Game 20 Open Thread- White Sox (10-8) at Royals (6-13)

On a possibly rainy night, the Royals look to avoid being "swept" by the White Sox tonight at the K. If anything else, the prospect of Tee Shirt Tuesday should be exciting. Making the start tonight is the bounty of the Burgos trade, Brian Bannister. Sayeth Buddy:

"From all the reports we've gotten, Bannister's been throwing good," Kansas City manager Buddy Bell said. "We're putting Ducky in the bullpen just to give us a little more experience down there. We're really young in the bullpen, so it just made sense."

Yea, but Buddy, the young guys are the only one's worth a damn.

For more Buddy quotes, check out NYCRoyal's post.

The White Sox send Javy Vazquez (2-0, 2.50 ERA) arguably one of the most maddening pitchers of the decade.

According to BP's Playoff Odds Report, if you simulate the rest of the season one million times, the Royals storm back to take the division 4% of the time. We're in a pennant race boys! Huzzaaa!

I feel a 500 comment Game Thread coming on. Lets do this!

This is as good a time as any to note that there is no Spreadsheet Baseball this week because I've spent the last three or four days dying of sinus headaches. Damn pollen to hell.

In case the game is rained out and you want to watch former Royals.  Mark Redman is pitching for the Braves on TBS.

But there's no way to listen to a radio feed of the game live, besides paying MLB.com a bunch of money and probably getting blacked out for the privilege, is there? I'm in KC's radio area, but the radio I have here gets bad reception and you have to hear equal parts Denny and buzz.

by Garth on Apr 24, 2007 11:52 PM EDT reply actions

Peralta shouldn't ever pitch?
So we should never pitch Peralta, Standridge, Wellemeyer?

So, what only Soria and Riske should pitch?  There hasn't been a 2-man bullpen since the 60's.  I don't think that's going to work.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 24, 2007 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions

there is also jimmy gobble or brandon duckworth
either of whom would have been far more appropriate than peralta.

peralta has shown, consistantly, his inability to pitch so far this year. he would be better served mopping up games or pitching for omaha.

by Garth on Apr 25, 2007 12:19 AM EDT up reply actions

our bullpen sucks
its as simple as that. we cant pitch soria every inning, and EVERYONE else in our bullpen is at best inconsistent. remember on opening day how good jo-el was? we need more flashes of that for our bullpen to resemble anything like a major league one, and he pitched very good in the 5th. it is scapegoating to just blame the manager for throwing him out there for the 6th, just because peralta gives up two runs (after a bad call, mind you) doesnt mean that buddy cant handle a bullpen.

buddy isnt a horrible manager by any means, i dont think he'll ever manage a playoff team (including here in kc) and his quotes are painstakingly bad but the bullpen isnt his fault, its the talent's fault. give us a year, we'll have a mlb bullpen to begin next year i predict...

bell
Really? Really? You like Buddy Bell's move here?

Peralta | 9 games, 7.45 ERA before the game
Duckworth | 2 games, 1.59 ERA

Duckworth's a long reliever, it was the fifth inning.

Buddy has been using the pen quite a bit lately (including Peralta a million times), Duckworth hasn't been used in forever.

It's the easiest, gimme-est, duh-est play out there. But he doesn't make it.

Heck, I'd be okay with him putting ANYONE else in. Peralta keeps blowing close games. He has single-handedly lost the Royals 5 games -- impressive for a reliever after 20-some games.

by Garth on Apr 25, 2007 12:04 AM EDT up reply actions

i'm sure it's just my anger at this point
but i've often thought that any randomizing program on a cpu could do as well... if not, i'd be comfortable with ANYONE else having a pretty decent shot at being better than bell. it's not like moore would be just picking a name out of a hat. i'd like to see who he could come up with.

duckworth's in. interesting decision, buddy. just curious -- why pitch the long reliever when a middle reliever would be more appropriate, buddy?

Brown in left field? That's weird.
Apparently he's better than gload with the glove?

I just feel that when

And Brown in for Gload..why?
Damn I hope Emil makes me eat my words by hitting a tying/winning HR.

Then again...
If Shealy and Pena come up in the ninth and don't have Brown to pinch hit for one of them (assuming Sweeney hits for the other)..I'm going to be really pissed off.

Answering NYRoyals
Of course Peralta was a bad decision and I thinked(I mean thought) about that long and hard. He's been pitching a lot(and failing a lot) lately for us and single handedly lost a bunch of game for us. His ERA don't even begin to tell how bad he is this year for us. He let 5 out of 7 inherited runners score and Buddy (recently) keep using him in the middle of the inning thinking he can stop the bleeding, it makes no f'ing sense at all.
