Breaking News! Mark Redman Signed by Braves

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070309&content_id=1835055&vkey=spt2007news&fex t=.jsp

Perhaps I'm overstepping my authority here, but I felt it was necessary, given the All-Star caliber year that Mark Redman gave y'all last year, to front page the fact the Redman--he of the 11-10, 5.71 ERA season last year (4.1 VORP)--has been inked to a minor league contract by the Braves. Apparently, the motivation for the Tomahawks was that Mike Hampton is hurt again. This signing raises a couple questions:

  1. Why wouldn't you already have a better contingency plan if Mike Hampton is a starter on your team?
  2. Since when has Mike Hampton actually been pitching?
  3. Did anyone notice that Mark Redman backwards is "Kram Namder," which sounds exactly like a 25th century space-faring bounty hunter's name?
  4. How how how how could Redman have "overpriced himself"? Does he think no one noticed his ERA last year?
AND, the most important one:

5. Can Mark Redman outpitch Gil Meche?

I know everyone was just waiting with bated breath for somebody to sign Kram Namder, Gun For Hire so we could ask question five after GMDM dropped the big bucks on Gilgameche. EDIT: use this is the open thread for today's beisbol.

Glad
Redman finally found a home. He will always be an All Star in our hearts.

R.I.P. Allard Baird Era
Yes, Redman was an All Star.  No, he didn't deserve it.

Three words.....

GET OVER IT.

Why don't we focus on this year instead?

by JRaider2005 on Mar 9, 2007 5:25 PM EST   0 recs

Er, the post wasn't intended to be a serious
...knock on Redman's honor or the Royals organization. Personally, I think Meche will definitely outpitch Redman, but some people had brought that up in a thread a couple weeks ago.

All-Stars
Meche will definitely pitch better than Redman. I think we will get the same performance that Redman gave us from Bannister for a fraction of the cost.  The real bright side heading into the season is that the Royals have some chances to have a legitimate all-star this year, someone who actually deserves to be there.  It will be fun to see who our representative will be out of Teahen, DeJesus, Gordon, Sweeney???, Shealy.

On the subject of worthless innings-eaters...
...did anyone happen to hear Kevin Keitzman's interview yesterday with the Belly?  The Belly seems to finally understand what we've been saying all along: Berrora's no better than Blanco.  In fact, according to the Belly, Blanco has earned at least a shot at the starting SS role on Opening Day.  I don't know what you all think, but I think it's huge.  Before he was saying it wasn't even a competition, but he clearly said that there's an open race for starting SS between Blanco and Berrora.  Exciting stuff.  Especially with the way Blanco's hitting the ball with some authority this Spring.
On a hot summer day, is there anything better than a hot grill, a cold Boulevard, and Ryan & Denny on the radio?

Contract terms
Redman will get $750K when he is added to the 40-man roster (which I expect will happen before opening day) and can earn $500K in bonuses.

Boy, this is a great deal the Braves got.  Seriously.  I don't think much of Redman but if he was available for this price and was willing to sign an minor leauge deal (which doesn't actually mean he would also be willing to actually report to a minor leauge team when the season started) I wish the Royals had paid for him.

As far as him pricing himself out of the market, I just don't understand that.  Clearly if he was willing to sign for a maximum of $1.25M he was not pricing himself out of anyone's market.  I was expecting to see him sign a multi-year deal for something like $3M/per.  The difference between Redman and some of the other FA pitchers who got paid this off season is not too great.  If Marquis got $7M/per Redman sure was worth half that sum.

Wow, this deal really looks sweet for the Braves.  I have a very realistic view of Redman's ability level, but I do expect he will be a better pitcher this year than De la Rosa.  He might be better than Perez.

by James Quinn on Mar 9, 2007 6:04 PM EST   0 recs

Definitely a sweet deal
for the Braves - low cost, easier league, what's not to like?

A return
what if he made a return to the All Star Game? As the starter?

by wildthang on Mar 9, 2007 7:03 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

The Deal
Is not actually bad. I hear what you guys are saying, and there's some truth to it. I just don't get why the Braves would do this instead of promoting from within. Kram Namder is average at best at pitching. Bounty hunting, on the other hand...

I'll need to check out my BA prospect handbook
when I get home, but isn't the Braves farm system a little bare at the moment?

I think this is a good signing for them.  I honestly expect him to cobble together a decent year for them.

by Stook on Mar 9, 2007 8:03 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah..nothing from within to promote
according to Baseball America.  For the price this is a good move for Atlanta.

by Stook on Mar 10, 2007 12:55 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

I'm so baffled
Mark Redman was supposed to be "out of our price range" this offseason. He signed a minor league deal! So, 2 years and 3 mil would have kept this guy in blue. But, we want to start the year with De La Rosa instead? Borat's retarded brother Bilo can see that there's something wrong with that. Redman isn't Roger Clemens or anything, but he'd be a pretty good number 4 in this rotation. I'm so upset by our botching this situation. This is supposed to be management that has changed. When Redman wins 10-12 games and has an ERA around 5 and De La Rosa is looking at 150 walks and his ERA at 7, this will look even worse. He doesn't fit in our long-term plans, but he would make a pretty nice bridge to Future City, ya know? Moore better know what he's doing. This isn't the first time I've really questioned his intelligence. Remember the J.P. Howell deal last year? I still think we could've packaged him with more and got B.J. Upton.

maybe
he didnt want to come back to KC? Maybe he was willing to take less pay to play for a contender.

