Game 7 Open Thread- Royals (2-4) at Blue Jays (3-2)

The Royals look to snap a two-game losing streak tonight in Canada, as they take on the Blue Jays. In their home opener tonight, the bluebirds send the rich and famous A.J. Burnett (0-1, 27.00 ERA) to the mound. No word on how many gratis limo rides between Toronto and Maryland Burnett's wife has used this season, but she has 8 per year at her disposal, courtesy of the Jays. Its eight hours from Toronto to her home town of Bowie/Annapolis (internet is unclear), so, hopefully she left last night.

Eight hours in a limo. Fun. I think Keats has a poem about something like that. What a great idea. When your husband makes $11 million a season, every penny saved counts, and you just can't beat the grandeur of the open road. Think how stunningly beautiful that ride through Pennsylvania and New York must be!! I bet she knows the Tim Horton's menu by heart, and I'm sure no alcohol is involved in her trip, either.

The Royals counter with Odalis Perez (0-1, 6.75 ERA), who makes his 14th start as a Royal tonight. Wow. Its been special. With a win, he'll notch his third triumph as a Royal, passing an illustrious group that includes Jaime Cerda, Ryan Bukvich, Kyle Snyder, Miguel Batista and Denny Bautista.

Tonight's lineup:

1. DeJesus-CF
2. German-2B
3. Teahen-RF
4. Sweeney-DH
5. Gordon-3B
6. Brown-LF
7. Shealy-1B
8. Buck-C
9. Pena-SS

Does she hate flying?
An 8 hour limo ride... I mean, I understand why she wouldn't want some complimentary flights because airports suck, but I hope she's got a Gameboy or something.  She should've sprung for some private flights in the contract.

He's the Royals' man of mystery this year - could be a good pickup, yet I could also see him completely tanking and being out of the rotation by mid-May. Hopefully he puts together a solid start here.

This team blows opportunities like no other team. The bases load Buck-up double play. Yesterday's 3rd HR. This team is destined for another 100 loss season. They're flat out losers.

Bases loaded, ball hit into the corner, fan touches it.  So, the ump gives him a double and allows all baserunners to score.  There is no way the third guy would have scored.  Not even close.  He wouldn't have even tried.

Do you think he's bitter about being moved to RF?  Why would he be?  He's still batting third.  I don't think he minds the position change at all.

That's not what his dad said.
They were pretty miffed he had to move positions.

by balto on Apr 9, 2007 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Meh
They can be miffed all the way.  I'm sure it was temporary miffage.  Just moving from one position to another to make way for the best prospect in all of baseball.  Clearly, Teahen recognizes this from all I've heard from him.  And I doubt the Teahen family has written off Alex Gordon already.  They have to be smarter than that.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Why would he be?
When free agency rolls around, I think he'd make more money as a slugging third baseman.

I think you guys are trying to

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Not sure why you would
think you know what is in people's heads in the clubhouse.  Anyway, I doubt that clubhouse dissension, or the lack of it, has much to do with Alex Gordon being 1 for 20 with 9 strikeouts so far.

by tfn on Apr 9, 2007 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not the one who said Teahen is miffed
I don't think I said I know what is in anyone's head.  I wouldn't be surprised if Teahen initially didn't like getting moved.  But he knows Gordon is the top prospect in baseball.  And Teahen always sounds like a mature non-prima donna type.  So there is no good reason for anyone to think that Teahen is pissed because he's in RF and Gordon is off to a bad start in his rookie season.

Too early in the season
...to turn against the tea and say they stink.  Particulary since we've seen some very good, very important things from the Royals this year.

It is very easy to see a few losses, turn your back and say, "they suck".  But a baseball fan needs to have more patience than that.  This is a 6 month season and we have yet to play a full week.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 8:41 PM EDT reply actions

This is a bad night for this comment
but the starting pitching has been great so far this year.  With Dotel back, the bullpen should have some semblance of order.  We have to be patient, young players will make mistakes.

The perfect night for this comment
When some posters are saying that it's all turning to sh*t already.  Seems like the team isn't being given a chance to prove itself or get hot or even get out of the first week of baseball.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Not turning away yet.
But every season we go through the same thing. Some of us say, you can see the writing on the wall, others say it's too early to tell. But in the end the last couple seasons it's been the writing on the wall people that have been correct.

by balto on Apr 9, 2007 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

This isn't the same team
I don't know how many they're going to win, but the roster is significantly different from recent seasons.

And if your "the sky is falling" posts are about thinking that the Royals aren't going to the playoffs, my response is: didn't you know that going into the season?  And isn't success this season about progress?

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 8:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Who gives a crap if they were miffed...
Gotta do what's best for the team. WHen he's a free agent, if he wants to sign somewhere as a 3B that's his business.

