guy or LOOGY that seems reasonable.  If he works out, we got something for nothing (other than losing one of the best names in the system).

well
I don't think Max St. Pierre is as good a baseball name as it is a hockey name

Could be a classic late bloomer
The Brewers have been fairly high on this guy the last two years, but simply are out of options for him. I like him competing for the #5 spot.

Standard late Spring Training stuff
Right now teams are trying to make sure they have the right pieces in place in all of their minor league teams.  Give up a infielder here, add a pitcher there.  Trading minor surpluses to fill in minor weaknesses.

The bad news is that Maxim St. Pierre is probably one of the coolest names in baseball.  He will be missed.

Great curveball
According to the Brewers fans at Baseball Think Factory, Hendrickson has a perfectly hittable fastball, but a great curveball. Hopefully he can cultivate that. They were pretty high on him.

I'd be happy if
...he could just locate that fastball well enough to make him a decent two-pitch reliever.

There is that upside
As he's never been used as a reliever. Not big K-rates in the minors, though.

It would be a hell...
...of a leap of faith, that's for sure.

I'm trying to figure out
...if I should make a leap of faith and buy a Greinke jersey.  He's my favorite Royals pitcher but if he flips out and falls back to the minors again, I wouldn't want that jersey reminding me of his failure.  Personally, I'm very optimistic about Zack.  But I don't want to jinx him.

As they say in Starsky and Hutch...
..."do it." You can't lose; first of all, I think there's a great chance he makes comeback to a low-4.00s ERA. Second of all, if he ends up out of baseball by May, his jersey will be a quaint reminder of a time gone by. Like my Smash Mouth CDs.

Wasn't Hendrickson the Brewers
first round draft pick a couple years ago.  They brought him up from AAA the last couple of seasons and he failed badly as a starter.  He is going to be an Omaha project.

Now, it's going to be a McCarthy-like witch hunt on here.

Are you or have you ever been Ben's daddy?