Greinke, Day, Wellemeyer
Are all better options than Redman.

by doublestix on Mar 10, 2007 12:57 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Those choices
I am with you on Greinke, but I can't say with any conviction that any of the following are likely to be more solid than Redman in 2007:

Zach Day
Todd Wellemeyer
Brian Bannister
Dewon Brazelton
Jorge De La Rosa
Brandon Duckworth
Wayne Franklin
Matt Wright

The Royals have a lot of options for the back end of the rotation and there is no guarantee that Redman would have cracked the starting five out of camp, but given the list above, my money would be on Redman to emerge as one of top two who would have jobs on April 1.  And even if he didn't make the inital five, if he was willing to pitch in Omaha for a bit I can't imagine he wouldn't be up with the team at some point in the first half of the season.

Redman would have made the team better, and for the price he settled for, he would have been a good addition to the team.  Oh well, time to move on.

by James Quinn on Mar 10, 2007 12:37 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

But He's Old
Kram Namder is much too old and set in his killin' ways to have an upside, unlike some of the guys you listed.

by NHZ on Mar 10, 2007 12:52 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

True, he's a bit long in the tooth,...
...but at 33 years old he is not so old that he can't still be effective when KC has it's next good team.  Redman might have another three or four years in him before he collapses.  I'm hopeful KC will be competitive as early as 2008.

Anyway, it's all academic now.  Redman has a new zip code.

Don't you think a 25th Century bounty hunter's name would rather be Namder Kram, rather than Kram Namder?  Kram sounds more like a NASCAR crew chief's first name.

Redman v Meche
Umm... Redman will totally out ERA Meche... think about the AL-NL difference, and the pitchers parks in the NL East

he might be a run better

FIRE BELL

by FireBell on Mar 10, 2007 1:58 AM EST   0 recs

mistake?
I would assume he really didn't want to come back to the Royals. At this price, this deal would have been good for any team in the mlb - it never hurts to have an extra replacement level starter. Anybody who needs evidence of this might look to Jose Lima's stint with the Mets, or Kyle Snyder's with the Red Sox. Even the best teams run out of starting pitchers sometimes.

It also sounds like Redman has a guaranteed spot in the rotation in Atlanta, which has to be his number one priority.

So, in short, I guess what I'm saying is that if you label this as a mistake by Dayton Moore, you have to label it a mistake by 29 GMs. I interpret this more as Redman's decision than as Moore's fault.

by Moose Tacos on Mar 10, 2007 10:49 AM EST   0 recs

I don't see this as a mistake
The guy had a 5.71 ERA last year, and while his peripheral rates indicate that he was unlucky...he was unluncky to the tune of "he should've had an area around 5." His stuff has been decline for a couple years now.

New MLB.TV speed
I'm looking forward to this also.  As it is, the quality is OK.  The only time when the broadcast looks bad is during fast action.

MLB really has their act together with things like MLB.TV.  If the NFL did something like this so I could watch all the Bengal games I'd be happy to shell out $50 or so.

Why "the hottie"?
Is the KC Gonzalez easier on the eye then his evil twin in Cincinnati?

I propose we call the Gonzalez in Cincinnati "Glovie Gonzo" due to his reputation as a good fielder/light hitter, and the KC Gonzalez as,... maybe "Smako Gonzo?"  The KC Gonzo is the one who used to hit a lot of homeruns isn't he?

Ryan and Denny
are really enjoying themselves today.  I love when somebody comes in the game who they've never heard of before.

Denny: "Bob Nobody's coming in the game, Ryan.  Tell the listeners all you know about him."

Ryan: "He's a good guy.  Was a great high school player."

Denny: "He used to be a water polo star.  But his school was too small to field a team, so he had to hang up the speedo and pick up the glove."

Hilarious

Gordon
When you go to MLB.TV you enter your zip code and they tell you if you are covered by the blackout rules.  If you are covered by the black out, then you can still watch the Royals on MLB, but you have to wait until the game is over and watch them in re-runs.  MLB normally posts the completed games in the archives a few hours after they have ended.

I live in the Royals black-out zone but I follow the Reds also.  Fortunitely I receive RSTN also so there are very few Royals games not broadcast on TV anyway.

don't know...
I've tried to check on mlb.com, but the info his hidden...I am gonna go month by month...pay for the first month of the season, find out what its like, and go from there...will still prolly keep it if they are blacked out...because I don't pay for cable and 20 a month is cheap because I can use it on the road at work and I use it nearly everyday...plus I love the idea watching six games at once...while fantasy players constantly get updated