Why call it "Fox Sports Midwest"?
It's really "Fox Sports Saint Louis" with some Royals baseball in select areas. It's a joke. We get absolutely 0 Royals or Chiefs coverage. The Midwest Sports Report at night is all about the Rams and Cardinals. We need an FSN KC.

Oy
We better hope our starters last the way they have been recently, because we REALLY don't have the bullpen depth to deal with a two-inning attempt by a starter.

I've seen it all in the field
For the Royals.  Although nothing beats the Matt Stairs relay throw pegging Grimace in the back.

I really want bases loaded here.
Because either we catch up at least partly, or we get to set a new record for futility as the team that got three men on three innnings in a row and didn't get one run out of it.

Young players can get better.  It happens from time to time.  I'm not saying Buck will ever be good.  I don't know.  But I like to give young players more of a chance to see if they can realize their potential.

I guess I've
been watching (and rooting) for these guys way too long.  A heart-wrenching loss, a big-time beat down, whatever...I just like to see the Royals play.  Occasionally, my loyalty is rewarded with some decent play (late last season).  Often it is rewarded with mediocrity (almost all the time)and regrettably; I am granted the pleasure of watching or listening to crap (yesterday and today).

Regardless, it turns out every year wind up playing 162 games and one or two or 39 bad ones don't really affect me like they used to.  Does that make me a Cubs fan?  No, I still expect improvement and excellence and demand accountability when they don't happen.  But, one or two losses = end of season...I know what you're feeling (and have experienced it for many years), but disagree.

Let's focus on taking a few more pitches to get this belly-itcher out of here and get some runs on their bullpen tonight.

Against two of the best teams in the AL
(and one game against Toronto).

Perspective, please.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Boston is 3-3 and Detroit is 3-3.
And this is after going 2-1 against us, each.
They're 1-2, 1-2 otherwise.

But I won't argue they are good teams and will prove as much down the line.

by balto on Apr 9, 2007 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Can you deny for a second
That they are two of the best teams in the AL?

What should our record be against them?  I think your expectations are unreasonable.

Balto, I'm sure you're not surprised
that some people don't like negativity which is unrelenting and shows little patience or perspective and is often unreasonable.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 9:22 PM EDT reply actions

Alright, I'll try to chill.
But you have to be feeling a little of what I and other are feeling. The same ole thing happening again. A team which feels like it's beginning a predictably downward spiral. It felt the same last year. And the year before. And the...
you get the picture.

Patience is great, but it also depends on what you're waiting on. Right now it feels like the waiting for the tooth fairy.

by balto on Apr 9, 2007 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions

This team is better than recent years
...but you have to give them a chance to show it.  You have to give them some time.

But you're just throwing up your hands and saying it is the same thing as very other year, 100 losses, here we come.  That makes no sense.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Add Braun
To the long list of Royals pitchers with an absolute lack of control.

by RoyalTex on Apr 9, 2007 9:23 PM EDT reply actions

Hey, look at it this way . . .
Even if we only improve by 10 wins this year, the Nationals will STILL beat that loss total by a ton - and they don't have any young talent at all, whereas we at least have a little. So, soon we won't be the default "Ha ha, their team sucks" puchline team. This may not help them win, but it will help me get through my day.

Well, a big loss was to be expected after the
gut churning loss last night. This is usually how it goes with the Royals. Every year as Royalsreview pointed out we have a soul killing loss or two. Generally they are followed by a blowout loss.

by balto on Apr 9, 2007 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

Balto, you should be waiting for 72 wins
Because that is what this team can do.  And I think they'll do it.  And that is a big improvement on the way to getting to contention in 2008 or 2009.

Throwing up your hands and saying same sh*t, different year is just not really looking thoughtfully at the team.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 9:29 PM EDT reply actions

72? Hmmm.
Maybe, but I don't know if I'd call that great progress. We still have a loser of a manager and some deadweight on the roster.
I think maybe 69 wins tops. We'll see.

by balto on Apr 9, 2007 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

10 more wins isn't great progress?
Since when?  For what team is that not great progress?  Must we go worst to first?  How common is a more than 10 win improvement?

You have to have reasonable expectations or you'll get screwed every year, regardless.

Every team has some deadweight.  Yes, we have some and much will be traded.

Toronto always plays hard
against us. This isn't the end of the world. Burnett's not as bad as people try to make him out to be. If he's healthy, he's usually pretty good.

Awful hitting followed by worse pitching. I can't believe I watched 5 innings of this crap. Plus the defense hasn't exactly been on tonight.  Will the Royals ever be good at any phase of the game?

...in case you haven't been following the Royals this year.

by Scott McKinney on Apr 9, 2007 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Do you consider "losing"
to be a phase of the game?

Because if you do, then they're great at that phase.
They're also great at the "leave runners in scoring position" and "ground into double plays" phases as well.
They're solid but not spectacular at the "base running errors" phase too.
